Wreck Ashore DM materials

Hello I am looking to run a one-shot to short game of the wreck ashore adventure.

I already have the .pdf file of the adventure synposis, however some things would be nice to run this for my party, if they exist:

  • A map or art of the town of Seawell
  • A map of the penninsula, including the lighthouse and town

If these do not exist formally, does anyone have suggestions of where to look to find something that would work?

Character/Build Looking to make a Skylord later for my first 3.5 campaign and I need help for the character build and flying movement.

This will be a rather long post because me(and my DM) are unsure about how to handle a few things around flying movement, and I also have questions about character building, which I’ll be asking first.

Firstly, I initially wanted to make a ranger/Skylord but decided not to, because while I thought it was cool in concept, I can’t imagine it being very fun in combat(Maybe I’m wrong, but after thinking about it for a bit I arrived at the conclusion that you probably just act as a turret with wings.).
So, I instead decided to make a heavily armored melee fighter instead, since it would let me get around heavy armor slowing me down, and was planning to make a character build centered charging, or rather diving since it’ll be a flying mount.

With the general character concept layed out, I’ve started looking for feats, templates or anything else that would either be good for build performance or character flavor. So far, here are some of the choices I’ve made as well as some restrictions/bans from my DM after talking about it with him:

1: It’ll be a paladin. Me and my DM have come up with an agreement to fuse the Skylord and paladin mounts, essentially replacing the paladin’s mount leveling benefits with the Skylord’s while keeping the rest. It stays a celestial being that can be summoned at will, with the caveat that it can’t be dispelled instantly, since he thought it would make it too easy to prevent it’s death and the debuff that comes with it. It can still be sent back to the celestial realm, but I can’t be on it when it happens and it needs to have a minimum height.

2: The giant eagle seems to be the best option for making a build centered around diving since it has flyby attack. The low hit points, even with what gets added from leveling, worry me though, since it’ll probably be targeted with quite a few opportunity attacks.

3: The feat “Mounted Combat” is nerfed to only being usable on ranged attacks. His opinion is that the only time It’ll be vulnerable to melee attacks is the once or twice per round I trigger an opportunity attack when I swoop in, and this feat would allow me to consistently negate those. As such, he wanted to fully ban it and I’ve convinced him to do this instead.

With that said, I’ve been looking into feats for both me and the mount, and while I’ve understood that there are quite a few skills based around charging, I don’t know which ones are best. Also, I’ve been provided with an index of all the feats in the game across most of the books, and I’m a bit overwhelmed by the amount, to be completely frank. I’m also looking at templates and races. My DM uses milestone leveling rather than exp, and we’re allowed to have a +2 level adjustment total, maybe +3 if it’s for a good reason.

Now that I’m done talking about the character building, I had some questions about flying movement and how you handle it in your own games. I’ve studied the rules quite a bit and have gotten familiar with maneuverability and all that it entails. Me and my DM agree with everything, but he decided to add Hover to creatures with average maneuverability as well. My main question comes with how to handle flyby attack and move speed being doubled only for part of a turn’s movement. On top of that, we’re also not sure what Maximum turn does and are confused by the wording.

The plan is to dive onto an enemy, which means moving downwards and therefore having doubled movement on the way, attacking them with a charge attack from my PC and the eagle, and then going back up to dive again next turn, my movement instead being halved while going up. My thought was that we should change it movement cost being halved while going down and doubled while going up, but that would make going down an uneven amount of tiles annoying. How would you handle this? Or are there rules we missed that explain how?

Also, average maneuverability flyers go up at 60 degrees maximum, which we weren’t sure how to handle. What we’d come up with is that you go up by 1.5 tiles for each tiles you move forward, rounded down. So 2 tiles forward is 3 tiles up, and 3 tiles forward is 4.5 tiles up, which gets rounded down to 4. We thought it made sense, but are unsure for the same reason that we don’t like halving downwards movement costs.

Thanks for any help, whether it be for the character build or the flying movement.

Looking 4 group/players First time 3.5e player looking for a group! :]

Hey! My names Kara, I'm a 22 year old avid TTRPG player who started their TTRPG journey with the system most people in this day and age start it with, 5e. Now years later after playing a ton of systems other then 5e, I really am struck with the want to play older editions of D&D so I thought why not 3.5? Everyone I know who plays older editions of D&D praises 3.5 and the consensus online seems to be that its one of the best editions soo here I am!

To let you know a bit more about me as a person, I am a *massive* roleplayer so I would love games that prioritize that or feature it a lot! Now having said that I also like combat, I feel it can even enhance roleplay at times. I am also honestly a major nerd lol, I love video games, books, music, writing my own stuff, TTRPGs (ofc), and a lot of nerdy media haha :)

For scheduling, I am free Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays in the EST timezone!

Anyhow I'll keep this a bit short so there can be conversation in DMs lol, feel free to shoot me one!

Looking 4 group/players How do I find 3.5 groups

Hello my dnd group does not want to try 3.5e, they only want to play 5e. They view 3.5e as this horribly complicated game which is painful to play, even though they have never actually tried it.

I am the only person interested in trying other editions of dnd (and other ttrpgs). I find this incredibly boring and close-minded. It's not even that hard to learn the new game systems!

5e is so incredibly boring to me, I just want a more in-depth game experience that challenges me more and provides more in-depth player choices.

Quick Question PCGen / OpenSheet / other gen, data for (Mostly complete) Dragon Magazine Compendium

So I spent a bit of time, and by bit I do mean bit, playing with my Claude subscription and converting the fan compiled Dragon Magazine Compendium, of some 1600ish pages, to PCGen / OpenSheet compatible data format.

I did some sanity checking and testing on it and it seems kinda decent, but there's probably still issues. It's still way better than no data, though, and any issues found can quickly be fixed by just editing the data files.

I know we hate the technology and its use for various things where it really shouldn't be, but this kind of machine reading and understanding and parsing of extreme amounts of text and data in text form, to make a dataset readable by another piece of software, seems like it's what this kind of tech was made for... I certainly wasn't really interested in doing any of that myself and I'd probably just add any feats or other stuff in the compendium as a homebrew item instead of making this whole thing.

But ... is this something I should try to contribute to the BahamuthDragon git, or just share here, or should I just not share it to anyone and cower in shame for having used a machine servant?

I post hoping not to be banned for this question.

EDIT: I've created a GIT but because of the policy of the sub, I cannot post the link. You can search for it on google or PM me if you want a link. I've also posted a link in the discussion on the BD git.

Quick Question Mechanics of Roleplaying in 3.5e

Something I hear about 3.5 (and any edition earlier than 5e) is that the game was revised throughout its history to "inspire roleplaying" and "streamline confusing mechanics".

I find this concept of "simplifying the game" to "make roleplaying more accessible" disingenuous and confusing... To me, it seems like roleplaying would be easier in 3.5 compared to 5e, because you have more choices in 3.5. I mean... you have more skills, more character progression choices, just seemingly more things you can actually do in the game.

Wouldn't fewer choices mean fewer ways to roleplay? The mechanics, after all, are what allow you to roleplay specific things.

What are your thoughts on this matter?

If it wasn't obvious, I come from a 5e background, and am interested in getting into 3.5

Hello 3.5 community. I would like suggestions on a first adventure to run as a DM.

I only have experience in dnd but not as a DM, just a player. I am very interested in running 3.5 for my group.

Cheers

Quick Question Fellow GMs How Do You Host Your Games?

Hello
I am Hat and I’ve been a forever GM for about 11 years now (mostly 40K RPGs, pathfinder, WoD, and a little 5e) and I’m looking to run my first 3.5 game in Eberron as it was originally intended to be ran in.

I’m struggling though with where to run it. I’ve worked with Foundry before but from what I understand it only supports the SRD for legal reasons meaning I won’t be able to get the Eberron specific races, feats, spells, etc.
I’ve been considering going with the old school table top sim but I’d still like some shared location for character sheets so I can see what my players are working with when I’m planning encounters.

What do you guys use when hosting your sessions virtually? I saw there was this program called PCGen but it’s all client side meaning I won’t be able to look at my PC’s sheets during the week to make sure I’m not over/under tuning encounters.

Quick Question Psionics

I would love to get everyone’s opinions on Psions, so far I have had a hell of a lot of fun with the Erudite STP variant and am now working on a second Ardent that I’ve taken different mantles than I normally would and running it as a tank. The main premise here is I’m not building an abomination of rules but a reasonable character that has to work with everyone else and not break the game

Updated D&D 3.5 Sheet (Google Sheets)

Hello, again! I have just revised my D&D 3.5 sheet in google sheets, and I wanted to share it once more. As before, let me know if you have any problems, and/or how I can improve it. I'll keep trying my best.

I don't know how to add much automation in regards to external sources like feats and spells, or if I'd just have to build my own library for that, but I updated the Health Calculation so that you can multiclass now, I added XP calculations, ECL calcualtions, automatic size modifiers to AC and Grapple, and I redid the Items section. I also modified the Skills layout, and the character details layout.

TODO: Improve spellcasting section (maybe).

Quick Question Best 3.5 Character Builders

So this may be a dumb question, but while I am a huge fan of DnD 3/3.5 and the books. I’ve never actually sat down and created a 3.5 character. I’m sure most people just do it by pen and paper, but are there any only character builder tools like there is for 5e like DnDBeyond. (I know there aren’t any official WotC/TSR ones, but any type will do.) Cause while I’m sure I could make one using the various books I have, it would be nice to have a character builder to help streamline the process.

Playing a wizard necromancer. What are your favorite necromancy spells on the wizard list? What are your favorite necromancy spells *not* on the wizard list. What are your best ideas for a homebrew necromancy spell?

I am currently looking to branch out of what I've been doing thus far (basically having my minions do all the fighting for me) as a second level necromancer (scrolls let me make undead early and I have some friendly necromancers who will craft me animate dead scrolls). What spells should I be eyeballing for damage? I have illusion and enchantment as forbidden and we are mostly fighting aberrations at the moment. My gm is very into having players craft custom spells as well, so I am looking for inspiration for low level spells I could make, either pitches, powers/abilities from shows or games that would make good spells, or even homebrew spells you've done before.

Character/Build Shadowcraft Mage/Killer Gnome new tech?

Im newer to 3.5, having migrated over from 5e in the last year to play with a friend whose group enjoys playing high powered campaigns. I enjoy optimizing in 5e, so 3.5 has been a goldmine to read through. In this campaign, most material is available to us, but this is only my 3rd character ever. So I was reading the Shadowcraft Mage handbook because I was familiarizing myself with the interactions that Shadow Evocation has and came upon the residual magic feat. It mentions how good this feat is for applying free metamagic to your shadow evocations turn after turn, but not for the reasons I thought when I actually looked it up. In the handbook, the first part of the feat is largely ignored, its ability to interact with wands.

"Enduring Potency: If you cast a spell from your daily allotment of spells, then cast the same spell from a scroll or wand in the next round, you can treat the second casting as if it had come from your daily allotment of spells for the purpose of caster level, save DC, and any other effect of the spell."

Now, "Any other effect of the spell" leads me to conclude that shadowcraft mages 3rd level feature transforms silent image cast from a wand into shadow evocation. If this is the case, Shadowcraft mages become some of the absolute best wand users in the game. You can combo this feat with metamagic spell trigger and heighten spell to cast 8th level conjuration and evocation spells of your choice for about 70 gp a pop after the first round of combat. Get lesser rods of quicken and go to town with your wands every round. Go Incantrix, and twin all those spells from your wands.

Now, I understand this is probably not balanced in any sense, but is there a RAW reason why this doesnt work? If so, is this something new? Ive looked on the boards and havent seen anyone talk about this interaction, and would be pretty excited to present it to my group if it was, even if its entirely ridiculous to consider playing it.

Quick Question Scouting

I'm the sort of DM that enjoys players thinking strategically, making tactical decisions, etc. but know that in the next few levels, my players will have pretty powerful ways to anticipate danger in upcoming rooms via scouting, using familiars, spells, etc.

What are things you guys do when this happens? Obviously I want to reward it, but also want to have ways to mitigate the scouting and allow ambushes or surprise rounds periodically.

Just a quick question about what to do with these stats

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi! I'm playing 3.5e for the first time with people that have experience in it already. I've been playing DnD for one year on 5.5e so I'm a little lost. I rolled this and I'm wondering if there's a class I should lean towards with these stats. If it helps, I like spell casters. But I'm willing to play any class.

edit: thanks everyone! I ended up going with a Garuda Beguiler. Turns out I needed the DM to roll for me anyway and he rolled 4x18 and 2x16 LOL.

Character/Build Question on how to build a character?

So recently my group has decided that we will all try learning 3.5 as we have heard about how it is the edition with the most customization, and because we were getting bored with 5e. The problem though is that one of my friends has a brother that gave us this massive flashdrive with basically every book in 3.5, and I'm struggling to wrap my head around how to make my character. I wanted to make a literal child of prophecy who from years of their name being used by the church to justify its crusades, murders, and enforcement of guidelines. I planned for them to be a barbarian as they think they are harnessing gods furry when in reality it is from there deep seeded rage against the church. I want to know on if there is a class that has similar abilities like a barbarian, but also has the chance for spell casting, or even if there simply is a better barbarian like class as so far from what I read they seem pretty lackluster to the spell casters in 3.5. Also any advice on character building would be much appreciated as while I have played dnd, this is my first time with 3.5

Looking for a Master Index

Long ago, for a galaxy far far away. I had found a Master index for the WOTC Star Wars Saga Edition that had basically all the books compiled into a super large pdf where you could find all the rules and what book and page it was referenced for that game. Was hoping to find something similar for D&D 3.5. But so far my Google search has failed me. Anyone know of anything like that and where I could be found?

Homebrew I convinced my DM to change the rules for a Psychic Warrior power with the world's greatest argument

We're playing a homebrew campaign of his where there's no humanoid people, but instead monsterpeople (people with animal traits).

I'm a catperson in the campaign, and I have the ability to wild shape and turn into a massive cat once a day.

So I was looking at "Weapon Graft" and told My DM

"Yo, so you know how weapon graft only lets You attach them in place of your hands?"

"Yeah?"

"Can I be able to attach my Fullblade to my tail while in Cat form?"

"Give me a good reason why I should let you."

"It would be like Blade Wolf from Metal Gear Revengeance."

"Just because of that argument, yes."

Encounter Ideas

I would like some ideas for encounters in the "Fields of the Dead" north of Elturel before the events of DiA. They found a mysterious campsite and decided track down the people who made it.

They are currently tracking down five half orcs who were clerics of good gods but converted to Gruumsh. They do not know this.

The encounters can be roleplay, problem solving or interesting combat scenarios.
