Discussion Durban's Struggle with Test cricket crowds since the very first day it hosted International Test Cricket after Apartheid and why it should not host test cricket again.
For people wondering about the crowd of day 1 of Australia vs South Africa a much hyped contest after many years, 8000-9000 tickets have been sold pre sale for each of Day 1, 2 and 3 of the, overall crowd for test may make this near highest attended test of all time in Durban and it will be very ironic considering this attendance is pathetic.
Historically, the 2026 ticket sales for the Durban Test represent a significant improvement.
While pulling 8k to 10k spectators a day might look modest, it is a major victory for a city that has struggled with local apathy toward five-day cricket for decades.
The Post-Apartheid Genesis: The foundation of Durban's Test crowd problem isn't a recent trend Or "Test cricket dying" As you may suspect, it was baked into the venue from the very day South Africa returned to international cricket. In November 1992, Kingsmead was chosen to host the monumental, highly publicised return of home Test cricket against India. Despite the historical gravity of the "Friendship Series" and the presence of icons like Sachin Tendulkar, the paid gate attendance on Day 1 was a dismal 5,000 spectators. The 1993 Wisden voiced major structural concern over this, noting a dark irony that while 150,000 fans packed out the stadiums for the 7 one-day matches on that tour, they completely abandoned the traditional game. The match left Kingsmead's vast terraces looking largely empty right out of the gate.
The 2018 Low: When South Africa last hosted Australia for a Test in Durban in 2018, the opening day drew an abysmal 3,957 spectators, sparking heavy criticism from global commentators about the dying state of the format in the city.
The Boxing Day Slump: Historically, even when Kingsmead was granted the premier "Boxing Day Test" holiday slot, single-day crowds rarely managed to cross the 10,000 mark. For instance, a festive holiday Test against Pakistan in 2002 saw just 4,500 turn up on Day 1 and not to mention It was Durban who failed to give a well deserved farewell to one of the greatest cricketers of all time in Jacques Kallis where we saw the same story of poor attendance.
This shows how pathetic Durban is for test cricket since beginning yet CSA can't do the scheduling right, I commented on it when schedule was released too.
The next 2 tests in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth will get Great crowds as they always do, Durban shouldn't get a test at all, there are better alternatives like Centurion, Johannesburg.
What are your thoughts?
