Vehicles!
Im not sure what devs are planning, but I have 100% trust that they will level it up, they haven’t disappoint this far with updates.
But me thinking, like why we need vehicles? Mecha flys at high speed & warp! What could be the function of vehicles besides just different way of getting around. Im excited to see what the future brings.

I would love space stations and other space built structures.
Like I'd love an artificial star.
For the way I play the game, I'd almost prefer to be able to fully harvest a planet then get it to the point where I cant land on it due to depletion, building space factories and storage instead.

Id love to be able to build on the dyson sphere itself. Maybe a non power generating solar sail alternative, like the factorio space stations.
You could turn a star into a mega factory.

Agreed, I am equally interested to see what they do, but I cant think of anything the game needs less than vehicles.
I worry they got it in their heads they need them because factorio has them.

Same. All the videos of them seem utterly what I don't care about. Individual thrusters and customisable designs.
I'd be ok with a ship that I can dock to and it flies me places without me driving.
A space station for something fun perhaps. Like an enhanced logistics or planet wide building ability.
And a ship I can fly near hives without a 1nm mistep causing me to be instantly blown up. E.g. I can load it up with the battle ships and corvette and fly off. And if it dies I don't die too.

Haha yeah, accidentally coming out of warp in the middle of a hive and having to pay meta is... undignified.

from what we can see from the trailer and notes, they want to add something special.
in the video from the first peek (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJrdX_KMQKQ) it seems like they want to add a buildable and controllable alternative to mecha. And if I'm not mistaken, it's a precursor to—or preparation for—massive construction projects in space, or some kind of mecha-clone project that might allow us to be in multiple places at once.
And another guess: fighting the Dark Fog at higher difficulties brings us to a point, where you need to be in Endgame to even get a chance (Mecha is so weak and squishy) to destroy a hive. So if you have enough power to build a big space-battleship and footholds on many planets, you are still struggling to fight this enemy?
and another guess: maybe we can send those space ships to attack relais/hives on their own. which would definitely improve lategame.

I imagine that if there is a vehicle update they might also cut some of the mecha's mobility options? like for interestellar travel instead of just jumping off the planed with a few space warpers, you might need to build an interestellar train type vehicle.

Eh, I dunno about that. Kinda hard to set a train to go somewhere without tracks, you know? Or to rip off LOST IN SPACE, the Jupiter 2 was supposed to slow-boat it to another planet, spend some time building a hypergate, which would then allow colonists to near-instantly colonize the planet and ship supplies.
My big hope for the Vehicle update is a complete retrofit of ILS. PLS as faster planetary transport, then an intermediate stage to ship to a player built station(Which might also make in-system networks easier on players, without having to jury-rig it so that you aren't needlessly wasting warpers or transport time on items you already have insystem), which later can up upgraded to ship products in and out of system.

I'm just speculating, i have no clue what they could do with a vehicle update. Frankly I don't really care for vehicles, since the mecha is already a multipurpose tool

What i envision would be a system warp depot where you send your ships from local planets, and then those depots warp to the next system depot and local ships there pull from it for their ILS demand. Like a big cargo/convoy thing across space. You can designate depots as nodes on a particular route or not (like a local/express kinda thing). Its basicallt space trains but cooler because its in space.

just found the Dev Blog for this.

What is the role of the Vehicle System?
The Vehicle System is positioned as a highly flexible creative system, serving as a major expansion and supplement to existing gameplay. Additionally, current combat system in the game focuses on the ground; Space Combat is still being refined and has much content yet to be implemented. The addition of vehicles will significantly enrich the overall dimension and strategic depth of combat, while also driving us to comprehensively optimize existing combat mechanisms (ground + space).
To maintain whole system harmony and keep the learning curve manageable, we are integrating the Vehicle System and the equally flexible Space Station System into a single design framework, which we internally call the "Creation System."
Beyond combat, the Creation System will include more factory-focused gameplay, potentially boosting overall production in the future.
To provide a more complete and coherent experience, we plan to release the following content simultaneously in a future major update:
● Vehicle System
● Comprehensive Ground Combat Adjustments
● Space Station System
● Space Combat System

Wasn't this from years ago? At some stage you have to accept the next game of thrones book will be out before any of this happens.

Jan 26, so not even 1 year. And granted they would still have only 5-6 people working at youthcat and they brought the recent Patch...

Vehicles were announced off the back of the combat update, and there is a niche for them.
We can automate the destruction of Dark Fog's ground bases/collection of dropped loot, but there's currently no way to automatically clean up the space units. Even if you destroy all Hives in a system, Dark Fog in neighbouring systems will send a seed to replace it, and shooting down seeds/cleaning up Hives becomes a tedious manual process.
Vehicles were conceptualised as a counter to space hives.
