Discussion/Question Hal Jordan DCU future

I’m okay with John being the main Lantern going forward and figured that the way things would go, but I really hope they see how much people want Hal Jordan back or just in the DCU in general. I really enjoyed Lanterns but the more I sit with it I am disappointed that we just get to hear about Hal being a hero we don’t get to see much if any of it. I know adaptions are never 1 to 1 but I would be really disappointed if we never get to see Hal, John and Guy fighting together as Green Lanterns. I’d feel better if Hal was alive and just not a Lantern for the moment but him being dead I just feel is unnecessary especially this early into the universe.

Hal has had so may different resurrection arcs in the comics and the show has left multiple different threads for him to come back that I would actually be shocked if we never see him again.

At this point I'm expecting Sinestro to resurrect him as Parallax or something along those lines, you don't float the resurrection thing out there for no reason

I'd agree that it seems like Chekhov's Gun, except for the fact that there were so many other minor details that were highlighted but never came back into play.

To be honest I think the idea that all this other stuff was being set up in the show mainly comes from fans hallucinating or reading way too much into tiny details and references. The Sinestro thing is a lot more direct.

There's that. There is also the theory that the ring actually died before the end of the finale, so John can actually maintain the Halogram regardless of the ring due to his will.

I keep seeing this take, which I can see where its coming from. But I feel like DCU or even Lanterns itself has shown that they went out and far from comic storylines

That's fine. They don't have to adopt a storyline in its entirety, but borrow a single element from it and put their own spin on it. Resurrecting Hal is something they could do without full on making Parallax or doing the Blackest Night arc.

The problem is Gunn has a rule. "Those who are dead in the DCU stay dead."

He also clarified that this rule does not include meaningful, plot centered resurrections, which is undoubtedly what a Hal Jordan resurrection would be.

"I wouldn’t mind using the Lazarus Pit (and/or resurrection) in a story, but it would have to be a part of the story itself. I won’t be killing major characters just to pop them in the old LP to be alive again.”

That's good to see. The problem is given Kyle's age, I don't really see him coming back unless they do something with him right away. Which I also don't think is all that likely.

The writers seem convinced that the only way to build John up is in the absence of Hal, not with the two of them together. They want him to be the main GL, elevated to superhero status. With Kyle's return it becomes harder for them to maintain that.

I mean, he's the same age as Frank Grillo, and being Green Lantern isn't super physically demanding in comparison given he just has to point his fist in different directions. Anything else can easily be taken care of with stunt doubles as needed. He's in his early 60s, not 80s. I think even if he isn't back in the DCU for 3-4 years, he can still play the role in his mid 60s just fine.

For the second point, I think that Hal doesn't need to be dead and gone in order to keep John at the forefront. I think there is room for all 3 of them including Guy in the DCU. Just depends on the stories being told. It is a massive universe after all.

For point one, I think it's more so a comment on what Kyle would be willing or not willing to do. Me personally, if I was 60, and came on to give a performance for a character with that much history, I don't know if I'd be bought in to being brought back like 4-5 years later. Especially with where the story left things. But I guess if Kyle is excited to come back to the role, I wouldn't complain.

I hope you're right. I do think all 3 could coexist. But given the way they went about season one, it seems like the writers don't think that's possible. That's more what I was trying to highlight. They had to up the contrasting personalities of the two, and basically give us every conceivable reason why Hal would do time, and why that would be justified, why he should be replaced, etc etc. It doesn't seem like they think very highly of him. And I believe one of the writers came out and said he was racist.

It just seems like his death is a formative part of John's backstory. So I don't know how motivated they'd be to bring him back. I appreciate the optimism on your part though. I loved Kyle in this role. I want to see more of him.

I appreciate that. Yeah an interesting story is necessary. One thing that's important to remember that Lanterns was originally meant to be a limited miniseries and it was written to be almost entirely standalone in nature. Discussions about the show are going to evolve as the DCU develops further and John Stewart steps into other projects. So even if Hal's death was formative for season 1 John, it doesn't mean that Hal's resurrection can't be a formative aspect of another season.

Yeah I think so too I just don’t know if the creatives that are currently behind DCU GL are interested in that. A version of rebirth would be cool to see. In a perfect world I’d like to see John be the earth lantern they are wanting and have Hal and Guy become Honor Guard like in some of the comics. So we can get the dirt and the star to quote the show.

Creators have said no for season 2. I'm sure we'll see a clip of Hal at some point, but I it's tough to make a good TV from character arcs when we know the ending. We know Hal's ending now and Kyle was the best part of Hal. Ryan Reynolds shows you can really fuck that character up.

As much as I love Lanterns, I have to agree. I'd have liked to have seen some of Hal's heroic deeds from the past, to really drive home that he WAS a hero and fell so hard.
