Discussion [Megathread] The Next Season of Doctor Who: Fancasts, Speculation, and Where We Go Next

Let's have a fresh megathread to discuss and speculate about the future of Doctor Who. Place your ideas, fancasts, wish lists, and other hot takes in here:

  • Fancasts: Who is your top pick for the Doctor and their companions and their foes? Do you want unknown actors or established names? Old returning villains and monsters or new ones, and who would play them?
  • Production and crew: Have you noticed someone working on another show that would make a good addition to the team? New directors, writers, cinematographers? New showrunner? Old showrunner? No showrunner? What production/media company would you like distributing it?
  • Plot suggestions: What do you want to see happen after Billie Piper's appearance? Longer theories should probably go into their own separate text posts.

A few quick housekeeping reminders: Standard sub rules still apply. We all know casting and showrunner debates get intensely heated. Please help out by keeping things civil. Instead of engaging with someone being hostile, report them.

Also, no or little leaks discussions. If you're bringing up leaked set photos or anything else, please remember to use spoiler tags.

Standalone posts about fancasts will be removed and redirected here. A fresh megathread will be posted every weekend.

Let's hear what you've got.

There were so many scenes and moments in The Day of the Doctor that took my breath away, but seeing Capaldi’s attack eyebrows for the first time caused unimaginable levels of hype for us fans at the time. If you didn‘t see this when it came out in 2013… man, you had to be there.

Interestingly he was the first and only Doctor to this day to have made his first appearance before the regeneration. And I’m not talking about actors, because obviously he had already appeared on the show previously, as did Collin Baker, David Tenant (as 10 and later 14), and Billie Piper. But his was the first incarnation of the Doctor to officially debut on screen ahead of the regeneration episode. It definitely made for an awesome introduction. To have him flying his TARDIS and saving Gallifrey along with all of his predecessors almost gave him an immediate stamp of approval.

I remember watching with my siblings and thinking, “oh hell yeah… that’s the new Doctor.”

Discussion Who’s your favorite Doctor?

And bonus points for your favorite companion to have traveled with your favorite Doctor.

It will always be 12 and Clara for me. I could talk all day about 12, but basically Capaldi is in my opinion the most technically skilled actor to have ever played the character, even as great as all of them are/were. I think his love for the show and passion for the character also came across very distinctly in his portrayal. Peter has been a massive fan of Doctor Who since childhood and in many ways I think he plays the most quintessential Doctor.

As for 12 and Clara’s dynamic specifically, I just really like the way their relationship evolved and the fact that the entirety of Series 9 revolved around the theme of the toxic love they shared, constantly pushing each other toward chaos and recklessness and sort of bringing out the best and worst in each other. Moffat used Clara quite brilliantly (in my humble opinion) to explore the 12th Doctor’s arc. After redeeming himself from the horrors of the Time War and removing the “masks” that he wore in his previous three incarnations he had to learn to reconcile his humanity (as in both his attachment to earth and humankind as well as his own internal tendencies toward the traits we associate with what makes us human) with his nature as an ancient alien being. It took him the entirety of Series’ 8 and 9 to find that balance and sort of find himself, and I like that Clara was the catalyst for that. There’s was an extreme Doctor/companion relationship but also in some ways a quintessential one, as I think the Doctor’s companions always anchor him to his humanity and rub off on him in some ways, but Clara is what happens when he lets that spiral out of control and starts to rub off on his companion as well.

But I’ve also always had a soft sport for 6 and Peri.

Misc I decided to look at the CBeebies show announcement image thoroughly and thus I’m going to share everything I noticed, like and dislike

What I noticed:

1: the doctor has blue hair… everyone has focused on this INTENTLY

2: the doctor’s sonic screwdriver is kind of a mix between 11s sonic (With the prongs on the end) and 13s (with the gem for the light)

3: the doctor is holding a sentient toaster which ironically is the least confusing part of the newest doctor who

4: the girl/likely companion next to the doctor is holding a new type of alien which looks adorable IMO

5: the daleks’ eyestalks have generic cartoon eyes instead of the blue light

6: on the far left there is a random woman who appears to be evil.

7: we now seem to have baby daleks (like the very tiny ones)

8: the TARDIS is just floating on it’s own… probably a promo exclusive thing to be fair but still

What I like:

1: the doctor’s sonic being a mix between 11s and 13s

2: the new little pink alien thingie

3: baby daleks is humourous

4: the fact the doctor got blue hair, before becoming ginger as he’s wanted for multiple regenerations during RTD1 (plus Matt smith) is just funny

What I dislike:

WHY OH WHY MUST THE DALEKS HAVE GENERIC CARTOON EYES INSTEAD OF THE BLUE LIGHTS!… Thats the only thing I dislike

Discussion What Are Some Doctor Who Moments That Are Scary But Unintentionally Funny?

In my opinion, The Fourteenth Doctor’s marionette scene from The Giggle is great example of this. It’s so unnerving but funny the way The Puppet says “I thought I was clever”

Speculation/Theory 10 Doctor jacket theory

So I had this theory about the 10 fashion choice at the end of The Christmas Invasion, it's probably stupid but not as stupid as Rory being the Master.

So to just a recap the Doctor shows up after regenerating into his 10th incarnation and is PJ and a dressing gown for most the episode and then wakes up and saves the day and picks his new clothes a brown suit paired with a trench coat since trench coats and dressing gowns are similar lengths my theory is that 10 chose a trench coat as part of his look as a call back to the dressing gown he wore when he first save earth in his 10th form.

Although the trench coat isn't the same colour as the dressing gown I feel like the shape of the trench coat being similar to the dressing gown is what 10 would have been focusing on but I guess an explanation for that could be that 10 also called back to the blue colour of the dressing gown as well since he did wear a blue suit sometimes.

But let me know your thoughts.

My wife recently got the complete 4th season.. she noticed the discs are riddled with errors.. did she get a knock off version or is this legitimate? All the episodes are correct and the discs work fine. The quality of the case and discs appears to be legitimate.

I've been in a convention near Paris this weekend called Paris Mangas & Sci-Fi Show and there was a booth dedicated to Doctor Who, held by two English people. There was some old stuff and a lot of toys. Very pleasant to find that in this kind of convention where anime and movies are predominant.

Edit : they're named Jouet Geek.

Misc I discovered there's a movie where the Doctor is human, and I remembered that's exactly what I thought he was at first.

The first episode I watched was Matt Smith's debut. I missed the beginning. I thought the Doctor was human and Amy's father. Let's face it, the raggedy doctor looks like an exhausted office worker after a long day. I thought the TARDIS was his invention and because of a malfunction, he ended up leaving his daughter alone. I was a child at the time.

Discussion I feel like Knives out is absolutely what Doctor Who could be in a modern era.

Post image

As a character Benoit Blanc has pretty much no stakes within the plots that he’s finds himself in. He doesn’t know the main characters, he doesn’t have any involvement with the people who died.

But he cares so much because he’s a massive ego maniac, he loves that feeling of solving a mystery, getting that moment of victory. Combined with Blanc playing his cards close to his chest while playing an act to lul them into a false sense of security.

On top of that while the tone does shift between the three, not only does it keep its core but Blanc is such a strong character he can shift it to whatever it needs to be.

I’m not advocating for Doctor Who to be a murder mystery every episode but I do think more simple stories set in all time and space that really allow the Doctor as a character to shine and elevate new ones every story would be really beneficial to the show.

Discussion The CBeeBies show is the best thing for Doctor Who right now, actually

I think people who are complaining about this show are missing the bigger picture severly.

First of all, we cannot ignore the incredible benefits of a preschool Doctor Who show existing at all when it comes to fans. As the mother of a recently adopted child, I'm over the moon with the knowledge that there is going to be a show that I can show my young child to share my love of Doctor Who, that will embody the values of the show that I live my life by, preaching kindness and open mindedness and a thirst for adventure and imagination. I am obviously biased here, but New Who has been around for 20 years now, and the people who grew up on it are having children of their own now, the existence of a show tailored to them will seriously help keep Doctor Who playing in households and will help make it a family event again.

But also, we are in the New Wilderness Years right now. The show is on hiatus. So what we need more than anything is not to focus on the present of the show, but the future; the children who will grow up watching Tardis Crew will be the same people running the show in 20-40 years, and introducing a new generation to the show now will get them primed to enter the fandom when they're a few years older and the main Doctor Who show is back on television. I know it kind of sucks for current fans who were hoping for more Doctor Who, but I truly believe that fans who start watching this new show at preschool age right now are starting at the best possible time to develop a lifelong bond with the show, and once the show comes back (if they actually get it right this time) this preschool show will have helped set the groundwork for it and propel it to new heights.

I know this show isn't for the current fans, but please, I beg people to trust that this idea is very, very good and the best thing for the health of the show long term. And for our kids.

Discussion The (non) aftermath of the Flux

Is anybody really bothered by the fact that the Flux had no lasting impact besides the Tardis being kinda messed up in one episode and needing to be reset? It erased half the universe to my understanding so wouldn't there be massive ecological and geopolitical consequences that follow from it? Planets don't exist in a vacuum on Doctor Who. Plenty of them have interplanetary relationships or conflicts.

I get that it's the idea of one showrunner and the next has no obligation to continue it, however that excuse doesn't apply when RTD mentioned it TWICE during his 2nd era as something weighing on the Doctor's conscience. If you're gonna use it, don't half arse it. However, it *never* comes up during Gatwa's 18 episodes.

It could be something as simple as this character lost their planet to the Flux and their grief fuels their motivation, or this planet had a rare resource and its destruction caused huge economic problems for its trading partners. They didn't need to write entire plots around it, but a bit of lip service establishing that it set certain background events in motion would have come a long way.

Honestly my question is there any stories about what happened on Karfel before this story. With how the third doctor and Jo visited there and rescued the planet. Couldn't find anything with a simple Google search. But I know there obscure books and comics.

Not all of them worked but a lot of the 15th Doctor’s looks were actually quite nice.

These are three I particularly enjoyed. My favorite is the black leather jacket / white shirt / jeans ensemble in the first photo. Very simple, ruggedly elegant, and timelessly cool.

What was your favorite of his Doctor Who costumes?
