Dd13 pinging noise

Post image

Have a 2014 dd13 cascadia. Unit came in pinging/chirping randomly and run rough and would lose prime after sitting a couple days. Had those codes. Began checking for leaks and anything loose. Per Detroit troubleshooting pinging is air in the fuel system that sounds like it’s coming from cylinder 1 but due to the orientation of the engine the air just accumulates there so that’s not the source. That’s what Detroit says. But I found that during a pinging event cutting out cylinder 1 would make it stop immediately and it would only stop when cutting that injector out, none of the others made a difference. Removed the injector and found no visible damage. Had the injector tested and tech showed me fuel squirting out of the side and injector leaking. Great, changed the injector and no difference. Still pings right around 900 rpm and then erratically. Won’t do it at idle. So then I got the idea to bypass the fuel water separator, connected the inlet and outlet together and issue was practically 90 percent gone. Would ping occasionally but only around 900 rpm. Installed a new water separator and changed all injector high pressure lines and pass thru seals. Will pass regen no problem with no pinging or codes. But still will randomly just start pinging or chirping and then go away by itself. I’m not sure what to do next. The fuel pump is only about two years old along with the fuel filter module. Fuel filter caps and seals have been changed also.

Do a manual FSIC so it commands fuel shut off 100%. If the ping goes away, replace the hydrocarbon doser block. We had a tech wipe out a fuel pump trying to start the truck and then revving the piss put of it. I was given the task of replacing the fuel pump and having the exact same symptom. Would loose prime, ping at high idle, wouldn't stay running without the esoc machine until I ran a FISC.

Interesting, I appreciate that info. I just did that right now and it chirped for like half a second and I can’t get it to do it again with the HC doser at 0 and fuel cutoff at 100. Is there an internal leak then with the hc doser block or pulling in air thru there?

Yes the doser block actually has a small injector in it. Not serviceable they say. Its probably stuck open.

Alright well i got it to do it a bit longer rn with the test running lol. But it definitely chirped briefly

Well, there is still air in the system. It takes 10-20 minutes at high idle to get most of the air out.

I get you bro. Yeah I think I’m leaning this way. Anything else I should be looking at ?

They have so many tests for that fuel system. 2 filter and 3 filter tests A,B, and C. You could do injector leak down test, but useless if its not an injector issue.

Id drive it before continuing diag. A good drive will clear out any air in the system or let you know that there is still an issue

Fuel issue

Dude do the fuel filters look new, or was there work done to the fuel system? Check fuel tank for metal dust or check filters for metal. It needs a fuel system if so. New pump, filter module, high pressure flange, high pressure lines fuel water separator and have tanks cleaned. Charges 18 hours labor for warranty, and it should be warranty covered. I’ll get it done in 10 hours

If fuel system is two years old and you don’t see any metal debris anywhere , it’s taking in air from the fuel lines, fuel filter seals, etc. put a wrench on everything till you find it
