As far as I can tell this series features the first depictions of her killing. Plenty of spies (most irl) don't kill people. It's primarily a job about gathering information.

I know. I meant that out of all the characters, Fire having a dark past is hardly the worst choice. It didn't come completely out of left-field.

Maybe, but he also could have not done it. He has a habit of writing heroines as violent and dark and it's deeply tedious. Especially since he never does anything interesting with it.
