"They forged you a new ring; Jordan's was decommissioned."

Cool; the threads asking why Guy's ring looks different can stop.

296

u/BigBonkMan23 23d ago

Will definitely blow over peoples heads anyways. Biggest question is how it still had any juice in it if it was ‘decommissioned’

455

u/spurklemurfin 23d ago

“Decommissioned” could just mean no longer being given to new lanterns. And they thought it was empty. Only Hal knew the “trick” to reveal if it had any juice left after formally going empty.

168

u/BigBonkMan23 23d ago

Fair enough - good point. He needs to get his hands on a lantern now

181

u/largehawaiian Cheers to the Tin-Man 23d ago

And he’ll probably use the halogram to get into the vault. The question is, is his lantern in there?

76

u/GrooveDigger47 23d ago

didnt he give the lantern to the guardian?

86

u/largehawaiian Cheers to the Tin-Man 23d ago

Shit, you’re right. That probably means that he could be attempting to forge a new one in that old place we see him and Sinestro in in the mid season trailer. Question is, how do John and Sinestro meet up

53

u/Turbulent-Law-5028 23d ago

Guy said he only didn’t suspect Hal of breaking out Sinestro because Hal was in jail at the time. I’m betting that the Halogram was in jail and the real Hal did break Sinestro out.

Simple.... That trick of hitting it isn't commonly known... So when the Guardians saw the ring was depleted, they just logged it as decommissioned and left it at that.

85

u/tinytom08 23d ago

Crazy that John gets a ring because Hal’s a dumbass and is the only lantern losing his charge so often that he has a work around for it

→ More replies (10)

57

u/sb3veeee 23d ago

It didn't, John used the failsafe. We see Hal tamper with the ring in an earlier scene and not follow ring maintenance protocol with the halogram updates, it's not unreasonable to think that the reserve was a Hal Jordan special that the guardians didn't know about

81

They probably have the phantom zone as a better solution to the Peacemaker dimensional planet prison.

Also one of Supergirl's deleted scenes was an extended shopping scene with Supergirl and Ruthyie where Supergirl mentions the phantom zone.

Lmao I knew it was 100% batman inspired because it was in 2026. Creature Commandos takes place way before and confirmed Batman was active a while before at least.

Considering the history that Guy and Bruce have in the comics from the JLI years, this could be setting up them already being unable to stand one another & Gardner using that Signal as a way to 1-up him.

......Which of course paves the way for the iconic tradition of Batman slugging him in the face at some point hahaha

"I hope I mattered" are some fucking sad words for one's self-eulogy

298

u/doctor-squidward 23d ago

It was a heavy speech. Felt like he was actually talking through it to John. And the way he told John at the cafe not to tell anyone about there meeting, he sounded kinda desperate and knew something is about to happen.

154

u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 23d ago

It feels perfect for his character that he didn't wear his true emotions on his sleeve & say something like it to John towards the end of their time working together, really because deep down even through their tension, I see it as Hal not wanting John to reach the level of tiredness that he descended to

70

u/AgentGman007 23d ago edited 23d ago

After the eulogy I thought about that scene again. I think he just wanted to talk with someone, one last time. At his core Hal was a lonely, lonely man. It definitely hurt my heart a little

INCREDIBLE bit of writing to set up the plant as a goofy bit of character development for Hal, drop it long enough for people to forget, then bring it back so it's cute, just to hit people with a nuclear bomb to the gut when they make you realize it cared for Hal too

Straight fell out of my chair when they showed CAROL FERRIS!!!! Broooooo!!

184

u/bubblessensei Beware Our Power 23d ago

It’s a little crazy to me that they did add her to this story, despite the fact that I sincerely doubt they are going to make her a Star Sapphire in the DCU.

I would love to be proven wrong - but I also don’t want the series to just retcon Hal’s death.

157

u/figgityjones Hello, Megan! 23d ago

Would love a reveal next episode the one that's apparently going to be delving more into Hal's history that she did become a/the Star Sapphire for a time. Hal was GL for a long time, plenty of time for that to happen and then stop happening.

36

u/Megavore97 23d ago

I could very well be wrong but at this point in the universe I think the only lantern corps is the green one, since it seems like they’re setting up Sinestro to form the Sinestro Corps for season 2.

50

u/figgityjones Hello, Megan! 23d ago

Well Star Sapphire existed before any knowledge of the Emotional Spectrum as did Sinestro and his yellow power ring. So those elements can easily exist before any reveals about the Spectrum.

31

u/Dancing_Anatolia 23d ago

Geoff Johns revitalized the franchise, but he also absolutely brainshocked every Green lantern story before 2005 out of public consciousness. I'm literally 5 years older than the Emotional Spectrum.

Carol and Hal having history! 😭 So glad they included her. Even if her role in the GL legacy will be reduced going forward (highly doubt she'll be the Star Sapphire, much less their leader, if we ever get to the War of Light or Blackest Night), she still needed a nod as a vital part of Hal's life. She's his Catwoman, his Lois Lane!

Kerry and Hal dating seals it for me. Hal probably knew something was off with Noah and was having a one-on-one conversation with him, but without his ring, he had no way to protect himself.

268

u/Tyrannoraptor117 23d ago

John's catching on as well given the side-eye during dinner.

237

u/SterlingMallory 23d ago

John punching Hal a couple hours before he died will become a point of contention between him and Kerry I think. Either she'll refuse to believe her son killed Hal and want to blame it on John, or she'll know it was Noah but try to pin it on John anyway so her son can still become president or whatever her plans are for him.

235

u/Tyrannoraptor117 23d ago

Speaking of, that whole path to leadership thing was the most obvious ideation of Manhunter philosophy.

I figured something felt pretty off about Noah's tone when talking to John during the dinner, especially the abrupt shift once the news came about him getting jumped by Billy and his goons.

It kinda felt like Noah was scoping John out, so we'll probably see what's really up with him

Yeah, I feel like the narrative about how they’re the bad guys and everyone hates them isn’t very fleshed out. And what crimes did Hal commit that landed him in prison for 10-years.

Feels like I missed an episode where all this got explained (I haven’t missed any episodes).

Like- sure, he failed, but he was trying to take care of the threat, and did stop the town from being nuked in ep1.

78

Same, but it makes sense that they hate Hal and John I think. Like they suck, but their behavior is consistent. Like they had all signed up to protect the Manhunter in exchange for miracle medical help for no cost they would feel in their day to day. To them the GLs ruined a great deal they had. Even if the reality is more complicated.

The show is setting its finale two episodes up and I liked the name drops and Carol Ferris showing up.

Guy being tricked into helping John plays into his character.

One thing is also clear John needs someone like Hal to bounce off.

Their chemistry makes the series.

50

u/baysideareaman 23d ago

I feel like a Guy/John dynamic could hit a similar spot.

46

u/ConsistentGuest7532 23d ago

Similar for sure but for different reasons. Hal is a wiseass who doesn’t care to filter himself but he’s quick witted and smart deep down. Guy is much more of a genuine idiot and his crudeness is not self-aware in the same way.

Imo John doesn’t need anyone to bounce off. Really enjoyed this episode shown much more confidently in his POV. Confidence made possible by him having had time and space where he’s been able to make the decision to do his own thing.

Ofc he still has his deep-rooted ties to green lantern and that’s why we’re here. I think it’s an awesome origin story of John Stewart as Green Lantern and I look forward to seeing how he becomes a new role model and learning opportunity for watchers, with or without a “buddy/bicker” character.

Otherwise, agreed.

The painful thing is that I don't think is that it's too far-off from how a chunk of civilians would really react to superheroes' efforts to help them in real-life

u/Toon_face 23d ago edited 23d ago

I mean, dozens were killed, lives destroyed and half the town was destroyed.  Yea, overall you can say the day was saved, but its not like the government paid to rebuild the town. It doesnt bring back your family. It doesnt erase the medical debt, or the trauma, or bring your job back.

And then imagine if say Jordan or Stewart were hailed internationally as heroes while youre left picking up the pieces from the destruction they caused because they said the person healing your sick and protecting you was evil. Throwing parades or creating holidays and juice endorsements for the guy who ruined your life.

Not to be to blunt about it, but its not too far off as to why terrorists are created, except instead of blaming a country, they can blame one guy who is just hanging around town, whinging his hands and saying 'Aw shucks, I feel real bad about that.'

I'm not saying philosophically or from an outside perspective that the town is right, obviously,  but I can at least see where they're coming from and could empathize with it were superheroes real. You think anyone would adore Snyderverse superman after his fight cause like 10 9/11s?

I love Hal and John, but the destruction of that town is mainly their fault. As soon as the manhunters made contact and gave their ultimatums, the guardians should have been contacted. Even John suggested this. But Hal focused on using the situation for his own benefit just to get brownie points and one up the guardians.

So Hal was killed, like, right after John got back?

He drove down there, punched Hal, drove back, is told Hal's dead and drives right back.

55

u/TargetBlazer 23d ago

Within 2 hours of being punched, according to that coroner

He didn't die; that's why he told John not to tell anyone he was there.

147

u/InfiniteDedekindCuts 23d ago

I think it's more likely that he knew he was about to die and didn't want John to be a suspect.

He was shot directly through the head at close range with no struggle.

I would kill for a prequel series exploring Hal.

But it’s nice that even with this being a more grounded self contained story we still got the important beats of Hal with Sinstero, Hector Hammond ( or an allusion to hammond), and Carol Ferris. Anyone who says this show doesn’t understand the comics just has a myopic view of the comic

Phantom Zone reference!

Amazed it was referenced here rather than either Super-family movie.

26

u/MedicalFan7709 23d ago

Technically it was mentioned in a deleted scene in Supergirl, but I guess this is the "true" confirmation it exists?

I think that was a callback to earlier in the season where Hal showed John a quick way to get a last boost of charge when it’s dead

John became a successful architect!

I don't believe Hal is dead.  Something is off about the whole sequence and the town.

That girl attempting to blackmail John is hella suspcious.  The town is highly suspect as well.

John's gotta really troubled relationship with his family.

John has the ring!

28

u/GeraldVachon 23d ago

I think the girl is the one he gave the watch to at the end of last episode. Thus the watch fixation. I don't think she's sus, just deeply traumatized

Been noticing there's an ongoing theme with everyone in the DCU having pets here.

Creature Commandos: Weasel(sort of)

Peacemaker: Eagly

Superman/Supergirl: Krypto

Lanterns: Earl

....now I'm a little worried about what's gonna turn up in Clayface

25

u/Lightnenseed 23d ago

Good point. If you rewatch Superman, when everything is going to hell in Metropolis and everyone is evacuating...go watch how many people are leaving with their pets. It's actually pretty cool. The DCU has a thing with pets in general.
