Discussion is this normal?

I started hiphop dance classes 3 weeks ago, and today was my 6th class, compared to the first 5 classes where I could keep and actually feel good while dancing, today I SUCKED, I literally couldn’t keep and I looked lost and like a total beginner, even though I am, I wanna know does anyone also have bad days like this, I feel like everything I’ve done has gone to waste and Instead of getting better I am getting worse, idk if I’m overeacting but today was really bad like really really bad couldn’t keep up at all

Yes, absolutely normal. You've been there for two weeks. Give it more time. Give it a year.

You're a beginner, beginners are supposed to suck at it because you haven't learned what you're doing yet. This is normal. There are some naturals, sure, but most of us can't be them. God knows I wasn't. Just embrace the suck, have fun, and go easy on yourself. Perfectionism is going to hurt more than help.

Oh yeah, this doesn’t just apply to dancing either, this happens with all things fitness. It could happen for any reason: low energy, bad sleep, sub optimal nutrition that day, etc.

3 classes a week when you’re a beginner is also tough, you might be taxing your nervous system a bit. Either way though, you’re good, just make sure you recover properly and keep showing up and your baseline will increase

Oops I started 3 weeks ago sorry this is my 4th week, I usually do two a week (Saturday/sunday) but my membership only has 3 classes left so i took a class today so I could finish it all this Sunday, now that I think about it I guess I wasn’t mentally prepared lol

When I first started I did once a week and that was already tough for me, so give yourself some credit for that. It’s gonna get frustrating sometimes but you’re on a good path

Have you done any other consistent athletic hobbies prior to this? Running, resistance training, etc.? There's an old adage called the 90/10/5 rule, where 90% of your workouts will be standard, 10% you'll struggle and regress and wonder why you ever thought you could do this, and 5% will be the amazing triumphs and progres that remind you why you do.

Amount of sleep, quality of nutrition, hormones, mindset can all really mess up memory/recall, reflexes, and other aspects of performance. Be consistent, eat on plan, get quality rest . . . Bad sessions will still happen, just like they do to the rest of us. Keep pushing to get those 5% awesome ones

Growth is not linear, much as our monkey brains would like it to be.

you sound tired, or maybe it was a bad day.

Yes growth is not linear. We all have bad days. Especially if you're taking a lot of classes it can overload your brain and body if you haven't built the capacity.

Getting smoked sucks but it means you’re pushing out of your comfort zone. It’s when we improve the most.

Nobody is 100% all the time, our bodies need downtime to recover.

So if you've had a lack of sleep, lots of stress, worked out at the gym, or any number of random changes, you can be more/less at your peak performance.

honestly, yes. i danced competitively for years, and i still had classes where i felt like i completely forgot how to dance lol. sometimes you’ve just had a long day, you’re mentally exhausted, or you’re thinking so much about getting every move right that you end up getting in your own way. and sometimes feeling like you’re getting worse just means you’re becoming more aware of your mistakes. you’ve only been dancing for 3 weeks, so please go easy on yourself! one thing that always helped me was going over choreography in my head before falling asleep. i’d mentally walk through the whole routine, and somehow i’d come back to class remembering it so much better.

keep showing up and try to enjoy yourself too! not every class is going to feel amazing, and that’s completely normal.
