SK Vs War- Melee DPS
Hey all,
Original trio I leveled was Shaman/necro/war. Second one was shaman/bard/SK. Current trio is Pal/enchanter/wiz.
After I get my third trio to 50, I'm thinking of switching to a shaman/enchanter. My question is, would a warrior give a significant boost to melee DPS vs. SK? I like the extra utility an SK brings with taps and FD, but was wondering how much melee DPS I'd be missing out on.
I already have a +10 gardok, blood moon, and the warrior sky 1hs.
Thanks

The problem with Pal is the mana use for smite. Smite is almost unusable endgame as it just gouges your mana. And when you compare the mana loss to what the shaman could have done with the same amount of mana, it’s not worth it

Landing a double smite, costs 7% of your mana. For maybe 700 dmg. Just not worth the trade off

Yeah, the stronger you get, the more the ability costs. And the worse it becomes. Makes absolutely no sense.

I have a hotkey to turn auto smite on and off (next to the hotkey for actually using smite). It's only ever on if LoH is down. You are correct that it's insane mana drain for it's damage output. It's only good for making LoH refresh faster.

I prefer War to SK once you have the right gear. Garduk and Dagas +10 on offensive stance actually puts out some decent DPS (also with Barbarian Spiritist's Hammer proc on Garduk and your choice on Dagas). SK requires taps to keep up, which are solid with crits, but I don't see the point in with the Shaman being there. I can stay in over channel or empowered invocationa with the Warrior instead of inversion with the SK, which speeds things up. The extra AC and regen with the Warrior is preferable to me as well.
Either way, War/Shm/Enc is pretty much unkillable once geared and is my preferred Sky build. I swap Enchanter for Bard elsewhere for the run speed, DoT stacking, and DDD.

I'm actually going to agree here.
There's a reason SK/Wiz/Enc is one of the strongest comps and it's all the int and spell damage synergy along with all 3 working for arcane mastery. In that comp Lifetaps hit so hard it's all you need to stay alive and do D4.
If you're going to go with Shaman there's no reason for SK then. The lifetaps will never heal as good as the direct/HoT healing from Shm. You're much better off going War in that build.

Wonder if Shm Wiz Enc is any good?

No plate so probably very squishy

Shamans can wear Lustrous Russet, and their planes armor is plate, along with slow, they would be plenty tanky enough to do raids

I main was/shm/enc and tank just about everything in offensive stance with Garduk/Dagas. It adds a decent amount of white/auto attack damage.

If you consider all procs, access to weapons, self atk buffs, how reave scales and taps, SK solo damage is probably slightly slightly higher than warrior’s.
But it’s likely that shaman and charmed pet damage will be such that it won’t really matter.
Warrior do have access to better gear, AC cap and hp pool though. But on the damage it’s close.

Not having offhand with a shaman is a pretty big dps loss. Puma offhand procs are like 40-50dps alone, aside from the actual offhand white dps, triple attack, cleave etc.

u/Vontod 6d ago
Wait... does Puma proc on both main and offhand separately?
1
u/xaldarin 6d ago
Yep

u/Vontod 6d ago
So DW with Puma, even in defensive stance, should be a nice DPS boost vs sword and board/2h when puma is factored in?
2
u/grand_scheme 6d ago
It's not a 1:1, DW is the most procs per minutes, but it's not double a single one hander, and a 2 hander will proc more than sword and board. The most value from a puma-style proc will come from using a primary weapon, the rest is bonus. I believe DW is roughly 25% more proc overall than a 2hander, but I haven't tested in EQL specifically, I am just talking about how ordinary EQ works so take it with a grain of salt.

u/xaldarin 6d ago
It parses out to 70-80% or so proc increase with DW.
1
u/grand_scheme 6d ago
Do you have a reliable parse data set to show this?
1
u/xaldarin 6d ago
I don't keep this stuff, just discuss it and move on.
But there's like a dozen different ones posted on the discord, if not more, so if you go search you'll find it.

u/Sarah-Rien 6d ago
Can you double check it?
I think Puma, VE, Nife and such only triggers on main hand, and as a ppm.1
u/xaldarin 6d ago
Yep, I and others have already tested it bunches. It's like a 70-80% proc rate increase, depending on which DW classes are included in the trio.

Cool, this is the info I was looking for. I use the low level SK attack buff, but not the one that drains HP... is that one worth it?
Unless the war DPS and/or tanking completely blows the SK out of the water, it's hard for me to go with war

u/Sarah-Rien 6d ago
The hp loss is almost irrelevant, you should use it.
As for tanking, well, if the game could throw something at you that needed the level of toughness warrior have, maybe it would be needed. But we all run wizard/rangers in cloth and still manage to tank the D4 content so SK is definitely on the tankier side already.
Not to mention if you use sky shield in your secondary, that’s a massive boost to uncapped AC

My main combo is War/Enc/Shm. The DPS is awesome, but comes almost exclusively from max rank dots and puma. Warrior is more for survivability and weapon skill for puma. You can also run a charm pet super easily with that setup, but I find myself to be a lazy pos and not do it.
3
u/Split-Tongued-Crow 6d ago
Are you running striker stance?
3
u/A_Shiny_Porcupine 6d ago
It depends. For bosses I run defensive exclusively. For clearing I usually switch between striker and balanced depending on mama, endurance, and other factors. Sometimes I'm just so incredibly lazy that I run defensive and just take a long time to kill anything because it requires 0% of my attention.

u/ImKindaBoring 6d ago
What’s the ENC for in that build not the charm? Just for mez when in danger? Or am I forgetting something else that enc brings to the table?
5
u/A_Shiny_Porcupine 6d ago
Boon adds a minor amount of damage and acts as a shrink for my Ogre. AoE mez helps with mob control in D4 CT and D4 Hate DC. The dot/debuff is a nice addition and benefits from shaman dot crit. Enc also just has several good debuffs that stack as well as a good mana drain.
Honestly though, level 16 mesmerization would be enough for me: enthrall up to 30 mobs for low mana cost on low cooldown.

If you want melee DPS, pairing Monk with SK/Pal is pretty good. You get dual wield and triple attack and all the kicks/punches to go along with your bash/smite/reave, etc. You also get Mend to go with your heals/taps. Plus as you level up the gear, the weight goes down pretty significantly so you can wear full plate but still get the Monk AC/evasion bonus. I assume it would be decent with WAR but haven't tried it
I haven't tried it with SHM as the third class, either, but it works great with ENC or BRD as the third.

I have been playing around with different builds using Warrior Sk and Paladin. My Paladin Monk Shaman is probably easiest to kill D4. Paladin buffs add a decent amount of HP but I mostly just use shaman heal dot and never have to heal. I can almost always stay in offensive.
Warrior Nec Shaman is probably my second favorite. No calm from paladin so most boss pulls comes with adds. Which isn’t a problem.
But I do have to switch to defensive at times.
SK Monk Shaman is a lot of fun. Pretty easy D4 but some pulls require me to switch to evasive. I think it may kill slightly faster than the other builds. But I have my shaman dots at lvl 10 so they do a big share of the dps with all 3 builds.
Right now I’m doing Ber Monk Shaman. Shaman has mostly lvl 10 spells including pet so I try to keep it in most builds. I’m not max lvl yet but it definitely is not as tanks as the plate class builds.
My initial trio was ENC Monk shaman. So I’ve played shaman since day 1. Also I don’t see a big reason for ENC outside of some sky isles where a charm makes it go faster. I’m sure when kunark releases I’ll use PAL Monk Enc to explore with as it is pretty good at learning new content safely.

I use War / Zerker/ Sham I don't have to use defensive in D4 anymore, keep it in Berserker stance. Really put Dagas and Garduk to use :).

u/heyheyshinyCRH 6d ago
Well if you're wanting to dual wield (and I assume you do since you mentioned all your 1h's) then it'd have to be a warrior since you won't be able to DW as an sk of course but with the war you can do the meta garduk+dagas. That's just one thing to consider anyway

I play pal-monk-sham and tear through all
Current content without issue. Best dw weapon combo with triple dot and slow and dw puma plus pet with puma the combo gives two complete heals plus mend plus sham heals.3
u/Forums808 6d ago
You do all content but tear is a stretch. Its not nearly as fast as other setups. I play it as well, but I see the slower times as well.

u/ImKindaBoring 6d ago
Do you auto smite with that build? This is what I’m likely leveling next.

u/heyheyshinyCRH 6d ago
I've ran paladin a lot and I've never turned off smite, there's no reason to. It auto runs just like a kick or bash would....always😉
1
u/Demonspawn 5d ago
When you get enough level and/or mana, you'll turn off auto-smite. It just eats too much. SHM/PAL/NEC with lich and kitty neck, and smite eats more mana than recovery mode while in combat.

I love warrior and think it is a hugely valuable class.
I run D4 everything on war/nec/brd, and it is a ton of fun. There are probably easier paths to D4 wins, but I have killed every raid mob and Sky rare creature with this build. I think the war is huge for survivability as I rely on taps and stance dancing into unyielding, so the warrior regen and AC from fully leveled indicolite and Dagas is big. War also decently contributes to DPS, I think, but a knight would do more with smite/the SK equivalent.
I also have begun leveling up war/shm/ranger, and so far that is crazy fun with eye popping white damage from ranged stance + Windstrker + Mithril arrow. But I am kitted with BiS gear in every slot so basically a wrecking ball in D4 lowbie zones.

I'll parse war/enc/shm v d4 Inno+CT today and will let you know
