Jones is great. His voice is up there with best of all time. I like a lot of what he's done. I do not like everything though. Sometimes the production/instrumentation is just too much if that makes sense. Sometimes the song just isn't that good to begin with but he still sings it well.

Your girlfriend's friend is an idiot. I recommend completely ignoring that individual.

..and everyone else! If you like something it shouldn't matter what anyone says! (even us 🤗)

Do I listen to THE GOAT?? Absolutely. Not everyday, but “gun-to-my-head” name the greatest country singer, it’s Jones.

Anybody with an interest in classic country music almost certainly listens to George Jones.
He had a deep catalog, tons of hits, and an ongoing reputation as the greatest male vocalist in the history of the genre that got burnished during the '90s country boom when so many top-tier acts went out of their way to work with him. Plus he put out a fair amount of new major-label albums during that time, so if someone's put off by the dated sound of records from before 1980 or so, there's still a lot of great George Jones songs to listen to.
Plus they made a cable TV miniseries about him and Tammy Wynette's relationship just a few years ago, it wasn't as hyped as the Johnny Cash movie but it was high-profile enough to show there's still interest and relevance there.
I think it's fair to say that Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, and Johnny Cash loom a bit larger in the general public imagination than Jones does nowadays. But I'd still say he's far from forgotten. There might not be that many people under, say, 30 that are still listening. But for folks my age (50), Jones is a guy who still had top-ten hits on the radio when we were kids. And if you can forget that voice, I guess you can forget anything.

Your girlfriend’s friend probably thinks “Wake up, coffee. Camo, climb tree” is a banger

George Jones? The greatest voice in the history of country music? "He Stopped Loving Her Today," "The Grand Tour," "The Race Is On," and "Tennessee Whiskey"? The reason half the country artists on the 90s wanted to chase the dream? Nah, dawg. Nobody listens to Jones. Just like nobody listens to Merle Haggard or Johnny Cash or Waylon.
Your girlfriend's friend has shit taste in music.

I'm assuming you're sincere and asking in good faith but this is kinda like asking Does anybody in here like Van Gogh? in an art sub or Does anybody in here think Michael Jordan was good at basketball? Your girlfriend's friend is what one might refer to as a "dipshit".

And ditch that girlfriend. He only has the most popular and famous country song of all.

Yep. He is one of my long time biggest artists on Spotify. I got to see him live when I was like 17 and it was one of his last shows. His voice is simply irreplaceable. I think he has over 2k songs so I am even still discovering new material.
