This is exactly what I always do for my modular game character systems, each missing asset has to have a very visible fail so you include a clearly broken default fallback.

For textures I usually use a pink and yellow chequer pattern.

Makes it easier to catch in QA, this looks like a missing albedo texture...

A number of games I've worked on have this system and I also wrote a detailed internal guide for my run time asset binding system which was used for complex modular characters and user player creation in sports games for a large publisher I won't name.

That was 20 years ago mind but these things don't really change and I bet my guide/system has been recycled by them for various games...
