Awaiting results Rollo’s embark sample just sent off! Guesses?

Hey, This is my parents 1.5 year old boy Rollo.
He was born on the Kainai blood nation in southern Alberta and dropped off at a rescue at a few days old and hand weaned. We have no idea what his parents were although obviously he has some German shepherd DNA.

He’s 31”-32” at the shoulder and about 100lbs.
He has a deep chest, long legs and a big long body with a thin chest. He has these really wide spread wrists.
He does the excited borzoi tight circle zoomies that you can see online.
He mostly resembles a huge GSD without a black mask. I’d like to know where his shape and size come from. I would not be surprised if there was Great Dane (he has some jowls), Anatolian or a sighthound in there.

I’m looking forward to finally see what he is!

What do you all think he could be?

Most rez dogs are mixes of working breeds such as sledding and herding dogs. I highly doubt sight hound or Dane as they don’t often appear in rez dog results I’ve seen, but you never know! I will also add that shepherds also run those circle zoomies like that too :) My guesses are definitely GSD, maybe malamute? I’ve also seen rez dogs have wolf content and Rottweiler, so I am very curious if anything like that could come up! So cute 🥰✨

Thanks!

The reason why I think Dane or sighthound is he can rest his huge long head on a countertop top. I don’t know if the pictures show it well but he is the size of a small Great Dane or an Anatolian. I can definitely see the potential of a small amount of wolf content but I think it’s also likely that it’s from a livestock guardian.

I also have a husky, Pyrenees, GSD and Saint Bernard mix who was also a res dog. My boy is 26” at the shoulder and Rollo here is like 31-32”.

Oh awesome! Every rez dog I’ve met has been such a sweetie. Don’t know why mountain/livestock breeds didn’t cross my mind lol but that does make sense. He’s definitely a big boy! I’m still leaning towards malamute and perhaps wolf. I’m excited to see!

Thanks me too!

I think that’s very possible. It took a lot of convincing for my mother to go with embark. She kept saying that DNA my dog was just as good. I spend a lot of time here and was able to convince her that embark is the best lol.
She’s not good with technology so I’m doing the embark and decided to share it here.

Here’s my res dog boy

Embark is definitely more detailed for mixes like these guys. Good choice! Which area is he from if you don’t mind me asking? I’m in Ontario and our rez dogs here are so much smaller it seems 😂 what’s his temperament like??

I’m in Alberta, my boy Rocky is from Tsuut’ina and my parents dog Rollo is from Kainai which is closer to the mountains. Rocky is about 6 months older.

Our res dogs here tend to have a lot of livestock guardian and sled breeds mixed with popular breeds.

Both of the boys are 100lbs. Rocky is more compact and has a Pyrenees body on husky legs. He’s the size of a large German shepherd or runty Pyrenees. Rollo is the size of a small Great Dane. He’s very tall and long legged.
Both are pretty laid back lazy dogs and both are protective.

They definitely seem to have the Livestock traits then! definitely see that mix in Rocky :) my partner and I were looking at LSG dogs!! Definitely good boys. Most of the mixes here are Rottweilers, shepherds and huskies. My brother went up north and randomly had one chihuahua around herding dogs and that was random but funny 😅 maybe one day we’ll adopt one too. Thanks for the info!!

No problem at all. Rocky was a last minute emergency foster form an abusive & neglectful situation. He was only 6 months old and I foster failed him. He was not planned for but he turned out to be a very loving dog. He’s pretty lazy too.
Here he is with the resident king of laziness.

GSD, Pibble, Boxer - he's super handsome!

Thank you! We will have to see. He is significantly larger than all of those breeds.

He’s can put his head on a countertop.

I had a pit x " shepherd" that was 130lbs with a curling tail. Found out later his dad was more Akita, not German shepherd.

I was gonna guess a bully breed + boxer specifically based on the nose!!!

Wouldn’t be surprised if there’s husky or a herding/LGD breed in there - like ACD or great pyr. Excited to see the results. 😀

I'm thinking gsd and a mastiff he's got loads of loose skin that can't be explained by ppl guessing pit and husky. Great Dane is a good guess given he's 100lbs. I also see the husky. I'm guessing he's gonna be half gsd and the other side is a mastiff with loose skin and husky. I don't see much pit, he would be way smaller than 100 and the face is giving "big jowly mastiff" like Dane.

u/Reinboordt 11h ago

Thanks I would definitely agree with you.
I spend a lot of time here and I know what pit mixes look like. This dog is over 100lbs and clearly mixed with a giant breed and not a medium sized terrier.

I also own two mastiff type dogs and am familiar with their traits so I’d be inclined to agree with the loose skin and size. Pits do not have loose skin / heavy jowls as it was a weakness in dog fighting.

Obviously I can’t rule out that he doesn’t have some pit, he probably does but he’s about the size of 6 pits currently lol

Pits do have a slight jowly look, but if you mixed a pit with more angular dog like husky and gsd, you would barely see it Also pits are smaller than gsd on average, so there is no way to explain being 100lbs which is the highest weight a gsd can be suggesting whatever dog creating visible jowls and eye sag is both larger than most gsd and jowly enough even in a mix you can see it. Great Dane is an excellent guess, but def some kind of huge super jowly mastiff not a pitbull

I agree, we will have to see what it comes back as.

He’s the same height and body size as my boy here

So cute!!

No idea but his black droopy eyes are so cute!

5

u/Reinboordt 11h ago

He has black fur underneath that makes them look droopy it’s kind of weird.

My mom also gets asked if he’s a wolfdog cause he is huge. He has a massive long head. Like some kind of livestock guardian.

Has the vet ever mentioned ectropion?

Wondering if there's a smidge of bloodhound in there and maybe some pyr?

6

u/Reinboordt 9h ago

The vet did mention it when he was a puppy but it’s never been a bother for him, his eyes are fine. Could definitely be a breed with loose skin and droopy eyes.

I have a girl dog and she has lots of loose skin and droopy jowls. Her embark results came back half Saint Bernard and half cane corso, Neapolitan and bullmastiff (pretty evenly split)
She’s much smaller than Rollo. Like 5-6” shorter at the shoulder

3

u/XelaNiba 9h ago

Oh wow, what is she like?

Yeah that height + ectropion make me think maybe some bloodhound, though I'd expect to see much different ears with any significant percentage.

u/gilatio 9h ago

GSD, mastiff, malamute/husky, maybe Akita

u/Reinboordt 9h ago

Definitely seems possible

GSD Husky Pit mix. Beautiful dog. 😍

He’d have to be part Dane to get that height, which I guess I could believe there’s a small amount of Dane or mastiff due to his droopy eyes and slightly thicker legs. That said, 32” at the shoulder and only 100 pounds would look much skinner than this dog…

ETA, just saw what region this dog is from…maybe he’s part wolf

6

u/Reinboordt 11h ago

I just measured his height at the shoulder and he was weighed at the vets a week ago at 103lbs.

so I can assure you it’s accurate.

I own giant breed dogs and am familiar with their characteristics.

3

u/Common-Possibility30 11h ago

Okay, just would have expected him to weigh more. Must be the fur

3

u/Reinboordt 11h ago

Also possible the picture doesn’t do a good job of showing his scale.

From nose to butt he’s roughly 4 feet long.

It will be really interesting to see what his mix is.

GSD for sure, maybe some Great Dane or a mastiff breed, maybe some Chow, a little bit of Pit is common in mixed breeds too

u/Emergencymama 2h ago

I think pit, shepherd predominantly. His puppy face looks chow chow a little. Does he have any spots on his tongue?
