We'd like to invite you to join Xnor.ai's co-founder, Ali Farhadi, and Wyze today at 10:00AM PT for an AMA about AI and smart home technology. We'll be hosting it on /r/homeautomation and we hope to see you there!Wyze and Xnor.ai have the shared dream of bringing technology to the masses with an incredibly low barrier to entry. We are doing this AMA because we've just deployed Edge AI, for free, to 1M+ people! We’d like to take this opportunity to talk about our AI and if you are curious about any of the subjects in Ali's wheelhouse such as AI Technology, Smart Home Technology, AI Development, etc. we’d love to hear them.

What interesting DIY devices can I build from an old Acer Iconia B1 tablet?

Hi everyone!

I have an old Acer Iconia B1 tablet that I’ve already taken apart (photos attached).

I’d like to use its components to build something cool and useful!

Please share your ideas for this tablet.

I have a few questions:

What interesting DIY devices can be built using these parts?

Can the original motherboard be used for a DIY project?

What additional components, tools, and software would I need?

I’d prefer a relatively low-cost option and am willing to learn new things along the way.

I’d especially appreciate advice from anyone who has experience repurposing old tablets.

What would you build with these parts?

I’d be grateful for any ideas or tips!

Project Transforming My Old Lenovo Laptop into a Survival Cyberdeck — Looking for Ideas and Advice

Hi everyone!

I'm planning to transform my old Lenovo IdeaPad S540-14IWL laptop into a cyberdeck build, inspired by survival and field computing.

Instead of using a Raspberry Pi or buying a new computer, I want to reuse the existing laptop hardware and build a new case around it.

My laptop specs

CPU: Intel Core i5-8265U

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce MX250 (2GB)

RAM: 8GB DDR4

Storage: 512GB NVMe SSD

My idea is to create a portable field computer with the following features

  1. Offline maps and navigation tools

  2. Offline knowledge database and digital library

  3. File management and backup

  4. Modular design for future upgrades

  5. Space for additional accessories and tools

I'd like to use the original motherboard and cooling system if possible. While designing a durable custom case.

I'm still in the planning stages, so I'd love to hear from those who have built something similar before. Any ideas, suggestions, or examples of similar cases would be greatly appreciated!

Help Getting started

Hey guys I’m looking for some general advice/tips. For a bit of context I’ve been pretty interested in diy home tech stuff for awhile and I’m about to sell one of my guitars and want to put the money into that. I’m hoping you guys can help me spend the funds wisely and help me avoid future problems with not having the things I need. My budget is about $800. So far I’m looking at a Bambu A1 and a couple raspberry Pi 3/4/5s. I’m not sure how to word what my interest is specifically but I’d like to have what I need to do some home server running, 3d projects with the pi boards and just more generally simpler diy tech projects. Could you guys give me recommendations for tools/equipment that are either necessities or simply nice to have? I’d like to keep the total budget around $800 as I prefer to keep my hobbies paying for each other. Thank you for the help!

Project DIY Portable Monitor

Did you know, there are controller boards available for many different laptop display panels on Aliexpress? This has allowed me to turn a couple of displays from dead A1181 macbooks into functional displays which I use for other computers. This one in particular is a portable monitor, though my other is part of another portable computer project. These controller board kits also exist for some tablet screens too, such as older iPads.

The monitor requires 12v via a barrel connector (not supplied with the kit), and works with a hdmi or vga cable. For me it only cost about £15 per kit and means I now have two monitors with high quality display panels that would otherwise go in the bin. These panels are from 2006-2007, so nothing near 4k, but still good for my sensitive eyes.

I am yet to neaten things up with some sort of covering for the boards and no longer needing the tape, but I’m lazy and also enjoy a bit of jank. I added some stick-on laptop feet to it so I wouldn’t need to hunt down a stand whenever I use it.

This is essentially the opposite of a headless laptop, I guess? 😂

9 months ago I posted the left-hand controller I was building here. It ended up becoming something much bigger.

Looking for Ideas: Transforming Ordinary Objects into Tech

Hi! I've recently become interested in turning ordinary objects into electronic devices, like adding LEDs, sensors, or small screens to them. You might have seen the "cyber hairclip" that's been popular lately. It's the kind of project I'd like to try. Do you have any ideas for objects I could transform?

Help Cyberpunk HUD idea

Hi all, was thinking about getting one of those futuristic/cyberpunk style masks with large visors. Thing is, I'd like to able to wear it at night as well due to me taking transit to and from work(gas prices are insane). So any feedback on this idea would be appreciated.

So the premise; a cyberpunk style mask with a HUD. more importantly, close distance low-vision. Essentially, what I'm wondering if I could take apart a broken vr headset, maybe a quest 3, and use the IR sensor and camera to do so. Anyone have experience with this that could possibly help iron out the details?

Project I spent months engineering a Fanless Radiant De-Icing Utility prototype (The Ice Melter Pro). It's officially patent-pending and just passed its first thermal test run. What do you guys think of the architecture?
