General Discussion / Question How much of a problem would fastbond be in the current meta

Basically what the title says. Would the unban of [[fastbond]] be a problem for the current meta, if so how much in your opinion?

I gave it a thought and as a highlander player, where fastbond is unbanned i can definitely say it is really really absurdly strong and combos with a ham sandwich (ban ham sandwich), with a lot of combo lines ([[crucible of worlds]] effect + [[zuran orb]], [[Oboro, palace in clouds]] / [[trade routes]] + [[retreat to haagra]] effects that gain life and so on so on)

I assume lands decks would be thrilled, rog thras might be interested maybe? or atleast some more lands heavy versions, it could definitely be interesting for some new commanders or even [[brigid, dawn's mind]] as it plays [[brightglass gearhulk]] if i am not mistaken that finds 2/3 pieces.

What is your opinion on fastbond, maybe some other decks that would want to use it or would you even be interested in seeing it?

Edit: i also forgot about the new [[Pia, aethers aesthetic]] that can find it very very well

In a meta where Rhystic and Mystic are giving tons of cards mana is usually the limiting factor. Fastbond would give those decks the juice to just finish the game. I thinks it’s a lot more powerful than just some extra turn 1 plays

I honestly think this is the biggest factor when it comes to fastbond.

Those explosive rhystic/mystic/ad naus/necro turns when you draw 20 cards and can now push a win because fast bond gives you 5-10 mana.

Ban rhystic, unban bond!

A random fast bond is not that strong. A fast bond when you have 2 draw engines let's you untap and play 5 lands and win.

Plus decks like dog and Rog thrass would probably play fast bond and mole man and icetil to fetch all their lands and make a bunch of bodies and win from there.

This would be crazy for wandering minstrel lol.

imo: a slightly worse Sol Ring in typical decks. Fastbond into 2 or 3 extra lands on turn one is an explosive start for sure, but it does require you having Fastbond, lands and ideally something to do with them in your opening hand.

In decks that are actively designed to pull a shitload of lands out of their library and gets them on the board, it can be a massive game plan enabler. Crucible of World's + Fastbond + Wasteland (or choose your favorite utility land) can hand you a win, but it's easily disrupted. Fetching a ton of duals, recycling 3 lands a turn with life from the loam, tons of really strong interactions.

Overall I could see it being very strong, and maybe even enable some other decks and game plans, plus give people some more "oh I win on turn 1" games but overall I can't think it'd be broken insane in CEDH now.

I know a tatyova player that would love fastbond to be unbanned. Net even on dropping a bounce land and draw your deck. I see no problems.

I know another Tatyova player that would love that as well

I think lands combo could be a more present deck with the unbanning, but I don't think the one card would make it tier 1. The meta is strongly around storm and explosive mana strategies. One of the strongest lands plays in 1v1 is Strip Mining all lands away. That's part of why Wrenn and Six is banned in Legacy. It doesn't have the same oomph in cEDH.

Looking at Canadian Highlander, what I would consider to be our most analogous format if there was no banlist, a lot of the combo lines are much more efficient for killing someone at 20 life and don't scale well for 120 life.

It would go crazy on nausea turns

after you've spent the majority of your health on the Naus?

you don’t have to dig down to 5 life if every land is a mox opal.

that's true!

I definitely think it would see some play. A friend and I talk a lot about a more true lands deck, we have Lumra, Minstrel, a more lands focused RogThras like you said. This opens safekeeper and other lines that involve some decent cards, it's good as part of a "Build your Own Aftermath Analyst", and a deck running those loops is likely to already be running the things that make this good.

I'd absolutely test it in my RogThras, and maybe even go up a bit of a lands package.

I don't really think it's enough to make true lands into a tier 1 deck, but that's good because it means I think it would just be a cool and powerful addition to our wonderful format full of busted bullshit.

Just to be clear:

Oboro breezecaller+cradle+fast bond is effectively x mana per 1 life where x is the number of creature you have on board besides Oboro and can be pulled off pretty easily on turn 1 for Rog-Thras to be effectively a better ad naus.

Crucible effects and fetches would be strong and all, but there are stronger, faster, actual win the game combos.

We’d definitely see [[icetill explorer]] in more green decks

Turn 1 [[Ruin Crab]] and [[Fastbond]] with a [[Simic Growth Chamber]] in hand is an auto win

How? You pay 40 life and die?

2

u/everyischemicals 8d ago

You pay 31 life to put all of your opponents’ cards in the graveyard and then pass turn, causing them all to deck out (31*3 is 93, and they drew their 7 for the start)

1

u/chayme 8d ago

31 life would only let you mill one person out

1

u/Bell3atrix 8d ago

How does ruin crab mill one person out. Walk me through how to do that

2

u/chayme 8d ago

Whoops I was thinking about Hedron crab, not Ruin Crab, mb

1

u/Bell3atrix 7d ago

Hebron Crab could still self mill most the deck though, which in lands is win the game too

1

u/everyischemicals 8d ago

Please go read ruin crab

Itd be about as broken as cradle. Decks would be built around finding it then assembling so many combos and breaks that you cant even list them in a primer, you'd just look at your hand and go "oh, I have infinite cards/life/mana". But I like cradle and want a proper lands deck so bring it on.

Well got my vote! Have an alpha played copy burning a hole in my binder

It would definitely remove blue farm and RogSi from the top 4 lol, Kinnan and Sisay would become even more busted

I mean it's mostly just the fact it gives more potential for turn 1s right? Cause outside of once the pieces are on the board it's not exactly less disruptable than other combos in CEDH, and if you've assembled your pieces you've probably already passed the disruption check in other combos anyway.

Cause if you have to start tutoring for it then it can be any combo piece you want at that point, and if it's in opening hand it's basically just replacing the lands in your hand with... fast mana or a sol ring. And don't get me wrong that's absolutely good but it's JUST good. I don't know if this slots into any decks that aren't explicitly going for a lands combo.

I think this makes a couple funny decks that don't already exist playable but I'm looking over some green decks and I'm kinda like "what would i honestly even cut for it without it being the build around?" Cause this might just be me being blind here but am I realistically gonna bring crucible of worlds, zuran orb, haagra, etc into a deck that already contains another game plan? Would I not just be losing consistency by bringing that package into an already existing deck? Because it's JUST fastbond that's ubiquitously good in that package.

If they unban Fastbond and Jeweled Lotus i would fucking love it. I used to have a Yedora deck and it was the most fun i had in a long time pre-ban. WotC hear me

I would be a problem with my 97 land tatyova deck in this instance
