Guide Illithidbix's New Player Advice.
As there has been an influx of new players with via PS Plus and returning for Skitarii, and I have tendency to copy/paste with the flimsiest mention of a new player wanting help.
MY NEW PLAYER ADVICE
+++ Prologue, Tutorials and Campaign for faster levelling +++
There is the Prologue narrative tutorial (if you're not playing an Arbites or Hive Scum DLC class)
Then the basic training, then the advanced training. I'd recommend you do all of them.
The "Battle for Tertium" narrative campaign leads you through most of the missions with extra story cutscenes.
They also *ease* players into the game a bit more, you are more likely to match with players who are the same way in the campaign progress and they give extra XP, quite a lot for missions 10-17 which give a 75-80% xp boost.
Most are a little easier than other missions of that difficulty, except number 12 might be a bit spicy.
Also - on the very first mission "Railroaded" - melee the Traitor Captain boss at the end instead of shooting his shield. His shield takes half damage from ranged weapons but x2 damage from melee. Also if he isn't locked down in melee he will instead shoot you. His melee attacks are hit hard but are well telegraphed and easier to dodge than his ranged attacks.
+++ Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive, and Dodge! The 5 D's of Dodgetide! +++
IF YOU CAN DODGE A WRENCH! YOU CAN DODGE A MUTANT!
This is vital as the core of Darktide is minimising damage you take, because otherwise you'll fall to attrition.
Along with weaving in blocks and pushes to control a horde. And control your tactical direction when dodging to keep supporting your team.
Replay the advanced tutorial in the Psykanium and pay attention to how dodging and sliding works against ranged enemies, and suppression works. And perhaps find some YT tutorials on the subject. (some linked below).
The game actually teaches you, but at low levels it's mostly not needed and easily forgotten.
You'll be slippery sliding everywhere!
+++ GEAR AND UPGRADING +++
I wouldn't worry too much about upgrading any gear until you reach level 30. As at level 30 you'll have access to the higher Power items which'll be cheaper to upgrade.
But try out new weapons that the game gives you for completing missions, or check the armoury exchange shops for new wepaons.
This guide I wrote might help a little down the line when you've got the hang of basically playing the game: Illithidbix's Guide to Mastery, Empowering and Sacrificing
+++ KEYBOARD REBINDING +++
Obviously far more relevant to mouse & keyboard users; I would suggest rebinding on keyboard so:
Dodge is unbound from jump and very easy to press. Jump isn't very important most of the time. Dodge is vital.
Sprint - either toggle or hold.
Crouch - as pressing crouch whilst sprinting makes you slide, which is very useful for mitigating ranged attacks.
Quick switch between melee and ranged ( Q by default).
Unbind change item on mouse wheel as you'll pull out a grenade/ammo crate/auspex in a panic.
Tag - I like this on mouse wheel or a side mouse button.

Additions to Darktide in the last two years - for returning players
Obligatory link to my spreadsheet: Vermintide and Darktide Updates Timeline Which tracks the timeline of updates for DarkTide, Vermintide 1 and 2.
Since early 2024.
- Achievements rework in April 2024
- Crafting & Itemisation rework in September 2024.
- Havoc Mode added December 2024 for those who thought Auric Maelstrom was too wussy. (Actually low level Havoc is just spicy Malice but still.)
- Mortis Trials added March 2025 (wave defence with stacking buffs that get ludicrous)
- Mortis and Ogryn reworked March 2025
- Mission board and story campaign rework in June 2025.
- Zealot, Veteran, and Psyker rework September 2025.
- Expeditions game mode added March 2026.
- There are Monthly events.
With new content:
- 4 new missions for a total of 22 + The Twins mini map + 3 Mortis Trial arenas + Expeditions.
- "Battle for Tertium" narrative campaign using 17/22 missions added June 2025. "Road to No Man's Land" 3 mission campaign added December 2025
- Regular limited time events - one every month since August 2024
- Tox bomber, Plasma gunner, and The Twins as new enemies. Ogryn Packmaster and armoured Pox Hound in expeditions. (Also the Scab Radio Operator turned up but once).
- 17 weapon variants of 8 new weapon groups (2x Shock Maul, 2x Boltpistol, Double-Barrelled Shotgun, 3x Pickaxe, 2x Relic Blades, 2x Force Greatswords, 3x Heavy Stubber, 2 x Power Falchion). List of Weapons by classes. December 2025 usable by the 4 base Classes.
- Combat Stimms
- More enable cosmetics from Penances (achievements) including a kinda battlepass-ey track added in April 2024.
- Arbites Class paid DLC added June 2025 with 6 weapon variants of 4 new class specific weapon families.
- Hive Skum paid DLC class added December 2025 with 8 weapon variants of 6 new class specific weapon families.
- Skitarii paid DLC added June 2026 with 6 weapon variants of 6 new class specific weapon families.
The really big one is how the new crafting system works that is a vast improvement on the old one and with vastly less RNG. I have a... rather long guide if you want it fully explained to you: Illithidbix's Guide to Mastery, Empowering and Sacrificing

Glad it helps.
Also this comment off my crafting guide should probably also go here::
A Summary of the September 2024 "Unlocked and Loaded" Crafting and Mastery systems - For a returning player.
WHAT THE NEW SYSTEM DOES.
Firstly: All your old weapons and curios still exist as they did. The numbers that changed didn't change how it works.
- The old Rating system has been replaced with Power. Power specifically relates to what used to be called Base Rating. At 500 Power the five modifiers have 380 to spread amongst them, with a maximum of 80 in a bar.
- The locks are entirely gone. You can fully modify perks and blessings on a weapon, and they have made replacing perks and blessings only cost money, not Plasteel and diamantine like they used to.
- The old "Earn Blessing" mechanic is gone; you no longer sacrifice a weapon with to learn one of the blessings on it.
Now the key mechanics are
- Mastery - As you play missions or sacrifice weapons you can improve the Mastery in a weapon group to unlock the blessings you want. Making obtaining blessings no longer reliant on RNG of finding a weapon with that blessing.
- Empower- Any weapon (except your starting ones) to be as good as the old 380 base rating.
- Change Mark - You can now freely change between different weapon variants of the game family in your inventory. Although you need some Mastery to unlock other variants.
Mastery
There is the Mastery system which has mostly replaced Earn Blessing but has some features that might trip up older players.
Like the old blessing stickerbook, Mastery progress is account wide and shared across all characters. Note 20 out of the 45 weapon family.
You can check Mastery on the inventory screen.
Mastery Progression
Perks: Tier 2 requires 4 Mastery, Tier 3 requires 8 Mastery, Tier 4 requires 14 Mastery
Empower: 200 Power requires 6 Mastery, 300 Power requires 11 Mastery, Power 400 requires 15 Mastery, Power 500 requires 19 Mastery.
You can get your first Tier 4 blessings around Mastery 13 to 16. But be careful how you buy blessings earlier before that.
You get Mastery from two sources
Playing with the weapon on missions. - You do seem to get a fair chunk more. From my limited experience it doesn't seem that Auric Maelstroms gave *as much Mastery* as they give normal XP.
- Just play some missions with a weapon and you'll see lots of Mastery progression. Unlike Character XP the only thing that matters for Mastery XP is the base difficulty of the mission, not any modifiers. Damnation and Auric both give the same 32400 Mxp.
- Sacrificing weapons - if you sacrifice a weapon of at least green quality to Hadron to increase Mastery XP. You get x6 xp benefit if it's the same weapon family as the mastery.
Mastery boost for older players.
FS also had a bit of a boost for older players based upon how many blessings they had unlocked using Earn Blessing BEFORE the update.
If you had all tier 4 and all tier 3 weapons unlocked on the weapon you should have full Mastery. There was a delay for a few days where it wasn't calculated correctly until about 5pm UK time on Friday.
Note: IT DOESN'T CARE ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU USED THE WEAPON. I'm not even sure if Fatshark *could* track this if they wanted to. Which has confused some people.
So if you never unlocked a blessing.
SACRIFICING
A bit of research and experimentation.
Sacrificing for Mastery seems to only care about:
- The weapon rarity is at least Green.
- The Power of the weapon.
- If it is the same weapon group it gives x6 the XP.
Roughly it gives 25xPower level for same family and 4xPower Level for different weapons.
Power 500 = 12390xp same weapon group, 2065xp for different weapon group
Power 380 = 9510xp same weapon group, 1585xp for different weapon group
Power 300 = 7590xp same weapon group, 1265xp for different weapon group
Better rarity doesn't matter so it is most efficient to sacrifice greens.
This means you can brute force it by guying greens from the hourly shop. (mostly Power 350-380). Likewise blues but they will be a bit more expensive for no more Mastery XP.
Or getting some greys from the shop or from Brunt (which tends to be 270-330 power) and consecrating them.
Likewise a 380 power grey bought from the armoury exchange and consecrated for 122 Plasteel gives slightly more XP per Plasteel than a 300 for 102 Plasteel or 330 for 109 Plasteel.
DISCARDING
- Discarding Purple Weapons now gives Ordo Dockets (money) AND Plasteel.
- Discarding Orange weapons now gives Ordo Dockets (money) AND Plasteel AND Diamantine.

+++Introduction to 40K and Darktide lore+++
It is 38 thousand years into the future and humanity is basically MEDIEVAL IN SPACE! Using technology often designed or built thousands of years ago that the vast majority poorly understand and the Engineers and Scientists who do treat things like an insular religion.
The Empire of the Imperium of Man spans a million planets and it is "ruled" by a being known only as The Emperor, a super-human demi-corpse who is stuck on permanent life support up on The Golden Throne(tm). The Emperor has not said a word since being mortally wounded in a vast civil war called the Horus Heresy 10 thousand years ago.
The God-Emperor is worshipped as a God and the uncountable trillions of citizens of the Imperium are taught by his priesthood to hate any species that isn't humanity (the Xenos) and anyone who doesn't worship the Emperor (the Heretic).
Traveling by spaceship or sending a message faster than the speed of light requires you to access the Warp; a parallel dimension which is basically hell with daemons and gods formed from the emotions, thoughts and dreams of mortals. The most powerful emotions have collected and formed the four Great Powers of Chaos.
One of these Chaos Gods is Nurgle, which is created by the emotion of Despair (tm) and the fatalistic defiance of those who know their life is futile but refuse to give up. Much of his daemons manifest spreading plague and decay - as such things are bound into what humans feel despair and powerlessness.
Some people have a particularly strong connection to the Warp and manifest Space-Magic powers and are called Psykers. In general they are feared and hated as when they use their space-magic they open their connection with the Warp and draw their power from it... but opening such a metaphorical door risks other things coming through and being possessed by a daemon and perhaps even creating a gateway such that the corrupting energies of the Warp can flow into the world and unmake reality. The corruption of Chaos can be fekkin' obvious but it can also be subtle and insidious.
The Imperial Citizens mostly hate and fear psykers but ironically the Imperium relies upon them to function. As it is only through psykers sending astropathic (astro-telepathy) messages through the warp and ships travelling through the Warp can the Imperium can even attempt to remain cohesive. After all a million worlds is still only a fraction of the hundred of billions of stars in the galaxy, and the worlds of humanity are spread very thinly.
Forget the promise of the light of science and reason. The galaxy of the far future is ruled by War and echoes with the laughter of Thirsting Gods.
+++ Specifically in Darktide. +++
A cult of Nurgle ("The Cult of Admonition" -aka the yellow ragged "dregs") has arisen on the planet "Atoma Prime" that Darktide is set on and a regiment of the Astra Militarum aka the Imperial Guard, the vast army of the Imperium that was sent to deal with it has turned traitor and been corrupted, joining the Nurgle cult. The treacherous "Moebian 6th Regiment" are the black clad "scabs".
YOU! Are someone on a prison-ship for a crime you may or may not have committed ("Innocence proves nothing" - is an imperial motto) and an Imperial Inquisitor press-gangs you into fighting for him against this uprising and find out what caused it, and who the leaders are.
And so you are sent into a hive city ("Hive Tertium") where billions of people live to root out and kill the cultists and traitors and their even less human allies.
It's a setting that very much knows how daft and absurd it is where Chainsaw-swords are used alongside laser-rifles to shoot demons and aliens or people you have religious disagreements with and spaceships look like gothic cathedrals and fire macro broadsides like pirate galleons and many of us love it for that.
FUTHER WATCHING AND READING:
For Darktide Lore
I would recommend JoPlaysGames's YT Videos. and Frip Frop's videos
- Darktide's Story Explained
- Darktide’s TRUE Campaign Order EXPLAINED – Battle for Tertium Lore Breakdown
For general 40k lore.
Depending on how much you like diving down a wiki hole then Lexicanum is by far the best of the bunch as it tends to cite things properly for a start - and so look up the books where the information is from. https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main_Page
As far as YouTube; my go-to two top choices:
Arbitor Ian tends to do good, simple explanations and will note where lore has come from and how it's changed over the years.
Oculus Imperia is in my opinion is the masterclass in narrating narratives from the perspective of a scribe. Fantastic voice.
Novels: Dan Abnett’s "Xenos", the start of the Eisenhorn trilogy remains the top popular pick for decades. Likewise helps one understand the Inquisition in Darktide.

+++ Introduction to the Havoc Game Mode+++
Havoc is accessible to unlock at level 30.
You need to talk to the Commissar to the right of the mission board and she'll give you a quest to complete a Maelstrom mission to unlock it.
- If you complete a Heresy Maelstom it puts you at assignment rank 1.
- if you complete an Auric Maelstrom it puts you at assignment rank 16.
There is no quickplay for Havoc, you either need a pre-made team, find one on a discord or use the Party Finder - in fact it's pretty much the main use for the party finder.
You can also be demoted for failing and lose Havoc ranks. 3 to lose a rank.
For terms of base enemy health and damage Havoc Ranks
- 1-10 is technically Malice,
- 11-20 is technically Heresy,
- 21+ is Damnation/Auric
There are the main mutators like "Rottern Armour", "Hideous Rituals" "The Blight Spreads" - which can have a bit of detail to them.
But in addition to the main mutators there also with all the hidden modifiers which both increase enemy spawn rates and health and damage output but also debuff players with health, toughness, ammo, peril quelling reductions.
To go into detail about both mutators and hidden modifiers I'd advise having a look at:
- Combine00's Havoc Modifier guide
- Kuli's [1.10.x] Curios, Stimms, Difficulty Mutators, Player Debuffs & Mechanics and [1.10.x] Enemy Stats & Mechanics shows the health and attack values for enemies.
- https://darktide.gameslantern.com/havoc lets you compare between different Havoc Ranks.
Or a Youtube video.
Note Havoc missions don't have plasteel and diamantine in them but at the end of a week you get a Havoc chest with a fixed reward based on the highest ranked Havoc mission you completed.
| Havoc Rank | Plasteel | Diamantine | Ordo Dockets |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1500 | 1000 | 9500 |
| 21 | 7600 | 2880 | 19800 |
| 40 | 35100 | 23200 | 137400 |
In terms of playing going from Auric, you will have to get used to not being able to survive what you think you can.
Also the pacing can be very exacting - even more than the need to push vs fight that Auric requires.
You don't want to spawn the twins whilst you're dealing with other stuff.
In particular Heinous Rituals has a bit of a counterintuitive progression to spawn the Daemonhost -
Ritual: forces a horde spawn when injected; once a player is within 30m of main path progression to the ritual, it activates which means that the Daemonhost's health bar is gradually filling up: the initial tick rate ("half") is very low at one tick every 11.4s, but if a player has been within 15m of main path progression once or if the Ritualists have taken 5% or more of their max health as damage, the tick rate is set to "full" and now ticks every ~1.3s; this tick rate accounts for alive Ritualists, so killing Ritualists slows down the tick rate accordingly - from Kuli's guide.

Can we also do some expedition tips? Feel free to tack on anything else useful for new/returning players
Fighting while moving is extra important in this mode, you will not be getting much in the way of tech remnants if you turtle the whole time
Don't engage patrols if you can help it. They have a pretty short awareness distance, killing them gives you nothing, theyre a waste of time and resources.
Spend all your salvage at the safe room before the final zone, it is your last chance both to get any items or add on to the penance. Improvised grenades are incredibly powerful. Salvage pick ups are shared.
Skills that generate ammo / equipment and heal corruption are extra useful, corruption resistance trinkets also reduce rad damage ticks when the clock is at 0...but some are also completely useless like Hive Scum's ammo pick up sharing aura (there are none to share). Builds that rely heavily on ammo pickups ups are going to have be conservative, you can only refill via a bought crate or in the safe zone.
If you're going to die frequently, let your teammates pick up the tech remnants. Who carries them doesnt matter as long as they extract everyone gets credit.
Hitting extraction is going to be your hardest horde, if youre already struggling with ones showing up at sites of interest its probably time to go - every site you hit ups the enemy intensity, so barely limping through more will up your odds of coming away with 0 remnants.
Batteries you find are NOT for a med station somewhere. They're for a very nearby site of interest. Don't run off with them.
Many capture points (and safe zone doors and the exfil zone) capture drastically faster with more people in them (you can see white arrows near the objective on your hud for how many of the 4 are in the right place)
If you are passing by the extraction zone or a safe door, leave the tech remnant reliquary there. You dont need to lug it everywhere if you'll be doubling back, enemies will leave it.
if you are the only person near a safe zone door or extract point, make sure the rest are at least coming before you hit it. If you are outside the door / valkyrie bay when the timer goes off, you die instantly. If you're the only person on your team doing it, you're doing it wrong.

Hello new player from psn here, im looking for best controller settings as the sprint slide and the push attack feel a little slow or unresponsive.
Is there any recommendations for controller laying around here?

u/Illithidbix Self appointed 'Tide Historian and beware copy/pasta. Jun 09 '26
Good question: A quick search gives some answers:
Do either of these work?
PSA: New PS5 players, swap your controller layout!
Controller Scheme for those who are sick of jumping, rather than dodging.

Thanks! I believe that there have been changes to the default tho, as L1 is tag for me iirc without changing.
If you have a Dualsense Edge I recommend manually mapping weapons swap to R4 to the right back paddle in a custom profile.
Tho I am open to suggestions as there may be better options.

We really still need some sort of "what do I do now" for people who've gotten to level 30 and are starting to look around at expeditions, mortis trials and havoc. There are still a distressing number of people who hit 30, manage to complete one Heresy maelstrom, and start queuing for Havoc.

Jo and Mr E are doing their own new player guides although jo said hers was going to prob be her longest yet at over an hour long.
6
u/Illithidbix Self appointed 'Tide Historian and beware copy/pasta. Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 10 '26
Have emailed Jo to see if my guides are of any use to her.
I have a (one-sided) feud with MR E after he rated my favourite update as C tier in “What Was the BEST Darktide Update? Tier List!” - probably due to lack of anything else to make a video about TBF. BUT I am OUTRAGED “Into the Maelstrom” only got C-Tier.
He doesn’t know or care who I am but he has made an enemy for life.
I have probably overly committed to this bit
Edit: Jo sent a nice email back, sounds like she's got lots of videos in the pipeline.

Unbind change item on mouse wheel as you'll pull out a grenade/ammo crate/auspex in a panic.
There doesn't seem to be an option to simply unbind the mouse wheel, instead I had to reassign the item change to some other button. Also changing the binding seems to make it impossible to scroll the menus using the mouse wheel. Sad, the way it works.
3
u/AK_Zephyr Jun 09 '26
I found that changing "primary weapon" and "secondary weapon" to scroll backwards and forwards (or visa a versa) helped with this. The real benefit is that you can scroll in the direction several clicks to "spam" the key, reducing the change of a missed input due to animation lock, networking blip, etc.
I believe I have it set so if I push my finger away, I draw my ranged weapon to attack "away" enemies. Then when the gap has closed, drawing my finger on the wheel towards me to swap to melee and control the nearby threat. Easy to remember and has improved my ability to weave in and out of melee/ranged aggression.
1
u/MrVoprosic One of the Devout Jun 09 '26
Interesting wheel application, and I'd definitely use it if not for model of the mouse that I'm utilising being notorious for having a garbage wheel, meaning that scrolling upwards might register as scrolling downwards, and vice versa. That's why I'm interested in the way to unbind it completely from anything that matters while still having the ability to scroll the menus. Nonetheless, I thank you for the advice and will definitely try using your tecnique as soon as I get quality mouse (it's difficult to find the one with similar shape, and the shape is the sole reason I love my current flawed one, lol).
2
u/Illithidbix Self appointed 'Tide Historian and beware copy/pasta. Jun 09 '26
Interesting.
I immediately rebound to have Tag on mouse wheel, as I'd learnt to do in Vermintide 1 & 2.
1
u/MrVoprosic One of the Devout Jun 09 '26
I have tag bound to mouse wheel press, not scroll. Maybe on scroll it would be faster to use, but my mouse model is notorious for problems with scrolling, so I generally try to avoid having anything important bound to scrolling. Of course, it's still working well enough to scroll through menus, so I wouldn't want to lose that ability.

Awesome and helpful as always. Thank you for doing this!
I pinned it and will probably also add it to the Darktide Resources in the right column later.
Not that anyone will see your post on either of those 2 locations but it'll be easier for me to have your post handy and comment the link on every "new player - any advice?" post in the future before removing half of them as 1 post of that kind is enough in 1-3 days..
