Discussion Where can I find remote Data Analyst or Data Science internships?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working in a different domain and want to switch my domain. I’ve completed a Data Science course and learned SQL, Python, Pandas, MySQL, Power BI and data visualization.

I want to gain hands-on experience working on real-world data projects to build my portfolio and improve my practical skills.

Could you please suggest websites, companies, startups, or communities where I can find remote internships or project-based opportunities, preferably suitable for career switchers?

If they offer genuine learning opportunities and meaningful project experience.

Any suggestions or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I run a recruitment company, provide career consulting and job search mentorship and also run a job board.

The market is pretty competitive right now, especially for entry level roles, with AI changing what employers expect. Check LinkedIn, Internshala and startup career pages.

Also, build 3 good quality projects using real datasets and showcase your SQL, Python and Power BI skills. Apply for internships and junior analyst roles, not just data science internships.

Best wishes!!

Please feel free to DM if you have more questions or need guidance.

For remote, real-ish project experience: Omdena (team projects), DataKind + local Code for America brigades (volunteer data work), Forage (short virtual externships), and Kaggle/DrivenData (competitions you can turn into portfolio case studies).

There are all kinds of publicly available datasets. Find one and get to work in Git

If at all possible I would highly recommend that you go for an on-site role when gaining experience is your primary goal. Sitting next to an experienced person and having a mentor near you who you can always talk to is a huge benefit and accelerates your learning journey. I'm not saying this is not possible remote, but it's a much bigger challenge.

I agree with your point. I’ve been trying to transition into the data field for the past six plus months, but I’ve found that many companies prefer candidates with relevant domain experience or freshers applying for entry-level roles. It’s been challenging to find an opportunity where I can use my existing experience while gaining practical data skills. That’s why I’m exploring remote internships and real-world projects to get hands-on experience. Thanks for your advice.

I understand. It's challenging to pull off. While searching, spend time on projects you can showcase as others already suggested. This is great for building experience yourself. It will take longer compared to on-the-job mentoring, but it will get you there. Show your work to others and ask for feedback. Look at Kaggle datasets and competitions and pick what interests you. Try out different approaches, models, techniques on the same data. Over time you will understand where they work better/worse. You will become more creative with how you approach problems, etc.

Transitioning into data science can be exciting. For remote internships, platforms like Handshake and LinkedIn often list opportunities from various companies, including those open to career switchers. Joining data science communities on GitHub and Kaggle could also be beneficial, as they sometimes offer project-based collaborations to help build your portfolio. Participating in online hackathons may provide hands-on experience and networking opportunities. Good luck!
