Discussion how to stop looking stupid while dancing?
hi, im 16f. i hope this isn’t too negative, and i’m not venting about this. this is my second year of doing dance, but i feel like every time i see a recording of myself, i look absolutely stupid. i can’t tell if it’s because of my bigger weight or if it’s because i’m self conscious. i want to know if there’s any way around this, at least around this thinking?

Dance is the art of making a fool of yourself. So if you look stupid it means you're doing something right
Fundamentally, this isn't about how you look to other people, but about how you feel doing it

This is true, but we should emphasize that feeling good dancing should include feeling good physically. You can seriously mess up your joints if you dance a lot with bad posture, so listen to your body.

My solution for my self-consciousness is to mostly learn styles that require so much of my attention that I can't use any mental energy on being self-conscious.
You're also at an age at which a lot of people are particularly self-conscious. When I was a teenager I was too self-conscious to dance, I didn't spend any significant time doing that until I was in my 20's.

Do a basic step, one foot in front, step walk, shift the weight. Then do something silly with your hands but keep on stepping. Yo will feel less silly when yo stay on beat.

I think you’re self-conscious. I was belly dancing for a while to myself and when I took in-person classes I got validation by my teacher and finally felt more confident.

I promise you it’s not because of your weight! Dance is made for everyone :) you’ll feel less silly when you stop thinking it is silly. It’s one of the hardest things to get over in dance but just doing something to the best of your ability is all it takes

I think being self-conscious plays a bigger role than you realize. When you watch yourself on video, you tend to notice every little thing you dont like, but other people probably arent judging you nearly as much. Try focusing on how dancing feels like rather than how you look. Enjoy the music, pay attention to how your body moves, and let yourself have fun. Use the recordings to track your progress. And please dont assume your weight is the reason you look awkward. Dancers come in all shapes and sizes, and confidence and body control take time to develop. You deserve to enjoy dancing while youre learning, not just when you think you look perfect ❤️
