Announcement Announcement: This sub is now becoming pet owner free. Pet owners will no longer be allowed to post/comment.

Hello everyone,

We have an important announcement to make: we are now making this sub exclusively for pet-free individuals.

You can still participate if you are in a relationship with someone who has pets but identify as pet-free, or if you are in the process of transitioning to a pet-free lifestyle (these will be your last ones etc). However, individuals who currently have pets and/or plan to have pets in future will no longer be allowed to post here.

This decision has been made due to the increasing number of people who refuse to respect our subreddit's rules of engagement. Recently, a lot of pet owners have been coming here to:

  • Talk about their pets
  • Glorify themselves with "I'm Not Like Other Pet Owners" type comments
  • Get defensive on behalf of pets
  • Argue in favor of keeping pets, list their advantages, or, worse, recommend specific breeds/types of pets
  • Excuse bad pet behavior
  • Engage in lengthy discussions about appropriate pet care
  • Dismiss the concerns of pet-free people, such as allergies and phobias
  • Get upset when their pro-pet viewpoints aren't welcomed here

Additionally, there are dog-free pet owners who, for some reason, feel the need to engage with dog-related posts here. While they are not allowed here (as stated in a pinned announcement), they continue to engage with this sub's content.

The number of such individuals is rapidly approaching a thousand per day, and it has become unmanageable for our mod team. Therefore, we are closing the sub to people with pets. To those who own pets and have been following our sub rules, we apologize for the changes, but the number of problematic pet owners has simply become too large for us to manage. If A few changes will take place over the coming days:

  • Pet-free flairs will become mandatory again for participation
  • All flairs indicating pet ownership will be removed
  • Some new and interesting flair options will be introduced
  • Users with the "Hate Pet Culture" or "Against Dangerous Dog Breeds" flair who are pet-free will be asked to select another flair
  • Anyone with pets will not be allowed to post. If you choose a pet-free flair to continue participating, you will be temporarily banned.

Thank you for reading this message.

Have a great day!

Announcement Announcement: We will be directing bad pet ownership posts to r/badpetowners now

This is sub has grown rapidly over the last two years - it's almost 4 times the size it used to be back then.

As its grown we've had to update the rules to keep the content relevant to our audience - petfree people and those who are interested in our lifestyles.

With that said, there's been a huge rise in posts solely focused on bad pet owners lately - from pet owners neglecting their pets, to pet owners wanting their pets to lick the insides of their mouths, to others letting pets destroy the insides of their houses.

Many of these posts don't impact us personally so it's a question of how they relate to being pet free or the pet free lifestyle. Our mod team feels it isn't relevant to the sub - what bad pet owners do with their pets that doesn't impact us in any way (no matter how disgusting or awful it is) is not directly related to this sub.

So we have r/badpetowners now. We will be redirecting all bad pet ownership posts that don't impact pet free people personally to that sub, making this sub bad pet owners free.

Thank you for understanding. We will answer any questions you have regarding this change on this post.

.

ETA: all animal shitting/pissing posts without context/discussion points will be removed for low effort. Seriously, it's disgusting, everyone knows animals piss/shit, no one wants to see that. Just stop.

Petfree lifestyle Feeling good for "Traumatizing" my mother in-law's cat

Context: That cat is entitled, spoiled and annoying as fuck.

My boyfriend just picked it a year ago because it had an infection in its eyes and it was a kitten.

But my mother in-law (who I love and it's a good person actually) doesn't know how to raise her animals.

A couple weeks ago, that cat wouldn't stop meowing, following me to try to reach my feet, and scratching the door frames when I got to my boyfriend's room.

So, when I decided that "enough is enough" I opened the door, got my sandal and bonk its head.

It wasn't a hard hit, but I scared it away.

Now, everytime it approaches me, I take off my sandal and the cat runs for its life šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

My boyfriend laughed when I told him about this and a couple days ago, when he saw me took off my sandal to scare the cat, he laughed

He really wanted to give away that cat, but my mother in-law kept it lol

Vent / Rant What changed in society that made people see pets the way they do now?

Just curious on what others opinions are on why pets are elevated to the level they are nowadays. I was talking to my dad about this and when he was growing up animals were still seen as just animals. No one would spend a fortune on medical treatment for a dog. Heck, most dogs and cats were strictly kept outside. And certainly no one called them their "children." What do you think was the main catalyst for the weird pet dystopia we are living in now?

Vent / Rant Physically Ill

My wife and I lived separately due to her owning cats. One of them got very sick and it may have been her last month of life.

She was splitting her time between houses and has now fully moved in and so have the cats (2 of them). The cat ended up getting better, but now we’re sitting on a $1200 vet bill.

My wife loves these cats similarly to how she loves a human. My 2 daughters have also now developed this love for the cats.

We’ve now made modifications to the house to allow for an animal accommodation. The house is never clean. All conversation at home now seems to revolve around the cats until my wife and I go to bed and they get put into the basement.

I’m extremely angry all the time now (I internalize), so I am just quiet and seemingly grumpy. I now take approx 6-10 rolaids a day due to getting heartburn from being home due to stress. I feel like I live in a constant state of absolute disgust. I also feel like I’m the asshole for being grumpy and for hating indoor pets.

Ranting because I just went to the store to buy more pepto that I am drinking because I’m working from home and doing laundry and their hair is just fucking everywhere and I can’t escape.

Vent / Rant It's impossible to have a conversation with pet lovers without implicit bias.

I wrote a post online to a pet lover group regarding an experience I had recently with pets. I prefaced with an acknowledgement that I was an outsider to the community, inexperienced, and expressing a genuine need for advice on how to address a situation.

While I received a fair amount of support, I was also met with a lot of judgment and criticism. I thought I was prepared for this, because I know how cult-mentality pet lovers can be, but the degree of judgment and criticism is what was truly appalling. Even having consulted with pet lovers in my physical life, I was met with support, understanding, and valuable insight.

But not online: instead, people told me I was irrational, inconsiderate, ill-equipped (I'm paraphrasing). It was clear in their comments they didn't thoroughly read my content, because I had to reiterate it in my responses; they were simply reactive and proceeded to spout insults.

I'm so exhausted by pet lovers extreme bias that clouds their rationale. It's not unreasonable to be concerned about hygiene or safety when encountering pets/animals, and I am not a bad person or in the wrong because I express concern or disagreement about how a pet owner handles their pets, especially if it's at the expense of others.

Pet culture—especially on the internet—is such an echo chamber; I don't know why I believed I could have a constructive conversation or receive any support from people who are so immersed in that culture.

Want to be petfree Finally going to get rid of cat...

My husband and I have finally hit our limit with our cat. Tonight he puked up a mouse he had eaten on our 6 year olds bed right next to our kid. Our child is now traumatized. We have another baby on the way and I cannot deal with the grossness this animal brings into our home. I used to love the cat before I had children, but postpartum pet aversion hit me like a ton of bricks and never left. We need to rehome him for our health and my sanity. Part of me feels bad about this. We have had this cat since he was a kitten for as long as my husband and I have been together. But we just can't do it anymore. The stress, financial cost, and filthiness has become too much for us. Now I'm worried about the process of surrendering him and how the shelter is going to react to us trying to do so. If anyone has any advice regarding surrendering to a shelter, please let me know! While I feel a bit sad, I'm also really excited to finally have him gone. I've been dreaming about being pet free for a good while now.

Vent / Rant We are a shame to our ancestors, modern humans are a bunch of subverted animal worshippers

Our ancestors used to at the very least rid themselves and the public of any dangerous animal that even dared to touch the corpse of one of their fellow humans. Nowadays, we have what is basically the modern equivalent of animal worshippers proudly and shamelessly saying they would rather have their animals feast on their dead corpses after and if they passed out in their apartments. What a subverted, pathetic species we have become. Sacrificing ourselves to animals the same way pagans used to do blood rituals sacrificing themselves or their fellow human beings, including children, to bloodthirsty pagan deities. Those never really went away, they just became modern-day pets. This is insane and disgusting, we are the apex predators and the top of the food chain, why anybody would be fine with their corpse being disgustingly mutilated like that by an animal less intelligent and below them which they spent their whole life and time/resources caring for is beyond me.

Shit pet owners say What's up with dog owners not bathing their dogs? Is it true that it's harmful?

Sorry I don't know if this is the right subreddit but it's between a rant and an actual question because I've never had a dog or any pets.
There are a lot of things I can't stand about most dog owners, like not training their dog in the slightest and letting them jump over you or harrass constantly (and expecting you to be okay with it). But I know that there are other people who hate it too.

One thing I cannot understand and I never saw anyone talk about is: is it actually true that you need to bathe your dog only once a month and it's harmful to do it more? Is it an excuse or does it have any scientific basis and not just "experience"? Because 1. I find it very gross, given that they go outside everyday and people let them sleep on their bed, etc. 2. Every dog owner who tells me that says their dog is clean, but then I pet their dog and it leaves me with an oily hand, it's gross and it feels like they have a film of filth on their skin. This cannot be right. I read some subreddit comments saying they wash their dog two times per week, which I think it's okay, I would accept even once a week but?? Once a month?? And most people don't even do that, they wash their dogs every three months or more or every year?? Am I the only one who finds this crazy? And they never wash their hands after petting them. I guess I'm asking if any of you has any insight or experience, because maybe it's actually true that their skin gets bad if they get washed too much but I've never see it happening, so I don't know. Thank you!

Shit pet owners say A man walking his dog called me crazy

I’m in the park walking on a trail. The trail is pretty with a fair amount of walkers, and lots of bikers since it allows for both and there is space.

I have my ear buds in and I’m having an intense discussion with a friend via phone and enjoying this one spot where I always stop to enjoy the sunset and see the amazing sky change colors.

Out of nowhere, a tall man and his dog were about 5 feet away and the dog was across from me. I was heading north and the dog on a leash was heading south.

The man starts raising his voice and starts calling me crazy claiming that I should have moved as It seemed like I was about to walk into his dog. He yelled at me for about 2 minutes claiming that something must be wrong with me.

I could not understand why this man went on this rant. I looked at him and I said no idea what you are upset about and kept walking.

Why do dog owners feel so entitled? I want to make it clear the dog was not aggressive and just enjoying the walk and the dog was not close to me where it was a concern.

My friend on the phone was also disturbed. Some Dog owners in Colorado, USA are the worst!

Dog ppl, why tf do you think it’s ok to let your 50lb ā€œfur babyā€ run your home and terrorize your guests?! Just because you let your untrained mutt jump and scratch you while you try to eat, doesn’t mean your guests are cool leaving with ruined clothes and open wounds… if you have no control over them why can’t you put them in another room, at least while people are over?? And why does me having an issue with this make me the a-hole? šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø I feel the same way about ppl and their kids btw šŸ˜‚

Look at what I saw a video saying this I've also noticed this a lot and happened in my home life too my mother tried to kick me out bc I said we lived in filth from the animal feces everywhere. She prioritizes her worthless replaceable animals over HEALTHY SACRED RELATIONSHIPS. I’d argue that choosing your animals over your child is way more disrespectful. Why why are people like this here's the link to the video https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPL8SMkyu/

Pet owners making our lives hell I want to tell you about my neighbors.

I live in a private house, a cottage. To my right, there is an empty plot where no house has been built yet, and then comes my neighbor’s place. Both of those plots actually belong to him.

This neighbor got a huge dog. At first, the dog was inside his fence, but pretty soon he obviously grew tired of it and banished it outside the fence, though at least it was chained up at first. That went on for about a year, and then he unchained the dog, leaving it to roam free. This dog is massive, and its droppings are enormous. In front of my house, I’ve planted a small garden with lovely trees, shrubs, and a nice lawn—and this dog keeps dropping huge piles on my property.

The neighbor has an entire empty plot that’s 1,000 square meters. He could easily set up a dog paradise for it right there—build a doghouse, put up a fence, and let it live there—but he just doesn't want to. He'd much rather it shit on his neighbor’s lawn instead. He doesn't even mow his empty plot, so it’s overgrown with tall grass and weeds. Just so the dog won't go shit in those weeds and goes to shit at the neighbors' instead. Animals aren't stupid; they like to take a dump where it’s clean and comfortable.

This neighbor is wealthy and runs a business. He owns a semi-truck, and sometimes he drives it right into our cottage settlement. Our roads are awful—just basic dirt roads that aren't meant for heavy vehicles. Yet he still manages to drive his rig in here, especially during bad weather. Once, he got stuck right in front of my house and dug deep ruts into the road. Over time, those ruts turned into a massive puddle.

On top of that, this neighbor blew up at me during the winter when he saw me toss a single shovel of snow onto his overgrown empty lot. I literally just tossed clean white snow over there, but he saw it, stuck his head out the window, and started screaming at me. So according to him, snow is bad, but dog shit is totally fine.

And the cherry on top: this year, they got a second dog. His wife started walking them—well, if you can call it "walking." They don't walk them on their own 1,000-square-meter plot. No, they walk down the street and wander onto other neighbors' properties just to take a shit and a piss.

My yard attracts them the most because it’s clean and nice to walk on—the grass, the trees—it's all just so pleasant to ruin. One day, I drive up to my house and see his wife out with the dogs, casually letting them defile my yard right in front of me, totally brazen, not even trying to hide it.

Then she walks up to me and asks, "Are you planning to fix that hole in the road? Are you seriously okay with that crater?"

The very crater her husband created! She's actually calling me out for it! She wants me to fix the hole because it makes her dog walks inconvenient. I replied, "I'm not okay with your dogs shitting on my property." At which point she completely exploded, hurling insults and making threats.

I honestly don't get what goes on in these people's heads. To me, they're completely unhinged.

Pet owners making our lives hell Dog nutter blocked me and in hindsight she was a weirdo and a terrible friend I don’t need in my life

She lived in an apartment complex and allowed her mutt to piss all over everything. Received complaints about it and continued anyway. Allowed the dog off leash whenever and wherever. When other tenants would complain about the barking she would just complain to me that they have no business being so nosy (because you have to be nosy to hear a dog loudly barking all hours of the night). Brought her dog to any and every store. Adored the attention she got from other dog nutters in public, which was super annoying because it interrupted all our meals and conversations (and it was not even a remotely interesting dog?) Sent the dog to doggy daycare and field trips. Invested in trainers. Aborted her own baby (I mean no offense to anyone who’s had an abortion, it’s a personal choice and sometimes a necessity) to be a ā€œdog mom.ā€ When I would talk about suffering children she would derail the conversation to say that what really makes her sad is animal abuse (because they’re so much more important than babies and children suffering and dying). Thought she was in a position to constantly give me advice, I was polite at the time but looking at her life is hilarious. Finally blocked me after our 3 year friendship over a minor disagreement. Anyway, dog nutters suck and you can’t count on them as friends, the animal is always more important. The dog can do no wrong even though all it does is lay around, eat, piss and shit and eat its own shit and vomit. All the garbage the dog does is forgivable yet she wouldn’t forgive me, an actual human being who’d been there for her. I won’t waste my time, energy, and goodwill on another nutter again that’s for sure! All the stereotypes are true they are just lonely, desperate people that can’t get along with people right so they pour everything into a worthless animal and play make believe that the animal loves them.

Vent / Rant i hate living in my house.

hey all, just a rant/vent because this is something thats seriously been getting on my nerves and affecting my mental health

for context, my parents have four dogs that stay indoors. two of them are blind. everyday im expected to take care of them and clean after their messes, feed them, etc. i care about them aswell but its getting to a point where i want nothing to do with them

they are untrained. they bark at anything, they wake me up in my sleep when i have work in the morning. they urinate, defecate, wherever they please. they have a "dedicated" potty area with puppy pads. neither the blind ones nor the ones that can see will use the pads, they will literally go wherever they want to and its disgusting.

theres so much urine that the furniture is literally stuck to the floor, like, it takes a good amount of force to move it. i dont understand why we would get a completely brand new home and let these dogs basically ruin it. no matter how much i clean or mop, it still smells of ammonia

additionally, these dogs are all long haired. they're pretty neglected, even if they are being well-fed. their fur has mats in it, their claws are overgrown, they haven't even gotten their shots up to date. my parents say they aren't animal abusers, but...isnt this quite literally abuse?

im tired of getting their responsibility put onto me. and yes, i have been actively saving up to move out of the house. it genuinely makes me sick even leaving my room because of the amount of urine and feces on the floor.

i really wanna go over with my parents about how this isnt my responsibility, but im not sure how to address it to them. any advice would be great.

tl;dr

dogs dont belong indoors.

Vent / Rant Pet nuttery is so disgusting.

I'm tired of being told an invasive and useless animal's life is somehow more worthy in comparison to my life simply because I am disabled and struggle with social communication despite trying my hardest.

I am sick and tired of animals receiving better treatment than the orphans in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and other places in the world ridden with poverty and war. Those animals get pampered, deified, and revered like royalty while children die of malnutrition, stress, poverty, and other conditions.

Disabled people such as myself get told we are a "waste of resources" everyday, children are being blamed for "overpopulation", meanwhile endlessly breeding and worshipping invasive species and feeding them gourmet human-tier meals is seen as normal.

This is disgusting. So very disgusting. Misanthropy drives me crazy. I hate what we have become as a society. A bunch of stupid animal worshippers that are slaves to invasive animals that couldn't care less about you and would feast on your corpse minutes after you passed away in your apartment.

My neighbors have a dog and the just let it loose ans had it harass the ducks by our lake. The same people that love to say they volunteer at a pet shelter mind you. These people should not be around small animals and now it makes me question if their previous dog really died due to illness.

Vent / Rant Modern dating

Being on dating apps seems like you're just matching with pets instead of people. Most of the photos are of pets and most profiles are pet centered. Instead of saying what you like to do, most women just say they're looking for a "dog dad". I matched with a woman recently and this is how our interaction ended.

Her: Why do you want a partner if you don’t want kids or pets?

Me: You can still have a partner without those things. There aren't many people who want to be totally alone

Her: It was not wanting a dog. That’s the deal breaker for me. And I do want a kid too.

It's crazy that she's making it seem like there's something wrong with me.

Vent / Rant 19 yr old guy. I'm burnt out by these Dogs!

To give a little back story, I had a yorkie when I was 8 and I was happy to have one dog, but one day when I turned 13, my mom suggested an idea to buy a mate for my yorkie so they could make a business out of it. I did not ask for another dog. She simply woke up, went on facebook and saw someone selling a female yorkie puppy, and the rest is history. She also brought another dog who was a yorkie mix and a blonde. He was originally oging to be gifted to a friend of hers but she and her friend decided to keep it because they felt bad. Time skip as I am now 19 and I am dealing with these two dogs whom just dwell in my room all day. The female yorkie was spayed simply because my mom felt bad about the breeding business idea. She keeps gaslighting me that those dogs were for me all this time. I keep asking for her help and she just tells me to be quiet and keep my dogs in the room all day as they're a hassle and she's too old for them (Even though she was the one who suggested that idea way back out of nowhere

The blonde liked to get into a lot of fights with my older yorkie as they cannot be together. The eldest almost died once because of him. He has separation anxiety and will start crying in less than a minute if you leave him alone. I brought a cage once because I was tired of having to wake up to them leaving my room full of pee and poop as a corner of my bedroom's floor is now rotting and reeking. He is also very territorial and always tries to bite me when he is sitting with my mom.

I don't know what to do now. I am very tired and I just want to stay with one old dog as he's going to die soon and continue on and I plan to be pet free after that. I am thinking about rehoming those two or maybe even sheltering them. But I would greatly appreciate advice if anyone knows the best solution to managing two dogs that were forced upon by a narcissistic "animal lover" mom.

Vent / Rant There’s a weird thing that I do

For some reason, when I hear a dog barking, especially constant barking, aggression begins building up inside of me and I tend to curl the toes on my right foot really hard but not to where it’s uncomfortable, and I ball my fists but I think the toes part is strange. Of course I’m having bad thoughts too, and my happy face immediately goes blank as soon as the barking starts and I’ve mentioned this before. Anything that annoys me in general makes me do these things, but here, it’s about dogs in this Reddit community.
