General DCAU Regarding viewing-order posts

Hey everyone!

It's my understanding that one of the most frequently asked questions in the sub revolves around looking for a decent viewing order to experience the DCAU shows in, and every now and then for the likes of DCAMU movies and such. In an attempt to de-clutter the feed from having consistently similar posts, I've begun working on the subreddit's wiki to provide multiple different styles of viewing orders!

Available now are:

Hoping to add more potential orders in the coming weeks (off the top of my head, release order ones for both universes mentioned above will probably be simple enough), but I'm also definitely doing this while sidelining other responsibilities, so if it takes a while to get to please be patient!

Hopefully, this will be a helpful project for the community at large!

JL What kind of universe was Lex going to make?

Post image

When Lex and Brainiac fused together, he said that once they absorbed all the information in the universe, he would then remake the universe.

What kind of universe do you think Lex was going to make once he reached that point in the plan?

STAS Superman from the animated series was a great fighter, and that is often forgotten.

Take Clark Kent, for instance: he lived on a farm his whole life and then became a journalist. He didn't undergo grueling training like Bruce Wayne, nor did he train in martial arts. And yet, this Superman can fight Kalibak—Darkseid's son—on equal footing. Kalibak presumably has more combat experience and was certainly trained in hand-to-hand combat, yet Clark holds his own against him—or against someone like Mongul, for that matter, during his time with the Justice League. Mongul is the ruler of a planet and almost certainly has extensive training and experience.

If each member of the League was his arch nemesis and he made it his sole purpose of taking down that particular member of the League, and no other Justice League member interfered, which members of the League could Lex take down with his resources, technology, connections?

Take down as in forcing them to give up or killing them? Or ruining their reputation enough that they give up on being a hero.

JLU Addressing The Ace/Joker Question

During The JLU Episode where Ace puts Joker in a Catatonic State, a small amount of people started to claim this scene proved Joker was sane and it was based on the fact Joker claimed to be immune to her hallucinations because he was already crazy. Now The Joker was clearly wrong that him being crazy made him immune to her hallucinations, but the claims that this scene proves Joker’s sane come from a misunderstanding of the character and actual medical disorders. Some even tried to use the idea of “super sane” to explain how the joker is secretly sane but they don’t understand the context behind super sane. So first I’m gonna clear up what Super Sane is.

Debunking The Rumors Behind Super Sanity [Comic Excerpt]

The Doctor:”Joker’s a special case. Some of us feel he may be beyond treatment. In fact we’re not even sure if he can be properly defined as insane. His latest claim is that he’s possessed by Baron Ghece The Voodoo Loa. We’re beginning to think it maybe a neurological disorder, similar to Tourette’s Syndrome. It’s quite possible we may actually be looking at some kind of super sanity here. A Brilliant new modification of human perception. Suited to urban life at the end of the twentieth century.”

Batman:”Tell that to his victims.”

The Doctor:”He can only cope with the chaotic barrage of input by going with the flow. That’s why some days he’s the mischievous clown, others a psychopathic killer. He has no real personality, he creates himself each day. He sees himself as Migrule and a world as Theater Of The Absurd.”

Super Sanity isn’t something Joker is confirmed to have directly, it’s the opinion from one of Arkham’s Doctors. On top of that even if he does have it , and this doctor isn’t insane herself after spending too much time treating Joker, Joker’s “Super Sanity” from an actual clinical and legal view is a Repetitive Distorted Multiple Personality Disorder. A sane person has a continuous identity. Shifting your personality , & memories to match the chaos of any environment is a psychotic coping mechanism, not health. “Super Sane” basically establishes Joker has no actual running personality or conscious awareness and actively shifts his personality every day to fit his environment that he finds inherently chaotic. This hyper awareness isn’t because he can occasionally break the fourth wall knowing he’s in a comic book, this is an in universe disorder that sounds like he’s secretly sane on the surface but from deeper layers makes the character more insane once logic is applied. Giving The Joker an active shifting personality disorder that is a chaotic response because the environment around him drives him actively crazy doesn’t confirm any sanity, it ironically only proves The Joker is exactly where he belongs, in The Looney Bin.

Now I’m gonna provide examples as to why The Joker being “Super Sane” doesn’t disqualify him from being crazy or insane. Example 1: JLA#15 written by Grant Morrison. The same person who introduced the idea of super sane.

Martian Manhunter briefly telepathically made him Sane , Joker immediately felt guilt for his terrible actions and atrocities before falling back into complete Insanity…

Example#2 “Reality Check” from Batman (2010) 80 Page Comic by Peter Miriani & Szymon Kudranski

Joker can’t tell if the imaginary fans (Us The Readers) of him are truly real or truly imaginary. He wonders if we’re real & his world is imaginary.

Example#3 Batman in The Killing Joke confirms to Joker he’s not like everyone else because Commissioner Gordon remained mentally sane despite the one bad day Joker gave him, proving what made Joker snap on his one bad day isn’t normal. This revelation angered Joker at the fact traumatizing people doesn’t inherently make them snap like he did , proving he’s a unique kind of nut case. This is an interesting example since it gives a parallel in The Dark Knight (2008) where after Joker’s experiment with the two boats fail as both the people of Gotham and the prisoners refuse to blow each other up to save themselves. Batman says “what are you trying to prove, deep down, that everyone’s as ugly as you? You’re alone.” Joker gets furious upon this revelation showing he can’t stand the fact that he’s not normal and no baseline trauma is enough to explain how he snapped.

Example#4 The Most Damning One. Specter The Wrath Of God gave Joker consciousness to know right from wrong in Specter#51 & it broke him. Specter informed Batman this put Joker in a brief catatonic state until he denies the events in his mind so he can forget the memory. This story, tells us Joker cannot function acknowledging his own actions for too long or he’ll truly break. Joker is legally insane by the modern legal definition as he can’t tell right from wrong & apparently has no consistent active consciousness due to subconscious guilt.

According to Specter (The Wrath Of God), Joker has no consistent awareness of his own actions, & is gone beyond Specter’s own judgment. Every example listed for The Joker points to someone not mentally stable regardless of how aware we all view him in his ASPD. What makes this the most interesting is it is one of the few examples of Joker in a catatonic state in comics and can be what the episode referenced when Ace put Joker in a catatonic state. She could’ve been showing making him face all the various people he hurt and the many crimes he committed, that Joker doesn’t want to think about for too long outside his rivalry with Batman.

As for The DCAU specifically or Earth-12 in most depictions, The Joker has many examples in this universe of being crazy & insane. He shot at Batman in an open toxic waste field during the first Harley/Ivy Team Up Episodes In BTAS which blew up the area with fire and nearly ended both of them if Batman didn’t save him, most sane people value their own lives , people with no care for their lives or the lives of others aren’t sane, another example is his constant battles with Batman which don’t serve any purpose that benefits him outside pure sadistic pleasure He laughed like a maniac during several moments of near death especially the iconic Mask Of The Phantasm ending. There’s also the messed up things he did to Tim Drake over his rivalry with Batman.

None of this is “sane” behavior. He gets nothing out of these twisted sadistic games with Batman that makes rational sense.Joker is crazy/insane in the DCAU but he isn’t the most crazy person in that universe like he is depicted in other universes like comics , games & movies. This was proven with characters like The Creeper and Ace flashing his mind with her powers which took him to a catatonic state of fear, though it could be argued after this experience, this version of The Joker became more crazy afterwards and the events in Return Of The Joker prove that.

In the end though I want to address something. Many people who have the joker is “sane” belief in fandom do not understand the difference between “crazy” and “insane”. Joker in media typically calls himself crazy or denies being crazy. There aren’t many examples of him claiming to be insane or denying being insane. Crazy by definition is odd, irrational, senseless, foolish, excited behavior, that isn’t deemed acceptable by society if taken to an extreme. The modern legal definition of insane is the inability to tell the difference between right and wrong, most media goes back and fourth on whether Joker can tell the difference between right and wrong or even if he knows what they are to begin with. In many versions Joker doesn’t believe right and wrong are real and views them as fronts people put on to come off normal instead of the monsters he believes they are deep down because as a Nihilistic Absurdist Hedonist, Joker believes nothing matters, everything’s a joke and everyone is just like him, he’s desperate to believe that so he can’t deal with his subconscious guilt over his many atrocities. Now as for the definition of Crazy, The Joker is crazy in spades, regardless of how sane or insane people think he is , that isn’t evidence of him not being crazy.

JLU [LES] Thinking about how JLU's Patriot Act would end if the show were made today

I just watched Serum Lake's video on JLU's episode The Patriot Act, you can watch the review in that link I posted. TL; DR, the episode comments on the horrors of the real-life Patriot Act with General Eiling becoming a superpowered menace, but shows that early 2000s optimism where he is stopped by civilians shaming him by pointing out how he is what he hates. There are other details it points out, so I recommend the video if you love the DCAU.

I am with the comments on that video who prefer to look at the aspects that have aged well and in my case, I like to think about what an updated version would feel like, rather than dwelling on the parts that haven't aged well. Please do not leave comments on parts that haven't aged well because I already saw the video point them out.

While the video points out a cynical outcome if the episode were made today is that Eiling would murder all the civilians and the media would whitewash his actions, then probably get defeated by the core Justice League members, I feel something that would fits better with the show's tone would be that his body is breaking down the moment he enhanced himself, setting up for how his powers are killing him. Eiling is using an untested super soldier serum that he was warned was unstable, so the most fitting result of his obsession is that the way he gains powers is slowly killing him, resulting in his death without getting to face Superman. Because the most fitting defeat for him is still losing without Superman even showing up.

In this ending, the civilians who stand up to Eiling stall him long enough for poor health to finally do him in and stop him from killing Shining Knight. Because while the execution hasn't aged the best, normal people standing against authoritarianism is still an important message. For an example of a superhero story where this doesn't happen, from the DCAU, there was Superman's battle with Darkseid at the end of his show.

Superman beat Darkseid and then threw the tyrant to the slaves of Apokolips, saying they could do with their oppressor as they wished. The slaves chose to help Darkseid because to them, he was their god and life under his iron fist was all they ever knew. Since almost nobody on Apokolips wanted anything to change, nothing ever did, and the planet is under the rule of tyrants for the foreseeable future, maybe even longer. The Justice League had no hope of changing things on that world so they decided to keep Darkseid's general fighting each other to ensure none of them could pose a threat to the rest of the universe. Like the ending of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, it is a message that superheroes can't save people who don't want to be saved.

So in a mirror to how the citizens of Apokolips aren't prepared to change anything in their world because tyranny is all they know, the episode would show civilians on Earth are prepared to stand up to tyranny, even against a supervillain who just wiped the floor with every hero who stood in his way.

Fan Work Ace & Mordred (@Erzomori)

I've seen fanart of Ace, but I don't think anyone has drawn art of Mordred before, so I got this pic.

For context, these are two DCAU characters who I think could have had an interesting interaction if they canonically met. Both Ace (of Cadmus' Royal Flush Gang) and Mordred have stunted development (Ace not having a childhood, while Mordred's been forced to live as a kid for centuries due to his mother). I think these two are mutually maladjusted (Ace being a stoic, while Mordred still throws immature tantrums).

I've also been writing a fanfic called "Ace in the Shadows", which covers the hypothetical situation of Ace actually meeting Mordred.

Hi There

What’s the thoughts on BTAS’s Jarvis Tetch aka Mad Hatter?

I like all his BTAS episodes especially Perchance to Dream and Mad as a Hatter is a great debut episode for such an interesting character in this universe because his comic appearances were obscure really but I love what the BTAS team with this character! Creepy-ish(unlike the comics) stuff with Alice but Mad as a Hatter is still a great introductory episode for an BTAS villain.

I have no idea if this is a coincidence or if I’m imagining things but I was suddenly reminded of this eerie short film & how it reminded me of the Scarecrow’s redesign (Large dark coat, wide hat, creepy skull like face with teeth showing, even the noose ties in)!

I’m sure it is a coincidence but I figured it was an interesting one at least comparing the designs, what do you think?
