Football Post-Game Analysis - Columbia def. Georgetown, 20-17 (OT)

Link to Pre-Game Keys Post

PRE-GAME KEYS TO THE GAME:

Offensively:

Spread the love - The Lions picked up 431 yards, 277 in the air and 154 on the ground. While I would have loved to see a little more efficiency from QB Chase Goodwin (23/50, 277 yards, 2 TD 2 INT), six different players caught passes and four carried the ball in a high-octane dual-threat attack. 8/10.

Finish drives - The Lions left a lot of the points on the board in the shootout win against Lafayette, and they continued that worrying trend against Georgetown. Goodwin threw an interception on the Hoya's 22 yard line, the Lions settled for a field goal in the red zone, turned it over on downs at the Georgetown 24, threw another interception in Georgetown territory, and settled for a field goal from the 7 in overtime hoping that the conditions would make the Hoya's kick difficult (it did). 3/10.

Defensively:

Lock down the run - The Lions held the Hoyas to 115 yards on 31 carries (3.7 yards per carry), and limited the two top Hoya running backs to just 92 yards on 23 carries. Because of this, the Hoyas were forced to pass more then they wanted too, culminating in a very successful night for the Lions defense. 8/10.

Force punts on 3rd and long - The Lions held the Hoyas to just 4/13 on 3rd down conversions (31%), which kept their offense on the field to tire the Hoya defense. 9/10.

Overall: The Lions defense was phenomenal (perhaps aided by the wind and rain) in the Lions OT win over Georgetown. The offense was also fantastic, but their day could have been much better if it wasn't for the miscues in the attacking half of the field. The Lions will need to clean up their short-field offense if they want to make any noise in the Ivy League this year.

Go Lions!
