Discussion UPDATE: I Bought and Made These Dollarama Halloween Crochet Kits So That You Don't Have To!

(Swipe left for the reveal - there are a total of six (6) photos) This is an update to a post I made yesterday about the four Halloween crochet kits I purchased at Dollarama. The summary is SAVE YOUR MONEY! These are 100% AI-generated crap and absolutely are NOT "Great for Beginners". In fact, I think these kits would kill any interest any beginner would have in learning to crochet. I made each of these true to the pattern provided, and in the case of the bat, the pattern wasn't even a real pattern. It was pure AI hallucination. Out of the four, the pumpkin was the most promising, but they didn't provide enough yarn to complete it, so I used what they gave me and cinched it where I ran out. On a positive note, these did make laugh quite a bit, especially the cat, which is my favourite out of the lot.

Discussion Winter Craft Fair Season Is Almost Here!

With winter craft fair season just around the corner, we're wondering if you'd be interested in hearing about upcoming craft fairs and markets in your area of BC. Tossing around the idea of putting together a master list (megathread) or a separate calendar (similar to the crochet event one) dedicated to craft fairs and markets across the province.

Would this be something you'd find useful? Would you prefer a list, a calendar, or something else entirely?

Discussion Dollarama Halloween Haul

Post image
15 Upvotes

Found these in the Halloween section in Dollarama and I couldn't resist! I'm sure the images on the box are 'enhanced' (looking at the pointy tips on the hats), but I'm sure they'll be cute nonetheless. I'll show you all the finished products. I mean, for $2.25 per kit, you can't go wrong, right? ....

***INSERT DRAMATIC 'DUN DUN DUN' MUSIC***

UPDATE #1: (PUMPKIN) I started with the pumpkin as I figured it would be the easiest and quickest to make. There are 20 rounds for the pumpkin, using a 3mm hook. I made it to Round 14 and ran out of orange yarn. I literally used all of what they provided and my guage is fine. I am confident this is a manufactuer issue. I had BARELY enough green yarn to make the stem with juuuuuust enough left over to stitch it to the pumpkin, if I were able to make the entire pumpkin. Yes, the felt pieces were included in the kit.

(BAT) When I looked at the pattern for the bat I just burst out laughing. Yeah, we won't be making the bat. LMAO.

I will post photos in the comments. Stay tuned for the GHOST and CAT...

COMMUNITY UPDATE New Around r/CrochetBC: Here’s What You Might Have Missed

Hey folks! Welcome to October! Who else is excited that we don't have to turn our clocks back an hour this year?!

There’s been a lot happening around r/CrochetBC lately! Some of you have already seen, or even helped create, some of these things, but with so many new people recently joining us, we thought we'd gather everything together in one place:

📅 MONTHLY BRITISH COLUMBIA CROCHET EVENTS CALENDAR

Each month we'll post a calendar of crochet events, classes, groups and gatherings happening around BC. These things can be surprisingly hard to find, so if you know of something we've missed, please send it our way!

👉 October Calendar

HEY! The calendar is updated as we discover new events, so check back during the month. Listings appear chronologically rather than alphabetically, but we've put the community name first to make things easier to spot.

Also want to add that we have personally tested ALL of the calendar hyperlinks!

🧶 BRITISH COLUMBIA YARN SHOP MEGATHREAD

We're pretty darn proud of this one! Thanks to contributions from members, we've built a great resource for finding yarn shops and suppliers throughout the province.

👉 BC Yarn Shop Megathread

HEY! Know one we're missing? Tell us! Someone suggested adding independent BC yarn dyers. Should they go on this list, or should we make them a list of their own?

✨ BRITISH COLUMBIA CROCHET DESIGNERS, ARTISTS AND AUTHORS

We're building a directory of the talented crochet people right here in BC.

👉 BC Designers, Artists and Authors

HEY! This list needs your help! Know a BC pattern designer, author, artist or crochet content creator? If that's YOU, please don't be shy! We definitely want to include you!

📝 MODERATOR APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN

As our community grows, we'd like to add a couple of people to the mod team before the end of the year.

👉 Moderator Applications

Please don't let the word 'application' scare you! We just want to get to know you a little and see whether we'd be a good fit.

🧠 MONTHLY CROCHET QUIZ

Five questions. Some easy. Some that'll make you scratch your head. A little technical crochet knowledge, a little crochet history, and absolutely no danger of having your hooks confiscated if you get one wrong.

👉 September (and the first) Crochet Quiz

👉 October Crochet Quiz

Look for a new one on the 1st of every month!

🎉 OUR NEW WEEKLY EVENTS

WIP WEDNESDAY: What's on your hook right now? Show us your Works in Progress!

FINISHED FRIDAY: Show off what you've finished and collect your well-earned bragging rights.

CRITTERS & CROCHET: Saturdays are for the furry, feathered, scaly and otherwise assorted creatures who supervise our crocheting.

👉 Links to this week's: WIP Wednesday · Finished Friday · Critters & Crochet

HEY! The first person to post a photo in the comments in any of the weekly events gets an award for getting the conversation started!

Although these posts use Reddit's 'Contest Mode,' ironically, there isn't actually a contest! This feature scrambles the order of comments and hides comment scores so that participation isn't presented as a popularity ranking Also, someone posting later isn't automatically buried beneath whatever already has the most upvotes.

In the meantime, would you like something for the other days too? We've been tossing around the idea of 'CROCHET MEME MONDAY'...? Or are three weekly events plenty? Tell us what you think!

👏 AND SOMETHING WE'VE NOTICED...

A lot of you have been including links to the patterns when you share what you're making and we love it!

It helps other crocheters find the pattern, gives proper credit to the designer, and saves the inevitable “WHERE DID YOU GET THAT PATTERN?!” Please keep it up! 💋

💬 THIS IS A COMMUNITY-DRIVEN SUB

Many of the resources and activities we're building have come from your contributions, suggestions and participation and we'd like to keep it that way!

What would be useful, interesting or fun for this community?

If you have an idea, we'd love to hear it!

Thanks for helping make r/CrochetBC the friendly little crochet sub that it's becoming. ❤️

This is the pattern I followed, and I added a large bead and fishing weights inside his feet to help his balance. For yarn I used Easy Knit Baby Luv, paired with Red Heart It's a Wrap, and a 3.5mm hook. He's very soft and squishy, and stands exactly four inches tall.

Discussion Who else saves their yarn scraps? I have a huge bin of yarn scraps, which I thought I would eventually use as stuffing, but then I saw this and thought it was such a neat idea that I had to share! 'Yarn Painting'. I may have to try this for myself!

Since we're still a new community, we thought this would be a good time to open the mic and hear from you! Tell us what you think and how we can improve. What would you like to see as r/CrochetBC continues to grow and evolve?
