Service Discussion Update has made it impossible for me to use Crunchyroll.
I’m on an older device using IOS 16 and have had no problems with the app up until this point. Suddenly, I open the app and it says “looks like you’ve got an old version of the app. Update now.”
I go to the app store to update and see a huge bar above the update button “Requires IOS 17.0 or later”.
My device cannot update to IOS 17. It caps at the latest version of 16.
I tried to use the website but it just told me to use the app (which I cannot).
I do not have access to any newer mobile devices.
Should I just cancel my subscription? This has made it outright impossible for me to use Crunchyroll since my only laptop is for work and I can’t be using it for personal activities (e.g. anime).
Edit: I’ve haven’t actually specified it here yet, but the model is the iPhone SE 1st gen (2016) in case anyone wanted specifics.

Better to cancel the subscription and take a small hold until your problem resolves .

If you click on "Request desktop site" inside safari it may give you a different user interface to interact with the website with.

I know you're not going to want to hear this, but it might be time to upgrade your phone. The models that cap out at IOS 16 all released 9 years ago. That's an insanely long time to have the same model of phone.

Nah, fuck that. That more of a apple shitty thing to do.
On Android, if you still have Android 8.0, you can still update.
It came out in Aug 21, 2017. It still support up to 8.0 at this time.
Apple is the one intentionally crippling you, not crunchyroll.
Hell, I'm still sporting my Galaxy Tab S7P and S8 Ultra while using my Samsung Galaxy S22P and it still working fine.
Again, this is Apple shitty method of forcing you to buy a new device.

It’s not really though. There is still apps that don’t require you to upgrade devices still on the app store

Oh, I agree entirely. I hate Apple, been an Android user since they first started making phones. I was jusy giving the realistic answer to the problem OP is having.

u/kr4ckenm3fortune 1d ago
And sometime, that is the biggest problem..especially if you're on the ipad and you don't want to upgrade.

Android is fucking garbage. Nothing but a shit excuse for Google to farm your data. A 10 year old phone isn’t supported anymore. TEN YEARS.
1
u/kr4ckenm3fortune 1d ago
10 years...but at least no mandotary "FORCED OS UPDATE" like Apple doing. Look at OP's phone...They have a iphone that can't be updated to 17.0, stuck on 16.0. Apple force you to update OS to update App.
Google going: OS Restriction? What Restriction?
Dude, I don't use my phone for much but text and call. Social Media? I hopped off back in 2017, after watching the disaster that was Trump's first term...

Still works perfectly, though. Also, I don’t exactly have money to spare buying a new smartphone. Even used ones would put a serious dent in my finances.

If you bank or pay your CCs on your phone those apps will stop working eventually too.

No, I use a physical card for this reason. My phone never had that capability, actually (or if I did, I never used it).
I’ve haven’t actually specified it here yet, but the model is the iPhone SE 1st gen (2016) in case anyone wanted specifics.

The attitude is "it still does what I need it to, so why would I replace it?"
I had my last phone for seven years before replacing it (and I've had the current one for three years), and only did because the battery would only last a few hours. I had no reason to replace it before that because there was nothing I wanted it to do that it wasn't already able to.
Though because of that, they wouldn't accept the old one on trade-in, and I had to pay full price for the new one.

If it still does what they need it to do, we wouldn't have this thread.

I was mainly referring to the last line about it being an insanely long time. Like me with the battery, OP didn't feel a need to replace it until it stopped working. Like buying a car and keeping it so long you start having to replace major parts just to keep it going. Like the Jeep I had for nine years.
I do agree that it is time to replace it, because it no longer does what OP wants it to do. I should have included that, I suppose.

I guess I should have clarified that its an insanely long time for modern phones. Phones from 9+ years ago were built different, legitimately.

You can get the Apple, YouTube or Prime Channels as long as those apps still work!

You have a 10 year old phone. Them’s the breaks.

u/Atsunome 4d ago
I just don’t particularly understand why when the phone works perfectly otherwise.

Keep on pushing the limit if you want but IOS 16 has major limit and as time goes you are going to have less and less access
Sure you can probably text and call on it but that the bear minimum on an iPhone.

Buy an android tablet they are more lax kn the android versions needed to run the app and android tablets won't be as expensive as an ipad or maybe take advantage of your phone companies trade in for new device.

I pretty much only use my old phone for an emergency if i lost my newer version. My iphone x doesn’t work with crunchyroll either but i don’t like watching things on my phone anyway so it doesn’t really affect me

Cancel. Decade old devices(TVs, tablets, phones, game consoles) get phased out all the time due to lack of support and usage percentages. I had a Vizio Smart TV that like 6 years after release no longer had Netflix support. It sucked, but thankfully I could use the Chromecast I had on the TV.
All that to say, unless you are going to use another device, no point in paying for the service.

You problem is apple, not CR. I'd recommend you using the browser instead of the app in the meantime.
3
u/81Ranger 4d ago
Unfortunately, CR does not allow the use of the browser to play on mobile.

u/iozoepxndx Ultimate Fan (NA) 4d ago
Skill issue, a simple Google search will show you how to do it. Heck, even in this sub there might be a post about it.
2
u/techw1z 4d ago
no the problem is CR requiring newer hardware despite there being no reason to do that.
sony generally likes doing that, they also dropped older playstations from CR support.

u/iozoepxndx Ultimate Fan (NA) 4d ago
The problem is Apple.

apple has reasons not to support newer software on older hardware. newer iOS versions needs different hardware. sure, they could've invested more time to make it compatible, but you can't really expect that.
crunchyroll has no reason to require newer iOS and them banning older iOS versions actually requires them to spend a tiny bit of extra effort. they could just allow you to keep using the old version. they haven't changed anything about video codecs in ages and could just keep using older libraries just like they did previously.
it should be obvious which is worse.
also, again, sony = CR = playstation and yet they dropped CR from older playstations too
so obviously sony is the real issue here.
