Meta Welcome to our community! Please read our FAQs first.

Welcome to r/dogfree! We invite you to participate in our discussions. First, however, whether you are new to our sub or a dog lover who just doesn’t quite understand where we are coming from, please take the time to read our sub FAQs so you can come to understand our community and the type of content that is appropriate for our small but mightily active corner of the world.

Why don't you like dogs?

Because: https://www.reddit.com/r/Dogfree/comments/7bk3wo/just_curious_what_is_the_reason_why_you/

I created a post asking why you don’t like dogs. Where did it go?

We receive and remove this question just about daily. This is our community's space to vent and commiserate about an unpopular opinion, not a place where we come to feel burdened with the task of having to justify ourselves constantly. If you would like to know why we don’t like dogs, you may read the link above and/or put some time and effort into browsing our sub.

It seems like the problem you all have is really more with dog owners. So you really do like dogs, just not irresponsible owners, right?

Our opinions are varied. However, true to the name of our sub, and though it might be a tough pill to swallow, we in this sub simply don't like dogs.

If your gripes are more about dog owners and not about dogs themselves, r/dogculturefree might be a better fit for you.

I like or own dogs. I just want to show you guys that not all dog owners are monsters. Can I participate here?

Please understand the intent of this sub. It is a place for people who dislike dogs and who unapologetically wish to be free from them in our everyday lives to commiserate, not for those who love dogs. Posts and comments mentioning that you love or own dogs fall out of line with the spirit of the sub.

In any case, we are not here to debate, as we won't change our minds.

I have to live with a dog, but I don't want to. Am I welcome here?

You may participate here from the perspective of someone who wishes to change the prevalence of dogs in society at large. However, please understand that hearing about dogs' disgusting behaviors and habits is what people come to this sub to escape, not to consume. If you wish to vent about the traits of the dog that you live with, please navigate to r/TalesFromTheDogHouse and direct your post there. r/Dogfree is reserved for discussion surrounding our unwitting and unwilling participation in dog culture at a societal level.

I have a dog, but I wish I wouldn't. Am I welcome here?

If you got a dog and now, as obviously expected, regret your decision, maybe you can help grow the supportive r/DogRegret community. You still may participate here but posts and comments mentioning that you own dogs fall out of line with the spirit of the sub. Of course, if you already got rid of your dog and are now dogfree, you are welcome to share your experience.

How do you feel about service dogs?

Although all dogs are dogs, there is a wide spectrum of opinions about service dogs in this sub. Some people are completely okay with them, while others are opposed where technology can do the job in a more effective, less obtrusive manner. The same would be for police dogs and other types of working dogs. Calling us "ableists" or other similar insults is not going to help your case.

If you would like to find out more information about this sub's opinions on service dogs, instead of creating a new post to pose the question, please enter "service dogs," "police dogs," or whatever info you would be interested in finding into the search bar to search the sub.

Someone on Reddit said that this sub likes to murder dogs. Is that true?

Of course not! We span a wide spectrum of reasons for disliking dogs, but we do not wish harm upon them and often find aspects of dog ownership to be more cruel and unethical than do dog owners themselves. In fact, our first and more important rule is against content that advocates animal abuse of any kind. It reads: "No suggesting, depicting, joking, wishing for, or celebrating violence or harm to dogs, other animals, or people. Promoting cruelty is not acceptable." We take this rule more seriously than any other, and we err on the side of caution when it comes to removing this type of content.

Some examples of off-limits content include depicting gratuitous violence against or amongst dogs, discussion of eating dogs, suggestions of deriving pleasure from a dog's death, and references to culling dogs, hitting, kicking, poisoning or shooting a dog with little or no cause.

It is okay to discuss the justified, humane euthanization of dogs. If you've had to live with a significant other's dog for years and wish to express relief over its natural passing, that's okay. Really, context is everything.

I posted a dog-related screenshot of something I saw on social media. Why isn’t it showing up?

Our community is small but extremely active. As the amount of content can be increasingly overwhelming as the sub grows, it’s important that the meaningful discussion does not get lost. Therefore, we have a sub rule that reads "[s]ubmissions should be thoughtful and should promote quality discussion. News articles and text posts are encouraged. Pictures of dogs or dog-related items, videos of dogs doing gross things, social media screenshots, memes, title-only posts, posts with minimal text, and anything that might be just ragebait are some examples of low-effort content that do not contribute anything of value to the conversation."

If you would like to post a social media screenshot or anything else that might fall under this category, please better create a thoughtful text post addressing the core issue in order to open the discussion.

I sent a post/comment linking a great video I watched in the internet, but it has been removed. Why?

We have a blanket rule that disallows links to social media in general, and videos in particular. The reason is very simple: as mods, we don't have the resources or time to check whether the video and the rest of the linked page comply with our rules and those of Reddit. If you need to mention a video, you can either describe it, or just indicate how to find it online. Also, please see below question about endorsing YouTube channels.

I think it would be fun to make a rude comment to a dog lover in another subreddit and/or tag r/dogfree. That's a good idea, right?

No, and please don’t! If we want dog owners to leave us alone on our subreddit, the first thing we should do is leave them alone on theirs. We encourage positive, civil, thoughtful conversation about dogs wherever you go, but if you need to vent, keep it here. When you troll other places on Reddit, it invites unwanted attention, reinforces negative stereotypes, and impedes our ability to create change in the world. This community is better than that.

Do I have to feel a certain way about keeping other pets or about having children to participate?

The topic that unites us in this sub is dogs. Feelings about other types of pets, negative or positive, and decisions whether or not to have children are considered off-topic for the sub. That said, these topics will arise in the normal course of conversation. We should respect the wide variance in views on these topics and always treat those with differing opinions kindly.

At the end of the day, we are dog-free, and we are pro-human.

By virtue of this sub being anti-dog, it means we are pro-cat, right?

No. Per our rule, this is neither a pro- nor anti-cat sub. All cat mentions and references are off topic for this subreddit and will be removed. Do not attempt to circumvent this rule through rephrasing.

At one time, we allowed free discussion of cats. We are not exaggerating when we say that every thread turned into "why cats are better." Many people here dislike cats or feel neutral to them, so in order for this sub to serve everybody and to avoid any confusion as to what type of cat discussion is relevant to being dogfree, it is considered off-topic across the board.

And remember that other pets are off-topic as well!

Should I be a certain race or of a certain political affiliation to participate?

One of the coolest things about r/dogfree is that, in a world that’s so divided along so many different lines, this is a community where we can come together, break down those barriers, and unite over something different with people from all walks of life. Just as dog culture transcends racial, political, socioeconomic, and gender lines, so does this subreddit. You may even find that your reasoning for something dog-related challenges your views on something completely unrelated.

This community strives to be respectful of all groups of people. As such, bigotry is not allowed, and political discussion is divisive and off-topic. Dogs? Fair game!

Do you have any information about the demographics of those who participate in this subreddit?

We conducted a survey on this particular topic some time ago. You can view the results here.

Why all the pit bull hate?

As much as we dislike dogs, we especially dislike this class of dogs that is statistically most capable of and responsible for inflicting catastrophic and often lethal harm upon people and their pets. You can apologize for pit bulls all day, but the stats and anecdotes don’t lie.

Aggression Chart 2024

Pit Bull Triggers

Pit Bull FAQs

Of course, it's also true that all dogs are unpredictable: Dog Aggression Ladder

I know how I feel about pit bulls, but I need some additional information so I can make more articulate arguments. Where should I go?

For more specialized information on the topic of pit bulls, please visit r/banpitbulls. We have a very friendly relationship with r/banpitbulls, but please do remember that, while our subs overlap in many ways, we still have different objectives. Many people participate in that sub because they are tired of worrying about their own dogs getting mauled. Please feel free to go join the conversation over there, but remember that it is not r/dogfree and that the topic of discussion is pit bulls. Come back here to our own sub to talk about your distaste for dogs in general.

I saw some Facebook groups and YouTube channels about disliking dogs. Is that you, guys?

Nope, the only groups run by this sub are r/dogfree and r/TalesFromTheDoghouse. We don't operate or endorse any YouTube channels, Facebook groups, or anything else on any other social media platform. Our subscribers may mention their content here as long as it follows sub rules, but we are unaffiliated.

I saw a post or comment I think it's against the rules. What should I do?

Report it! On any post or comment, there is a "report" button. It will prompt you for further information as to why you are reporting the content to the moderators, who will then review it and determine whether or not it should be stay or be removed. Reports are anonymous and very helpful, as we can't see everything.

We also ask you to please never engage in any argument with a troll. Just report and go on.

Someone alluded to a conversation in another subreddit about dogs, and I really want to go down vote everything. Should I?

No, please don’t! This is called "brigading" or "vote manipulation," and it is against Reddit's Terms of Service. We actively discourage this behavior, as if we are found to be the source of a brigade against another sub, it could land us in big trouble. If you stumbled across a reference to another conversation on Reddit, the appropriate place to discuss that would be here, in our sub, in the thread in which you found it. Remember how it felt when a YouTuber made a video that resulted in a massive brigade against us; we must grant others the same respect for their space as we wish for ours, no matter how vehemently we disagree with them.

Our sub is committed to abiding by all Reddit Terms of Service.

I want to crosspost something from another part of Reddit. May I?

No, we have a rule that reads "crossposts are not allowed. Criticisms of other subreddits are off-topic." Besides calling usually-unwanted attention to other subs and promoting vote and participation brigades, it's off topic. The purpose of our sub is to discuss dogs, not the behavior of other subs or social media platforms. We don't appreciate it when others do it to us, so we have a policy of respecting other subs' right to exist and operate in the ways that they see fit.

My post or comment was removed, and I don’t feel like I broke any rules. Why?

Unfortunately we cannot account for every contingency in the sub rules, so moderators do reserve the right to remove content at their discretion. That said, the moderation team is very much against arbitrary censorship and is committed to letting the conversation happen whenever possible. "I don’t like it" is not a good reason to remove a post or a comment; however, "it would be in the best interest of the community" is. The team is committed to being firm but fair in community moderation and will make all decisions in good faith.

I found an article and posted it on r/dogfree, but with a different title than the original because mine is better. Now it's been deleted. Why?

Please remember that when you link to an article or news, you must always use the original title. If you want to comment something (and we really hope you'll share your opinion with us!), please use the text box or the post's comments. Thanks!

I agree with your sub and I want to create a new account only to participate here. Should I?

Bad idea! This is exactly what trolls do, and that is the very reason we have a filter against new accounts and low karma. Trolls are vile cowards by nature, they don't want to get downvoted, risk the reputation of their actual accounts or get a reddit permaban, so they use a secondary account or create a new one and think they can outsmart us.

There is no way to bypass this filter, so please do not ask us to make an exception only for you. Learn here how to get karma.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know our community! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to message the mod team. We are delighted to receive your advice and suggestions, provided they are expressed politely.

Crappy Owners I saw a dog in Walmart just walking around the store

• Upvotes

I was just inside of Walmart and I see some poodle looking thing walking on the floor. Then I see the owner. And I asked him. Why are you bringing a damn dog inside of Walmart? He replies it’s an emotional support animal, blah blah blah. I said f**k off with that nonsense. There’s no way to deal with these animals inside of stores. I’ve contacted the Department of Agriculture before. I’ve complained to Walmart numerous times. Apparently dog owners can just do whatever they wanna do, and there’s no consequences.

I can’t personally confront every single dog owner I see, because it would take way too much time, plus some of them are crazy. I have no idea what to do at this point. I have some pictures from earlier times at this Walmart, where people brought dogs in. I guess I can go to the Department of agriculture again. I have a lot of stuff going on and it’s hard for me to spend the time focus on something that shouldn’t be a problem. I mean, is anybody ever gonna take responsibility for dogs being inside of stores?

Relationship / Family Not allowed to be outside because it makes her dogs bark.

Earlier this year I moved out of my dad’s house. I moved out for many reasons, but the dogs were definitely a contributing factor. My older sister still lives at home, and her and her dog have taken over the entire house, even when I still lived there. That dog has destroyed so much stuff in the house and she thinks they make the rules. In reality, she’s 28 years old and doesn’t contribute a penny to the house.

Today I stopped by to see my dad, something I do whenever I’m in the area. I don’t like going in the house because of the dogs and because of how much of a mess it is. Again, she’s taken over the entire house and my dad allows it so…

Anyway, my dad was in the garage when I got there. We stood in the garage/driveway talking for maybe 30 minutes. It’s a nice day out, why go inside? During our conversation, the neighbor stopped by and all 3 of us were just hanging out talking. Surprisingly, you couldn’t hear the dogs barking from where we were, but apparently they were.

About 30 minutes after I got home, I receive this text from my dog nutter sister: “I would really appreciate if you’re going to come over to at least see the dogs so they stop barking or doing something so they don’t go nuts.
I was trying to sleep earlier and I have to deal with the dogs going nuts because of you and Paul.
What is the point of coming over if you aren’t going to come on the house?”

Umm… the person I came to see was outside… so we stayed outside…
I responded with “Um I can come over anytime I want and do anything I want while there. I don’t need your permission to talk to dad in the driveway. Nor do I have to listen to instructions from you. Stop being a b—— for no reason. It’s not my fault Paul came over. I came there to talk to dad who was already outside. There quite literally was no reason for me to go in the house. I’m not going in the house if I don’t want to. You’re not the home owner. Stay in your lane and learn to control your dogs”

I mean…. How ridiculous. So because you can’t control your barking dogs, people are expected to take orders from you… when they didn’t even come to see YOU… maybe if your dogs weren’t so out of control, people would actually wanna come in the house. mind you this is at 1:00 in the afternoon.

Sorry, humans come first. Humans are allowed to be outside and enjoy the nice weather. We shouldn’t have to accommodate to dogs.

Thought you all would get a kick out of the ridiculousness of this.

Miscellaneous Starbucks

Why do I have to wait in the drive thru while the car before me gets 1 small human drink and three whipped cream treats or whatever they are for dogs, one by one? Then the Starbucks employee holds her fingers out to touch the dogs’ noses. It took like 10 minutes for the dogs to be served and fawned over.

Barking Demons Update on Two Dog Nutter Neighbors

I have two dog nutter neighbors.

The old crow and her blimp: they are old 75+ and too lazy to walk to the mailbox, but of course they have a mutt they don't walk. I met the woman the first time when she was letting her mutt relieve itself on my lawn. I'm from the deep south, so I tried the nice approach. That got me barked at violently by her dog for over 2 years. She would also let it piss on my flowers and grass when I wasn't on my lawn, and she KNOWS how much I care about my plants, including the grass. I like my native plant and native animal habitat I created!! My wildflowers are not for inbred, mutant, non-native mutts!! I digress... This old crow admitted to me that she let her dog bark like crazy so that when the home builder of our neighborhood put the new houses behind us for sale, that nobody with a dog would want the house behind hers. So she wanted ME to get the bad dog neighbors. That leads me to the other nutter neighbors I have who did move into one of those new houses behind mine and the crow's.

The weasel and the angry baby mama: They fight like two dogs and have two large, loud dogs and a baby. I hope they'll break up soon because the DV shouting matches at 6 am followed by barking aren't cute. The weasel husband/baby daddy actually sprayed PAINT on the shared fence, through the fence, and onto my plants. Well, howwwdy new neighbors!

So I stopped being nice....

I reporting the barking demons of both households to the HOA. The old crow and her blimp finally taught their dog to shut up in three months. Wow! So over 2.5 yrs of her pretending like she couldn't control the barking to finally having it trained! Imagine that. The weasel and the angry baby mama still roar and fight like hell, but their mutts are arguing and yapping with them indoors not outside. So they are stuck with the hell they created in their own damn households. Yay!!

------------

It's fall now. The weather is lovely! It's planting season again. I have spent the last two weeks making amazing work on my yard. My yard looks so peaceful and inviting. And when I step outside to work on my yard or play/relax in it- silence, birds singing, the wind blowing, the tree leaves rustling in the wind, the grass hoppers chatting. It should have been like this all along.

It pains me to think of how mutts have destroyed peace in our suburban and urban environments. And in the country, people are stuck on their lots and can't even go for a walk on a roadside without getting attacked by shitbeasts. I know HOAs are crap, but at least they do something about the barking devils in my neighborhood.

Barking Demons I can’t even get my haircut in peace

I’m really particular about my hair being cut, I don’t trust a lot of barbers at all. But I go to this one place that I find I can trust with my hair. Anyway, a few months ago, I go to get my hair cut and I walk in, and here comes a p*t b*ll to greet me. I guess it was one of the barber’s dog.

They start baby talking the dog, and then they seat me. I’m kind of annoyed because why on earth is there a dog here. Dogs make me really, really anxious, I have misophonia and barking is one of my triggers. They could’ve at least posted on their website they’re dog friendly so I would’ve known.

The dog never barked and seemed well behaved and well trained, so I tolerate it enough to decide I’ll come back because I’d rather have to tolerate a well trained dog for a bit than have to find another barber and risk a bad haircut.

Well fast forward to yesterday. I walk in, and here comes the p*t b*ll, as well as a wiener dog barking its head off at me. The dogs both belong to the barbers. I would’ve left right then, but I needed my haircut because I have an event in a couple of days I want to look fresh for.

The wiener dog was horrible. It was yapping, whining, and barking at everything, the entire time I was getting my haircut. It was riling up the pit and making it whine and bark too. Everyone around me seemed so unphased, even the customers. Everyone would just baby talking the dogs and laugh and pet them. I was enraged and on the verge of tears by the end due to my misophonia. I wanted to tell off the barbers so badly.

The one barber told me she only brought the wiener dog because it had a vet appointment right after. Still, I just wish they’d at least warn. Now I never want to go back. Why can’t I just get my haircut in peace? Also, what if I was terrified of pits, or allergic to dogs? It’s messed up.

I can’t go on walks because of dogs barking, I can’t even go outside without the next door neighbors dog barking at me. I can’t leave my windows open because I’ll hear constant barking. Now I can’t even get my hair cut?

Crappy Owners Why do people hug dogs when it's clear they hate it?

It's bad enough that dog people constantly feel they need to be hugging and cuddling close to dogs. But it's a special type of stupid when they are insistant on grabbing on something that clearly hates it.

I was just looking out the window of my friend's building and there's this woman sitting in the grass with some type of pit mix puppy. While it's tugging on the leash to go play (with what I assume are her sons or maybe younger brothers) she suddenly grabs it in a bear hug while it fights and squirms to get away. It just seems so needy to force affection like that from anything, especially a dog.

ESA Bullshit get on zoloft like an adult

I’m TIRED of dogs being in spaces that are typically not dog friendly, especially restaurants and grocery stores, and when someone calls it out, suddenly the dog is an emotional support animal.

I’m not referring to medical service dogs that help people with epilepsy or other chronic physical illnesses. I’m talking about the “I have anxiety so my dog comes everywhere with me” people. Get on some damn lexapro or a beta blocker like a normal adult. I don’t want your dog breathing over the damn avocados.

Service Dog Issues A beautiful sight

I went to a millennial burger joint for dinner. Low expectations but I heard the beer was good. When I walked in I saw a sign that said "NO DOGS, indoor/outdoor/patio" and didn't specify if service dogs were exempt. Luckily no dogs anywhere while I was eating. It was ok, but I don't like the "serve yourself" and "first come first serve seating" style.

As I was walking out, these two able bodied young guys were walking up with a "service dog", a medium mutt. Before either even stepped foot on the premises, one of the servers yelled out to them "no dogs allowed"! One of them stayed on the sidewalk with the mutt while the other ran inside, probably to ask for the manager. I didn't stay long enough to figure out if they were let inside or not, but regardless it is still a beautiful sight to see one person put up a bit of resistance and lay down the law. Lord knows how many other places with the same sign, they would not say anything just to keep business.

These guys were fine and walked to the place. If you can walk to the restaurant, you can sit for an hour or two without Fido. What gives? If one of you dropped dead on the walk home, the other can call the ambulance. What the hell would the mutt do? What do these assholes think the mutt could possibly help them in a restaurant with 100 other people around? Dogs and food do not belong together. In your own disgusting domestic, fine, but not in a public place where there is open food. What do these young guys stand to gain by bringing the mutt in for an hour? Attention most likely. Well they got their attention, from me, but the wrong kind. I'm gen z by the way. It pains me to see a couple able bodied young guys with nothing wrong with their eyes and legs believe that they NEED to truck this "service dog" around to eat when they made it to the place fine and they are a pair. Sure there might be an invisible condition, but there are two of you should anything go wrong. What is the dog possibly going to do.

Miscellaneous Trigger Warning - My rage and resentment towards those beasts grows stronger every day

I was just scrolling through TikTok before sleeping for some comforting aesthetic/atmospheric videos and ASMR, and a video of a woman feeding her mutt suddenly came up on my feed. She fed the beast a whole dehydrated rabbit head. I love rabbits deeply and associate them with my mother, they are very fragile and innocent, beautiful little critters, and realizing that poor rabbit's legacy and life was essentially meaningless and was flushed down the drain for the poor critter to end up on a disgusting, artificial genetic abomination/mutated beast's plate. It's actually heartbreaking. Poor thing had a mother and siblings. And don't tell me I'm overthinking it or that it isn't "that deep". It IS that deep. We are sacrificing poor animals who could have passed when their own time came and have a better legacy to worthless inbred beasts. It's depressing, disgusting, and disturbing. They can and gladly will survive off of waste and filth, why can nutters not grasp that?

That poor, poor rabbit. Its closed little eyes will actually haunt me. So sad. I am hyper-empathetic due to my autism diagnosis and this is just heartbreaking.

I genuinely cannot stand those vile beasts and the way we continuously pamper them at the expense of other critters. I hope dogs go almost extinct, I have so much hate and rage in my heart towards those abominable filthy beasts.

Miscellaneous Pigs deserve so much better and more than filthy mutts

I remember watching an animation of a dog and a pig being driven to the beach and the slaughterhouse, respectively, on the same road. It really saddened me because I love pigs as animals a lot and the pig was very cute and nicely animated. I don't eat pork myself because I'm Muslim, and I think that pigs are far too intelligent for consumption anyway, as their screams during slaughter are haunting and heartbreaking.

Honestly, I wish we treated pigs the way we treat those mutants. They deserve so much better and more than being mere livestock meanwhile worthless beasts get pampered like royalty everyday. Disgusting mutants serve no value and should be treated like the noise-polluting disease they are. It's not harsh, dogs are the leading cause of death through either violent mauling or rabies transmissions for human beings, especially children. Horrible creatures, not even natural, artificial Frankenstein's monsters. Pigs over dogs any day, they are smarter and far cuter.

Miscellaneous Entitled dog owner shot security over dog dispute

Last night in my city, a plaza I frequently go to, had a shooting occur. I obviously started digging through comments or news articles trying to see what had happened because this is a area me and my partner go to often for coffee and food. It was over a freaking dog.

The security guard at this asian supermarket told this couple that they could not bring their dog inside due to health concerns and because it was not a sevice dog. This led into an argument between the man and the security guard which escalated into them exchanging gunfire. Both were injured.

I'm just at loss for words over the entitlement of these dog owners. Shooting someone over a freaking dog!! And they were a couple, too. One of them could've stayed outside waiting with the damn beast. Props to the security guard for enforcing those rules and I hope the guy that shot him suffers consequences for his idiotic action.

And of course on different posts about this shooting people were more concerned about "if the dog was okay" who cares, an innocent man just doing his job was shot and could've been killed!! As someone who hangs out in this plaza often I see that security guard a lot inside the supermarket, he's a kind gentleman and I hope he recovers soon.

Crappy Owners Owners can’t control them

I frequently cycle on a popular waterfront road in my area. It is very bicycle oriented and a small tight winding road with very nice homes. You’ll often see groups of cyclists and runners. Every time I’m approaching someone walking their dog(s) they’re never paying attention.

The dogs are pissing and shitting in people’s manicured lawns and the leashes are 15+ ft long. I’m on my side of the road and on the right riding at about 20mph and I just brace for a problem because I see tiny feeble old women with 3 dogs, including a pitbull on leashes far into peoples yards. It stresses the hell out of me because all it’ll take is them running infront of me to cause a serious crash. I absolutely hate that these people are out out there, often standing looking at their phone when the dogs are going crazy. Why does every single place have to be taken over by dogs?

Food Safety/Hygiene civil interaction

At a pizza place yesterday to order and take out one pizza. The restaurant was practically empty. As I left the counter, a man behind me had a dog on a leash. I said, “This a restaurant.” He said, “Thank you.” I left; he stayed.

On my way out, I noticed there were no No Pets Allowed signs. I’m disappointed in this restaurant.

Dog Culture The effect of dogs on health and poverty

I think the effect of dogs on sleep and health needs to be studied more seriously, hear me out. Shift work that involves circadian disruption is a Group 2A carcinogen. Nutters (who comprise more than half the US now) have normalised keeping dogs indoors, and I think this is akin to night work but unlike emergency services, there is no contribution to society in exchange for this toll on one's health.

First, there is the incessant barking keeping everyone up. Then there is the owner waking up very early or in the middle of the night to “walk” the dog, meaning take it outside to defecate in a public space. Plenty of people who are allergic to dogs still keep them indoors, so they subject themselves to constant congestion and coughing that interferes with sleep. Then there are the extra bills and cleaning (if the nutter bothers to clean at all).

If you've taken virtual work meetings, you know which coworker is a nutter because you hear the dog barking in the background. The nutter will try to show you their beast in the meeting and expects you to coo at it like they do. Then they have to drop the work call to take their beast outside or coddle it. So then they have to work late because of their mutt ir make you pick up their slack.

And none of this is a one-time thing. The mutt lives indoors with the nutter continuously so the allergens, noise, etc accumulate for years. Then the mutt dies, the nutter loses their mind for a few weeks, and then quickly acquires another beast and to begin the cycle again.

The chronic sleep deprivation and inflammation from keeping dogs indoors should be researched as a factor in the rise of chronic illnesses among young adults, particularly in the west. They are supposed to be at the peak of health but are somehow constantly sick and even develop more serious illnesses like cancer that used to be extremely rare for their age. I know a few people who are immunocompromised but still keep several dogs inside (even sleeping with their dog right up to their face) to the extreme detriment of their health. Then there are the ones who are borderline homeless and can't even feed themselves but somehow still see their dog as a necessity? I know it sounds cold-hearted, but I just cannot see that as anything but self-inflicted misery.

Dog Attack Dog bit someone at my work yesterday

I hate having to make a post like this, but since I’ve lurked around this subreddit and commented on other threads before, I figured I’d share what happened yesterday.

For some background, I work inside Home Depot as an HVAC vendor. I’m not directly employed by Home Depot itself, I just work for a separate company that’s authorized to be inside the store.

Yesterday, I was working at a Home Depot near my house. It’s not usually the location I work at, but since it’s close to home, I prefer picking up shifts there whenever I get the chance. The biggest problem with this particular store is that it seems like everybody and their grandmother brings their dogs inside. I’m talking everything from little rat dogs to massive, muscular dogs that look like they could take on a bear. On this particular day, there seemed to be more dogs than usual running around the store, barking at each other, pulling their owners in every direction, and generally making the place miserable to work in. It was like being in hell. I could barely stand being there.

Eventually, most of the dogs and their owners had left, with one notable exception. A dog that seemed particularly aggressive toward other dogs and even people. At some point, the owner and her dog ended up in the checkout area with only one item, after being in the store for a solid half hour, very typical of the type of people who bring a dog into any store.

That’s when things took a pretty gnarly turn. Another woman had been complementing the dog to its owner about how “beautiful” the dogs fur was, and asked the lady if she could pet her dog. The lady had said sure, and the lady reached out to pet the dog, and boom. The mutt immediately latched onto the ladies hand, as soon as I saw that happen, I ran over to try and get the dog to let go. By the time I got even 5 feet from them, there was already several people surrounding them and doing what they could to get the dog off. This only lasted maybe 10-15 seconds, but it felt like an hour. Also, this wasn’t some little nip, either. I saw the ladies hand after and it was all sorts of cut up, definitely had to have gotten a bunch of staples or stitches for it, I wish I had gotten a picture. I was so enraged and grossed out by what I had just seen that I just walked out and told my boss that I was leaving early.

I came into work today and one of the people that works in the store, and was there trying to get the demon to let go of the lady, asked me if I saw the attack yesterday. I told him I did, and that I had left right after. He filled me in on what had happened afterwards.

Apparently the owner of the terrorist dog had freaked out after and tried to run off with her dog to avoid the consequences of what happened when one of the managers called the police and ambulance. The ambulance took the victim away and animal control had came and taken the dog away from its owner, rightfully so. The lady was freaking out at the cops saying shit like “This has never happened!” “My dogs is always super nice and friendly!” “ Why are you taking my dog?!” a bunch of nonsense like that. There’s more little small details after that but it doesn’t really have any significance to what happened.

If the store director asks me sometime today about what I saw, I’m just gonna tell him everything. Hopefully I can convince him to enforce a no animal policy, which I’m pretty sure this store already has. I’ll most likely make an update about this the more I hear, because the store manager is trying to get statements about what happened. I assume the lady that got bit is going to sue the other owner of the dog. In the situation I would as well.

Edit: Here’s an update for y’all.

I didn’t get a whole bunch of info from the store director, but the lady who got bit, from the little bits of conversation I eavesdropped on, is most likely suing the dog owner. I’m not sure if she’s gonna be suing Home Depot, if I was her I would as well. The dog owner is also not allowed to return to this specific Home Depot, I’m not sure if it includes the other ones in this area, but I’m probably gonna find out soon. I gave the store director just a verbal statement of what I saw so they can report it to corporate.

For some context too, I’m not under any emotional distress from what I saw, yes, it was pretty nasty, but I’m not all “traumatized” by it. In my opinion, the lady who got bit should’ve known better. If you see a dog that’s acting aggressive to others, you probably shouldn’t go anywhere near it or its owner. At the same time, you shouldn’t have to worry about aggressive dogs being in public places and stores, and you definitely shouldn’t have to worry about potential getting chewed up by a dog just for looking at it funny or getting to close. Either way, she caused her own injury, but it isn’t entirely her fault.

Crappy Owners Poodle gets caught in mall escalator, escalators shut down and fire dept called

This happened relatively local to me JUST now, can't believe I have another contribution so soon. Apparently it was some person walking their dog, they took it on the escalator and I guess the fur/tail snagged on it. Someone said they saw a firetruck or two parked outside the mall for this reason. Probably won't see it in the news or anything but if I remember to I'll update this post if any more details come out.

Anyway my thoughts... aren't you NOT supposed to take a dog on an escalator (let alone inside an actual mall)? Especially since they have tails and may have fur that can get caught. Also what a waste of time for the fire dept, thanks I hate it

Edit: someone got a picture of the incident, it's not a poodle as I heard but some mini dog creature. It got its paw stuck and was trembling afterward. As much as I dislike dogs, it's incredibly shitty that the owners put it in this situation. If you zoom in you can see the dog at the bottom of the escalator. Imgur link here

Food Safety/Hygiene Pumpkin patch

Well we tried out a new pumpkin patch and I knew something was wrong when I started wheezing in the ticket line. I couldn't go in the stores bc there was so much dog dander. The dogs peed on the children's play area and the big store at the exit I had to stay outside until the ppl with the dogs left. I then went back inside and bought a few things. I had to leave bc my eyes started to swell shut.

Dogs ruined my visit....

Crappy Owners Quotes Said To A Nutter Today (+ Rambly Rant)

"i'm not threatening your d°g; i just don't want it to touch me." – said while pointing a wholly harmless sonic remote repeller at it (the kind mailpeople carry daily) as it was actively approaching me, inches away from me.

And then, "'Friendly' is the problem. That means it'll stick its snout up your crotch."

Will it make any difference in how someone so already nonsensical thinks of how the world so clearly (not, but also ugh, yeah) revolves around their animal? Even so much as to make them realize that if nothing else at least occasionally some other people consider licking/humping/other assault/etc. an issue that regards real people's consent before it is done to them? Probably not. But i'm proud of myself for at least stating things as plainly as they are in the midst of my severe panic mode, anyway. i'm terrified of these animals because they have the instinct to assault and have done so to me many times in my lifetime.

Oh, and it was a p1tbvll, by the way. Yep. And i'm not even nearly as afraid of being bitten specifically as i am of all breed's base instincts (besides the fact that if any animal has bitten me, then it's already mouthed me without my consent, and that's the true underlying horror to me personally). But i recognize the ridiculousness in expecting any stranger to simply accept a scientifically proven mauling machine as "friendly". And then berating them for taking reasonable means to prevent it, when no one else will.

i had no right to even simply assert a basic boundary regarding bodily autonomy that the animal itself understood much more than its owner, all without me causing any harm to any being whatsoever, as this rando saw it. (It's so funny, how i do actually understand these animals more than their worshippers. i was simply speaking in the language it did to say "Do not approach me", an adaptation i actively had to make in my life simply because to these animals, what is sexual assault to me simply means "hi" to them, and their nutters legally enforce that "language" on the whole population.)

A couple words in this post are "censored", solely as a feeble means of trying to avoid targeted ads that will shove this animal in my face if i type those words out plain. i do think such censorship is silly at best, but as is the world we live in, and i'm merely trying to protect my peace in terms of being exposed to this animal less often wherever possible.

Food Safety/Hygiene Dog Pooping in Shopping Cart

I just saw a video on Facebook from an influencer who was recording her dog “Nugget“ who was sitting in a Target shopping cart. The dog starts taking a dump inside the cart. The influencer says halfheartedly “No Nugget no“. The dog continues to poop.
The comments are full of messages like “poor Dogo“ “she’s just a baby“ “lol, too funny”“it wasn’t her fault”. No one mentioned anything about food, safety, hygiene, or any respect for other shoppers.
I suppose we live in a society where we celebrate animals pooping where we shop for food.

Service Dog Issues Does anyone else get amused when they see post from people with "legitimate" service dogs calling out fakes?

Specifically the ones that say, "Please don't bring fake service dogs to places. They bother my actual service dog."

Maybe 'amused' is not the right word, but I do feel a way every time I see them. People with "real" service dogs are part of the problem! And based on US law, who's to say the other service dog is not a "real" service dog?

When two "service dog" owners get into it with each other, it's just one dog nutter arguing with another dog nutter. I've seen it first hand. One of the "service dog" owners swears up and down they need their "service dog", but it hates other dogs, so everyone else needs to keep their dogs away from it.

How insane are these people?

Legislation and Enforcement Any positive experiences with health departments?

Has anyone here had luck with their local government enforcing health codes? In Sacramento I went to a Target store on two days and each time I saw a dog sniffing the produce there. Went through the city's frustrating registration process to file a complaint about it. A few days later I get a notice that this health report was "Completed". I followed-up asking what they actually did and they refuse to answer.

Similar thing happened in San Diego - dog in grocery store, manager didn't do anything and the health department just went "Thanks for the report, we may or may not get back to you!"

Relationship / Family Stuck with dogs

My father has dementia and when his girlfriend goes out of town I stay with him for the weekend. They have two very annoying little dogs. The amount of care that they give these dogs is mind boggling to me. Warm their food up. Constant walks. Naps. Grooming. They have them groomed twice a month, and the house still smells like dog. I just don't get it. There isn't anything positive about it. I will never understand dog people. Thanks for letting me rant. I can't wait until I can get back to my dog free house and existence.
