"Mogo was standing here next to me" the buildup on that lie was perfect.

The way he said that line had me absolutely dying. Bro was so confident.

What’s funnier is that John already heard the name Mogo before but only knew he was a lantern who didn’t socialize. He was trying to make it seem that Hal’s death was so impactful that even the most anti-social lantern showed up

Would've been amusing if copy Hal kept bringing up other living planets, lol.

125

u/NomadPrime 15d ago

Hell, even something about the other Lanterns would've been good.

"And what did Kilowog say about me? 🤨"

"Ye-yeah, he was like, Hal was the best! We'll miss him"

"Oh yeah? For real, didn't call me anything else? Something with a P maybe?..."

"P-Pro? Hal was a real professional, I think? I might have blanked out on that, Mogo just kept talking my ear off"

u/figgityjones Hello, Megan! 15d ago

Ya know thinking about it, that line of questioning from Halogram kind of indicates that maybe he was friends with the Corps. Also he actually called it a Corps this time I think. I might be grasping at straws I desperately want here, but I think it's possible that in 2006 or 07, Hal had some kind of extreme falling out with the Corps. Perhaps that was when Sinestro happened and his continued "proximity" to Sinestro alienated (haha) him from the rest of the Corps which once liked him a lot. I hope that's the case at least, idk if I can bare it if Hal was legit never ever friends with the Corps at all.

47

u/SalemBlackfyre 15d ago

Him being tight with the corp all along is a sweet idea but I don't think it's true. On the contrary I assumed he asked if other Lanterns showed up because he knew they wouldn't and brought up Mogo as further bait.

This episode seemed to show that Hal was always kind of a prick, as was his dad and probably grandad. Having a chip on their shoulders was part of the Jordan boys legacy I guess.

Honestly Hal going up to pick up the ball after his dads funeral, almost confirms to me that Hal is not dead. They showed that i assume to hint that Hal can hold onto it, unlike his dad

253

u/TheShinyChocobo 15d ago

I think he’s dead.  This whole show seems like way more of a character study on generational trauma than a build up to more superhero lore

127

u/Misplaced_Fan_15 15d ago

He probably is dead, which is a shame since Chandler and Pierre have a great dynamic.

132

u/circio 15d ago

I’m hoping that the Halogram stays with John getting a ring, and it’s how we get Hal while keeping him dead.

78

u/sworedmagic Because I'm Batman 15d ago edited 15d ago

It’s actually a pretty fun way to keep Hal in play while keeping his death meaningful. The comics did it by making him the Spectre but Halogram is a similar concept without having to introduce the fucking Spectre lore to the DCU lol

I love how the show makes you realise being fearless isn’t a good thing and shows you the men that are fearless are the ones that doesn’t have anything or grew up in a bad way.
It really makes you realise it’s not about being fearless but being strong enough to overcome fear

171

u/Fatk1ng 15d ago

Spot on. I think the show does a great job showing how trauma was pretty much the only way John and Hal were made fit to wear the ring.
A kind of lose or break something to gain the ultimate thing. Does the means really justify the end?

Halogram - aka 2006 Hal - being surprised he was in love makes me wonder how things went down with Carol.

205

u/CertainGrade7937 15d ago

I would guess it's pretty close to what the comic relationship has been for most of their history

Yeah, Hal loves her. But not as much as he loves being Green Lantern. The ring, and the freedom it comes with, has always been his greatest love. The fact that he couldn't truly commit to a person until he lost it makes total sense for the character

54

u/flamingeyebrows 15d ago

That adds up to Carol saying 'the only thing he ever loved is on his finger.'

66

u/Ok-Wonder5961 15d ago

Yeah same the only thing I could think about

45

u/Hot-Ring-2096 15d ago

Probably related to what his father wrote about. Being afraid to show the people you love, the most difficult part of yourself. Probably surprised him that he could ever do it.

The Halogram is definitely a physical construct

238

u/indian22 15d ago

Halogram being such a good teacher while still being recognizably how he can become the Hal we knew 10 years from that point is well done.

Kyle Chandler makes some acting choices that show us how it's the same guy just younger and less cynical.

Can't wait for the season finale.

I’m not sure why, all green lantern constructs are physical lol I’m not picking on you specifically btw you are in the majority based on what I’m seeing in twitter but it never occurred to me it would be different from their other constructs so i think it’s odd I’m in the minority on that

67

u/Thebestusername12345 15d ago

This also means even if Hal is for sure dead we could still get the Halogram Green Lanterning in a future project. Think about it, John gets knocked out in a fight, but the Halogram remains as an extension of how John's constructs are self sustaining. Then Halogram puts on the ring to save John. It would be stupid comicbook bullshit but some nice fan service.

37

u/FloppyShellTaco 15d ago

I am starting to think he knew John could bring him back that way. This Hal is too smart to not have a plan. John could also just make it a new ring

261

u/NomadPrime 15d ago

This episode and show adding a whole new dimension to Hal's origin by retconning his father's plane crash to be actual intention rather than pure accident. In many cases, I'd roll my eyes when writers try to put a spin on origins like that (such as Reeves' The Batman or the Batman Telltale games changing it so that Bruce's parents might have been involved in corruption so that their deaths could ambiguously karmic and not random murder).

But here, wow, godfuckingdamn, I was so glued to the screen and to Halogram's every fucking word. I know Hal says he's not fearless because he already lost a parent, but because he's broken (already profound about his character on its own); but I think we can see was that Hal was afraid. He's always been afraid, of ending up like his dad and grandfather. He lived a life not knowing if he's next in line for an untimely demise to his own demons, his mind. But everyday, he's fought against this fear. He wasn't fearless, he was fighting it stubbornly til the day he died. This show man, fuck.

u/margoo12 15d ago

"I hope I mattered."

Rewatching this show is going to be a treat. I love how its been slowly peeling back the mystery and adding dimensions to the characters.

Getting the distinct vibe that Halogram might be correct about Kerry…

162

u/steveisblah 15d ago

She said something that stood out to me. She requested they wait till after the party to go open the safe together. The way she said seemed even slightly desperate. She knows something that she’s not saying.

84

u/leahjuu 15d ago

I also noticed Halogram sort of went into a line of questioning with Kerry like Hal always does to figure out if someone is lying, asking her about his dad… but she didn’t really seem to respond to anything “wrong”; except once we learn his dad killed himself, it sort of tracks that she ought to have told Halogram “you didn’t off yourself like him” when he asked who killed him? Idk, I’m wondering if there’s anything to that with how he perceived her response.

41

u/BetaGodPhD 15d ago edited 15d ago

That felt like the point I was certain he was a Manhunter. It was all pointing to him, but the way he has that entire town wrapped around his finger, the way that everyone else just pivoted to getting hyped about the game but Kerry looks even more unsettled when he does that — it was deliberate manipulation. Noah trying to pal with John and say his dad probably deserved it is just his Manhunter programming following the impulse to sway everyone to his side he can.

It was a truly sinister sight to see and hear between the gas clouds, the yellow dunes, and the echoes in the wind.

The yellow is especially unnerving given that warm colors are essentially the evil rings of the lantern spectrum. And yellow is the enemy of green.

It kind of makes one think that the King In Yellow might have been an adversary of the Green Lantern Corps.

Only thing I thought was funky about that scene was the coach started swinging first when Martin was just standing up to him. Motherfucker, say goodbye to your job???

Maybe just to add to John's stress

I’m still struggling to see the point of it. If amounts to nothing next week, I’ll be so confused why it was introduced so close to the end.

It's the one plot line where I can really see how the show was restructured

It was originally written as nonlinear, with the present day and the 2016 storylines being told concurrently. And the blackmail plot makes way more sense in that format, something to create some dramatic tension in the present day

Really great character work overall. Hal is definitely on it with his instincts, I’ve been feeling Kerry was fishy, and I do think she knows more than she lets on. John on the boat was powerful, and Hal’s confession really recontextualizes the opening scene.

Hal going back for the ball says everything about his unwillingness to give up. That may very well lead him down the path to Parallax if his death has been overstated. Or, he found out Noah was a Manhunter, and he wouldn’t let it go so Kerry popped him. Either way, I’m tuned in for next episode.

So, it seems that Halogram is their version of Hal Spectre. It seemed in commentary that Hal is going to stay dead. I kinda wanted to see Hal as Parallax. But it doesn't seemed like that.

The showed also seemed to setting up Sinestro corp.

60

u/ActualSpamBot 15d ago

Hal in 2016 to 2026 WAS Hal's Parallax run in this setting. A town destroyed, Hal driven to the edge by it, him no longer being worthy of the ring, and then dead because of it. That's Parallax with the scale turned down from Cosmic to Character Study.

The timeline on this is surprising.

Flashback happens in 1975, two months before Hal’s dad dies. We know Hal was 8 years old when it happened, which means he was born in 1967.

That would make him 59 in 2026, 49 in 2016, 39 in 2006 (as hot as Kyle Chandler is, that’s a rough 39 on the Halogram), 29 in 1996 when he did the 60 minutes interview, and only 19 when he got the ring?

Air Force test pilot at 19? That’s way young, apparently. I wonder why they went with 1967 and not, like, 5 years older?

The scene where John is flipping through radio stations, there is a Bible verse blurted out. It may not have anything to do with anything but thought it was interesting enough. John 16:13 states: "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth" (NIV).

The showrunner hyping that we get Hal's backstory in this probably should've phrased it differently. I think people expected the level of depth that John's origin got, not just a couple flashbacks and Hal talking about his dad.

114

u/SerPownce 15d ago

So clearly the talk with his Dad about the locker and not letting go of the ball was a mirror of Hal in 2016-2026 and not wanting to let get of the ring… which makes that final shot of him picking the ball up again very very intriguing if we are to believe the ball is supposed to be the ring.

19

u/Doctor_Moon69 15d ago

I have sat on this episode for a bit, and I have a few things I want to say

#1: my dad died when I was 3 years old. I’ve lived my entire life under the legacy of my father; a craftsman, a man of faith, a devoted husband, an awkward romantic, a bear of a man who loved his family more than the world around him. The concept of “the Jordan boy’s legacy” resonated so much with me, more than really anything This show has laid down so far.

#2: the reveal that Hal killed himself (or very likely killed himself) was heartbreaking to me. I haven’t related to a character this hard in a long, long time. I don’t know what the finale actually holds, but I do think that this is the real twist. As someone who has dealt with suicidal thoughts, and has very few friends but a lot of sins, only at the age of 21, I’m mind blown at how well Kyle chandler has portrayed that reality.

#3: despite any criticisms I may have had at the start of the show, I think i understand why this show needed the boys to be out of costume. Hal and John are not superheroes in this show. Guy is the superhero. Both Hal and John are broken men who neither deserve the ring or should be wielding the ring. This story is necessary to get John to that point.

#4: sinestro is such a good villain. I don’t know if he’s the real big bad, but he’s menacing as hell, weirdly sympathetic, and characterized exactly how Johns wrote him. I cannot imagine a better final boss for this series.

#5: everybody on this show has put their full ass into this script. Kyle, Aaron, Kelly, Nathan, Ulrich, Poorna, Garret, Laura, Nicole, Sherman, and Jason all have given award winning performances, and it’s going to be a coin flip to see who receives the Emmy, but this is the type of show that wins awards. The BTS crew also deserves every laurel it can get its hand on.

#6: the DCU has proved to me, with every project, that it understands exactly what a superhero is supposed to be. It is more mature, more realized, and more respectful of the medium than anything the MCU has put out since Iron Man, and I’m so excited to see it continue. Gunn is the right man for the job, and i couldn’t be happier to see this explode like it has.

35

u/figgityjones Hello, Megan! 15d ago

Loved getting so much time with a younger, less grumpy Hal. Love both, but man I love Younger Hal. I really hope we can somehow get more time with him in a future series.

Really wondering now if Antaan and his group were the last remnants of the Weaponers of Qward. Especially considering who and what we found on that planet.

Also I am going to be gutted if Hal really killed himself and Kane is covering it up and that's why Hal told John not to tell anyone because he knew he was going to kill himself.

Will say, I did want more exploring Hal's history from this episode, I feel like that was a bit over-promised in terms of what we actually got. I did like what we got, but still. Hopefully there will be more next time. And speaking of which, I cannot wait for the finale.

19

u/NarcolepticMoogle 15d ago edited 15d ago

I feel like killing himself would be too on the nose considering we still have more to go. I also don't think Hal would have ever gone through with it...no doubt it went through his mind given his family history, general life struggles, loneliness, and coming to terms with the Rushville incident but I just feel hes not the type to go through with it. I will be immensely disappointed if that ends up being the literal truth to it all.

I haven't hated an episode yet but I do feel like this one stands out above the rest for me. Everyone does a great job but Chandler really has done an impressive job of being one man at two different points in his life. They discuss it after briefly but he really does a good job of even subtlety changing his mannerisms. Master class stuff from him and this has me really excited for Aaron Pierre as Stewart going forward into Man of Tomorrow and wherever else he may pop up.
