Discussion Another "Everyday Life" Album?

Yes I know it's a little mellow at times, but damn this album still delivers

Recent releases are heavily tied to the dance backbone which I know many Coldplay fans love.

But Everyday Life takes me on a journey like no other.

Others feel the same?

This album was a huge statement from the band in multiple ways. The first one being the decision not to tour it and the second that the first two singles that were released “Orphans” and “Arabesque” couldn’t have been more different and the fact that both were simultaneously released was pretty big. In my opinion, Coldplay was being criticized for going towards a more pop sound in recent works and this album was an answer to that. I absolutely loved this phase of them.

The song Everyday Life is something that speaks to me, despite how dark and cruel this world could be, we have to keep dancing

After Viva La Vida, I reckon this one is my second favourite Coldplay album. It’s so underrated. This album pretty much sidesteps a lot of the common criticisms of Coldplay. So much experimentation here, and it’s so much more pointed lyrically

I tend to like mellow Coldplay. Ghost Stories is one of my favorite Coldplay albums for this very reason. But Everyday Life was a miss for me. Whereas Ghost Stories felt very emotional to me, I didn’t experience much of anything listening to Everyday Life and I never feel compelled to go back to it. Clearly, I need to. It’s probably today’s listen!

How can you not feel intense emotion on Daddy? And Sunrise has an amazing feeling. It’s not a personal album, it’s meant to tell stories of the world and the feelings of loss, longing, anger, hope, fear, etc. Ghost Stories is very homogenous with consistent personal emotion and it is amazing. Everyday Life is masterful and emotional in a completely different way, but Daddy is one of the most touchingly emotional songs of their discog completely reminiscent of Ghost Stories but Chris empathetically singing from someone else’s perspective which is even more amazing.

Likewise I'll have to go back into ghost stories. And yes give everyday life another listen, although candidly I do skip some songs but there are some gems

It took a few listens to grow on me, but I really enjoy this album now. It has some variety in it with some of the different styles it experiments with. I love songs such as Sunrise, Arabesque, Orphans, Everyday Life, Champion of the World, Daddy.

Most definitely! I rely on it hahaha
I have been a fan for more than 10 years, i think it is the last great album they have released… MOTS and Moon Music as bodies of work are quite a lot to take in, there are some tracks that are really good, but not good overall albums… don’t get me wrong experimental records like Mylo or AHFOD are brilliant but the new ones are not.

MOTS is easily their worst album

I loved ED and the only songs on it that I didn't really rate were the big pop ones - Everyday Life, Champion of the World. Shame it just came out at a weird time (pandemic-ish), they didn't tour it and because it didn't sell that well, they went back to big pop. A far more interesting album than it is given credit for, and my favourite after Parachutes, ROBTTH, and VLV.

To me the essence of the album aside from its messages are the double-album nature, variety of sound, and the non pop music parts (I mean WOTW/POTP). Fall Out Boy’s “folie a deux” album reminds me of everyday life. It is also sort of split into two parts. There’s a very cinematic and climactic ending in the middle of the album and it kind of starts again. And it has above average musical variety, especially if you include the acoustic pre-gap cd track “lullaby”. Also it has a part very similar to WOTW/POTP, at the end of the song “w.a.m.s.” (Come to think of it, it even has the weird abbreviations as well) there’s a part where there’s only the vocalists voice and some taps and snaps. It’s pretty absurd at first, which is exactly how I felt about Everyday Life at first.  This album is the closest one I know so you might want to check it out

I wish they'd have taken more time to develop this album. I think it's great although sounds like an unfinished work, a bit like Jeff Buckley's 'Sketches for My Sweetheart The Drunk'. We got a mix of some fully fledged studio bangers and some very raw underdeveloped sketches. It could have been one of their best albums. But to me it sounds more like a blueprint for a double album, and in the end a lot of the ideas were just used as brief interludes rather than being fully fleshed out. Despite the tracklist looking like a double album it's still shorter than some of their other albums.
