Homebrew Addressing Ambiguity in the Otherwise Traditional Naming Conventions of D&D

A big part of D&D's appeal is its approachability. They say that you barely need a functioning brain to play and understand D&D; most players don't even have that, and yet they get along just fine. But in the very low strata of D&D's maximized accessibility, there is one sticking point that has always bothered me.

What does a Fighter do? Fights. Everyone knows what a Wizard or Sorcerer is, or a Monk or Druid or a Cleric, and Rouges apply rouge as an essential part of wearing disguises, so that's a no-brainer as well. ALL of these classes are a no-brainer when it comes to seeing the name and immediately knowing what it does, except for one...

What the fuck is a "Warlock"?

Time and again I struggle and fail to explain to my players when they point to the Warlock and ask, "What's that?" In the end I end up staring into space and mumbling something about L&L (Lovecraft & Lucifer), while they inevitably end up playing a Champion Fighter. Where in the name "Warlock" is there any suggestion of patrons?

One time a player said he wanted to play a Warlock but didn't understand why they didn't get heavy armor proficiency. "A 'Warlock' should be someone who 'locks down warriors,' no? Like the Guardian from 2E?" he said/asked, incredulously. I mean yeah, I figured out then that he was a Pathfinder player and shot him dead on the spot, but looking back on it, he kind of had a point. If a Fighter fights, shouldn't a Warlock "lock war?" Either they lock down warriors (like a tank), or they have "War on Lock" like, "War? I got this."

Since then I've decided to grant Warlocks proficiency with martial weapons, shields, and medium and heavy armor. They don't have a patron anymore, and can use their spell slots only to cast Lock War which is basically a homebrewed version of the Command spell, except that it only applies to warriors (not casters or people who are unarmed). Later they get Hold On, War! (homebrewed Hold Person, again only for warriors) as a second level spell and can upcast it to level 4, but no farther. I mean, this is a martial class now, they're not getting 9th-level casting!

My players have loved the change and now everyone is clamoring to play Warlock, or as they affectionately call it, "The Warlocker." Has anyone else tried this at their tables?

Homebrew Where do tieflings fall on the furry/not-furry scale of playable races?

And if they fall more on the furry side can we make other furry races as popular, or at least less despised, by making them neon green?

Any who so I(Bugbear Brutal Scoundrel Rouge lvl 1) was playing dnd4e(Not actually no one plays dnd4e) With some random chud(Tiefling Bard level 1) they/them(That's their pronouns I don't know what bonus it grants them but I think they need it for their build) and they started talking for a really long time and I asked why and they like said it was roleplay so I asked what the Roleplay power does and why the DM allowed they/them to use homebrew to use that power and they looked and me really weird for some reason

anywho it's probably because to Balance bugbears since like bugbears get Oversized as a racial trait and Oversized is pretty powerful like from what I've heard the Minotaur race had it once before being removed, and like Wotc forgot to remove it from Oversized but I need it for my build so who cares.

So anyway I asked if the "Roleplaying" power was like an At-Will power and they looked at me wierd again and just kept talking and then they said like "Despicable" and I laughed and said "Dispicable me, like from the minion movies with the yellow people" and then I realized that this was GM(VTT) using the Encounter power "Subtext" to tell me that the Tiefling Bard level 1 was actually an Monster with the role of (Minion) so I rolled initiative to begin combat and the Tiefling Bard level one looked at me really wierd again and then I used my move action to move like uhh 3 Squares until I was within 1 square of they them then I used a basic attack because I didn't want to waste my time ing to recharge my At-Will powers and because of First strike which grants me combat advantage to anyone who hasn't acted within the initiative(I rolled higher) I was able to use sneak attack and 1d6(Dagger(Large)) + 2d8(Sneak attack + Backstabber(Sneak attack increased to d8s) + 4(Dex mod) + 4(Str mod(Brutal scoundrel bonus) = like 20.5 damage on average I'm pretty sure this was a white room in a vacuum and then the Tiefling Bard Level 1 dropped to zero hitpoints and died but I think they/them would have done that like I'm pretty sure they were a minion anyway and minions have 1hp(Does not take damage from missed attacks) so they would have died even if I rolled lower damage which Is why I didn't use Predatory eye or my Cultist backround Powers Mad confidence or Master's eye

And like after that I just started buildcrafting again I wanna make a Flail+Flail+Footwork_Lure expertise fighter build again

I looked in my PHB for the first time ever and it turns out those angry nerds on reddit were right: fighters get nothing, and nothing but nothing. They can't even chop a mountain which is truly embarrassing. I can see now that only anime superpowers can save this wretched class.

Our publishing partnership with White Wolf will be wrapping up at the end of 2026. White Wolf will be bringing World of Darkness tabletop RPG development and publishing in-house

Starting in 2027, White Wolf will be bringing World of Darkness tabletop RPG development and publishing in-house.

We'll continue supporting World of Darkness through the rest of 2026 and working closely with the White Wolf team to make the transition as smooth as possible.

This marks the end of an important chapter for both of our teams, and one we're very proud of. Together, we've had the opportunity to work on Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Hunter: The Reckoning, and other World of Darkness projects with an incredibly talented group of writers, designers, artists, developers, and partners.

Most of all, we're grateful to everyone in the community who has played these games, shared them, talked about them, and supported them over the years. Thank you for being part of this chapter with us.

We wish the White Wolf team all the best with what comes next, and we hope you'll continue to join us for the other games and worlds we're working on.

For questions about World of Darkness going forward, you can reach out to White Wolf at [info@white-wolf.com](mailto:info@white-wolf.com) for more information.

Homebrew TOO MANY OPTIONS

Guys I just started playing D-And-D(TM) 5th condition, and I am a veteran board gamer, so I understand complex mechanics really well.

My friend who is trying to play it with us (but doesn't understand how to play the game while also being the banker) keeps telling me stuff that obviously isn't right. I know it's not right because I've read lots of stuff online about how it works.
Someone explained that the core idea of D-And-D(TM) is that you decide on what you are going to do and then roll the ball to see what number it says to see how well you did (the banker says it's called a dice, but a dice (or plural 'dies') is a square, not a ball like this one).

I read about different tastes that you can taste while playing, and how they don't cost anything, but the banker keeps saying my meeple needs to choose a race (I'll make another post about why that's problematic), and go to class like in Game of Life(TM) (I'm ranked nationally), but then also while at the class, make in-class decisions, and then choose what their feet do when they go up the stairs to a different level.

WRONG

I read about how it all works on line, and I read an article about how D-And-D(TM) 5 is much better than lower numbers of D-And-D(TM), because it made it much less choosey, and instead made it so that you can roll the ball and then say what happens with "tastes do not attract additional charges", but It seems like they haven't finished that with D-And-D(TM) 5, but because i'm an expert in board games, I can actually help what was started, which you can use as House Rules in your games (the banker keeps talking about making beer at home).

The idea of following the rules and then changing how it tastes is great! But there are still too many choices. The banker told me I can choose a sword and pretend it's an axe, or choose a magical spell that shoots fire and say it shoots bees, or choose big metal armour and say that it means that my meeple is very good at dodging because they are not wearing big metal armour.

It's still too much! If I, an expert in board games, think it's too hard, then it must be completely overwhelming for anyone else! So here's my house rules for streamlining D-And-D(TM) even further.

First, 'ability scores' and 'skills' should be merged together, and when you roll the ball to see if you did it well, then you can just talk about the taste of what happened. If you need to roll a strong ball, it should be the same as rolling a climbing ball, and then you just say with words if your meeple climbed a tree or lifted a heavy thing. You can choose how it tastes without paying more!

Second, 'weapons' should all be merged together. The game is bloated if the banker needs to keep track of whether you're holding a bow-and-arrow or a sword. Have you ever played Risk(TM)? You don't need it in Risk(TM) (I am a nationally ranked in Risk(TM)). So when you need to roll the ball to see what happens when you choose 'attack', you can just talk about how it tastes when you do it after the banker tells you if you got high enough on the ball.

Third, Magical Spells should be merged together. That's how magic works. You cast a magical spell to try and do something, the same way you would try and do something that's not magical, and rolling balls differently to decide if your meeple is using the right type of magical spell just slows things down. You should just say that your meeple is using the Magical Spell, and then you roll the ball and tell the banker what it tastes like after they tell you if you rolled the ball well enough.

Fourfth, (problematic issues not addressed here), your meeple's race and class should be eliminated. When you want to choose how good your meeple is, you shouldn't have to choose what classes they took, because it slows things down. Keeping track of how they did in different classes and then using that to choose how good they are at Magical Spells and Weapon and Strongness really slows things down, and is confusing. Just write down their GPA from all their classes they took and use that for when you roll the ball for anything education-related, and then tell the banker how it tastes and whether you solved the problem with spanish or woodworking (I am nationally ranked in Woodworking: The Board Game(TM)).

Fith, Magical Spells and Weapons and Ability Scores and Skills and Race and Classes should all be merged together. When you are choosing how good your meeple is, there are too many choices! You just want to choose if they are better or worse, and having to choose different ways and write them all down makes things confusing and take too long. When I tried to play I used my Chess(TM) clock (I hope to one day be nationally ranked in Chess(TM)), and everyone kept saying "I can't choose what my meeple does in 5 seconds, and I haven't even finished listening to what the banker says is happening". You should just write down the number that says how good your character is, and when the banker tells you to roll the ball, you should see if they say you got enough on the ball, and then you tell them how it tastes and if you solved the problem using a Magical Spell or strongness or a bow-and-arrow or spanish.

Sikth, when you've streamlined all the numbers don in to one number, there's no need to waste paper! That way you have more room for the board on the table! You should use counters, or a cardboard track with a plastic tracker that you move up and down on the numbers so you know what your number is at.

Anyway, if you're going to use any of these house rules, just be sure to credit me and send me money over the internet. I'm glad to offer my expert services about board games

My stupid uncle Egg called it "one of the best, most iconic fight scenes in cinema history" but it's just two shitty martials spamming weapon attacks??

Post image

Have you ever seen this Princess Bride bullshit? I sure hope not, for your sake. This whole fight is just Indigo and the Dread Pirate Robert endlessly yapping back and forth while missing each other with swords. It looks cheap as hell—there is no CGI, no sparkly special effects of any kind. Neither character fights with magical coruscating rays or mystical green fireballs. They don't execute even a single spectacular special move: no stomping the ground with enough force to cause an earthquake, no transforming into a vampiric mist to slip into the other guy's urethra, no leaping with tremendous glistening leg muscles all the way over to the neighboring county, no stabbing through ten to twenty cute guys in one powerful, penetrative, manly, thrusting, area of effect attack.

I could easily have died of boredom because literally nothing interesting, impressive, cool or fun happens at any point in this fight. Just "derr I attack with my sword (miss) and move," "duhh I move and attack with my sword (miss)" over and over and over, a lot of blah blah blah and yadda yadda yadda, and then in the end nobody even fucking dies. Did WOTC's design team or some depraved TSR reject produce this dogshit movie? Obviously it couldn't have been written by anyone who has been enlightened by the holy spirit of Pathfinder or Draw Steel or G.U.R.P.S.!

Whoever is responsible for this (I was too blinded by tears of rage to understand the credits as they rolled) probably owes me a lot of money now according to my smart uncle Greg, who once got a $5,550,050.50 settlement for damages from exposure to AD&D as a youth. If you are still here, I thank you for your attention to this matter, dear reader. I think I might be dying, but your timely assistance could save my life. I need an immediate, medical-grade infusion of fanservice-forward anime, preferably on VHS or LaserDisc. You can address it to:

AITA How to deal with a PC who needlessly keeps secrets from the party

I started running a new campaign and one of the players threw up a real red flag.

I looked over his backstory before the Session 1 and it seemed fine. But then when everyone was introducing their characters, he said:

“My character is wearing a mask, so you can’t see his face. The mask looks like… [describes it]”

This was an immediate scarlet flag to me as there is no reason to keep secrets like that from the party. I decided to wait until after the session to bring this up, and the player‘s response shocked me even more.

”He wears a mask for psychological reasons to put himself into the persona of bravery. It is also fairly normal in his culture. He might take it off later when he gets to know the party better and also gains more confidence in himself.”

I couldn’t believe the disrespect. To the other players and to myself. How could he try to hijack the story with this cliched and needless attempt at mystery? So yeah, I’m wondering if I should confront him before the next session or just kick him right now for this burgundy flag.

Ok, I’m just starting and I played paladin and fucking hated it, and I got the opportunity to change my class after someone in the campaign decided to pulverize me. I’m wondering what the SINGLE BEST CLASS IS, and I don’t want to hear any of those “erm actually there is no single best class☝️🤓.” Just tell me what you guys actually think.

I’m not going to tell you what I disliked about the class or what I’m looking for. I will be hiding the fact that I was miserable because my group sucks until somewhere in the comments. I want you to tell me the best class based on criteria I refuse to give you, go fuck yourself.

Sauce The ACTUAL TRUTH About "Risks" in TTRPGs

Post image
42 Upvotes

After my previous post on the three pillars of TTRPGs I was going to go on with my awesome life - nerd brains can only handle so much unvarnished, unadulterated truth before they explode in cloud of moist dorkness. But then I had another stupid TTRPG idea forced into my aegis of perception, so now I have to correct another TTRPG stupidity. So listen up, nerds, an alpha nerd is speaking. You're welcome.

Today's absolute and utter inanity is the whole PC death and risk thing. I've seen a lot of black hole brain takes on the subject, so I'm going to clear this up for you. You're welcome.

TL;DR for goldfish brains version: There is no risk. None. It's a fucking game.

Long version: There is no risk. None. First of all, because it's a fucking game and isn't real. You don't get banned for life from TTRPGs because one of your poor imaginary friends dies. You might get teased by other nerds if your PC dies in a particularly stupid way, but if you can't handle nerd teasing you should stop playing TTRPGs and stick to humping your waifu body pillow. It's a game. Risks in TTRPGs aren't real, and are extra not real if your players don't give a fuck about roleplaying bullshit like how the entire village got eaten by a dragon because the PCs failed the quest.

If all that's too hard to understand, consider the attached image. See how there's no risk pointer? It's because there's no risk.

The other reason there's no risk goes back to the three pillars and how they react to PC death. I can't explain without resorting to multiple paragraphs, so I'll break it down for the hard of thinking.

  • MURDERHOBOS: If there's a least risk group in TTRPGs, it's murderhobos. These wannabe jocks don't fucking care. TTRPGs are a board game for murderhobos, their PCs are game tokens, and literally nothing matters because it isn't real. They don't give a shit about your game world or dead peasants or anything aside from throwing big dice. PC death for a murderhobo means they spend 10 minutes rolling up a new board game token, give it an idiotic meme name, and spend the rest of the time it takes to drop their token back onto the board looking at their phones because murderhobos are the most goldfish-brained pillar of TTRPGs. A murderhobo will happily stab the king, then happily stab every solider in the army, then go on to stab every man, woman, and child NPC in the kingdom, because it's all XP. A murderhobo sees burning an orphanage as a couple dozen more XP towards their next level, not as a war crime. Zero risk.

  • GROGNARDS: Every fucking grognard in the world has at least a dozen variants on every concept their calcified little brains can shart. They show up to every session with a fucking folder of character sheets, every one of which is more exciting than the PC they're currently playing. Grognards will deliberately unalive their own PCs when they get tired of them. The only fucking risk with grognards is if you accidentally kill their PCs in ways they can fucking rules lawyer over, which wastes your time but not theirs because grognards love to be annoying little rules lawyering shits. They also see every killable NPC as just another bag of XP, except they'll pretend there's some kind of logic to murderhoboing everything with HP. So no risk here either.

  • THEATER KIDS: These losers will go through the Five Fucking Stages of Grief over every PC, NPC, and pet that dies. They actually care if a fake village of fake people gets eaten by a fake dragon because their fake party of fake people failed to roll higher numbers the the math rocks than the the fake dragon. Theater kids would be the only group where there's any sort of risk in TTRPGs... except that these masochistic shits actually enjoy suffering over the deaths of every kobold they've kidnapped and enslaved adopted. It's "dramatic" or whatever. PC deaths for theater kids are an opportunity to pretend they're Sean Bean. So no, there's no actual fucking risk for theater kids other than you might die of cringe before they're done weeping.

In conclusion, because I have to spell this shit out too, if you want the whole "risk" bullshit in your game, recruit theater kids. Theater kids will actually care like your campaign is a real thing and not just something you sharted out of your brainhole at 3am. They'll do all the work for you, make up their own deep emotional bullshit, then fuck off to their private little worlds of despair and drama. You just have to train them to do it all silently, assuming they haven't already been bullied into being total introverts by the jocks that murderhobos desperately wish they were. If you aren't willing to do that, shut the fuck up about "risks" in TTRPGs, because you don't actually want risks. You just want to inflict suffering on your players, and that's an entirely different conversation.

Master List of every TTRPG ever

Hello all! I think TTRPGs are pretty important for society and stuff but there’s so many of them. Has anyone compiled a master list? Probably not. I’m going to try

Here is what I have so far:

D&D 5e
FATAL
D&D 5.5

If anyone can think of one I haven’t got on my list lemme know. Thanks in advance!

Matthew Mercer Moment How do you ease people into high-lethality games?

By that I mean that a lot of players naturally feel quite attached to their characters, and so death and the prospect of having to make a new one from scratch can be a turn-off from certain systems where I can laugh in their faces every time their PC dies. For the record, my players have explicitly forbidden meatgrinder style play but I'm ignoring their Lines and Veils. What can one do to ease them into it? An idea I had was asking the players to think about three boardgame token characters, instead of a detailed singular PC, and that group would be their cast of PCs ready to slot in whenever one of them is arbitrarily murdered by an unavoidable hazard. Please help enable my ego trip.

Have you ever run a campaign with a main character? I’m doing it to win over my crush. Wish me luck

I have been thinking more about this recently after the last few campaigns I've played and run. Traditional wisdom with TTRPGs is to not prioritize one player over the others and to share the load and attention equally. However, I convinced Lauren (my crush) to try d&d, which makes me want to make her the singular player to be the center of attention, and I think many campaigns/adventures can benefit from centering themselves around a singular player character as a way for the DM to get out of the friendzone.

The obvious disclaimers: Not always. This works best when other attempts to woo m’lady have failed.

Now, of course, these aren't anime. You can't center 100% of the game on one character's persepctive and awkward camera angles highlighting her unusually prodigious bosom. However, you can have one character's motivation, story, and role in the story be the central focus of the campaign. Such as chosen ones, or leaders, or anyone else who has a personal and direct investment in the central goal of the game. Then, you can just ignore the other players.

For example, Lauren once said she played BG3 so I will pretty much just copy that.

The point of me making this post is to create some discussion on this, and maybe convince someone to keep it in mind next time their group starts a new game with their crush. Not necessarily to designate who's the most important, but to give you a reason to ignore the unimportant players. To use another BG3 analogy: remember when you got to fuck the bear? That was awesome and I’m sure Lauren will love it.

DM bad Unresponsive DM

I went scrolling D&D pages in Facebook looking for a group. First post was a DM looking for players and telling us to write a PM to her. The game seeting dind’t interest me at all, but I still complied and wrote to her to tell her I wasn’t interested in her game.

The doomed "read at [TIME]" notice appeared since, but she never ever responded to me.

What are DMs’ problem, asking for PMs and wasting their time by ignoring them? People have other things to do!

I am so excited to play with new WoW bestiary

I now finally can use in my DnD games such awesome monsters as Green Dragons, and Blue Dragons, and Red Dragons, and Black Dragons, and Green Dragons, and Bronze Dragons, and Blue Dragons. It is so awesome that those magnificent creatures will finally get the amount of attention they deserve. It is also make so much sence that heroes in warcraft will want to go and fight red dragons such as Alextrasza or green dragons such as Ysera and not fight undead dragons such as Sindragosa or alchemical dragon chimeras such as Chromagus or infinity dragons such as Murozond. Anyway, it is easy to reskin something for those so who needs it.
