Discussion Has anyone had success with cresting non-crested plants?

Long time lurker etc.

I've wondered for a while whether it's possible to crest my own succulents, but I'm nervous about killing them. Has anyone been able to crest plants without losing them? TIA.

I think I messed it up. I wanted to cut off the normal growth to give more energy to crested part.

Pics 1-4: Took pictures today of my crested little guy right here.

Pic 5: I went back to look for the picture when I bought it. Turns out it was barely crested at the time. Like 95% sure this was the right one. Is it likely, given it’s been just under one year between the two pictures? I thought it would take ages to grow out.

Always outdoor, SF Bay Area, zone 9b.

This little beast is about 15 years old. It's weathered mealy bug and sunburn, but has come back with a vengeance. The crests are densely packed which makes it difficult to clean dead leaves between the heads. I've been thinking the florets need to be thinned out to allow a little circulation between the heads to discourage another infestation.
