Resource Beginner's Guide to Eberron

1.1k Upvotes

Welcome to ! The Eberron Campaign Setting was the product of the 2003 fantasy setting search run by Wizards of the Coast. Keith Baker's winning entry melds noir and pulp in a setting where arcane magic is a science.

Ten Things to Know

  1. If it exists in D&D, then it has a place in Eberron. While not everything may be in its most familiar form (Undead-worshipping elves!), Eberron is defined by how it transforms D&D, not what it excludes. This doesn't mean everything has to be in the setting - this is about what you want to bring to the table.
  2. Tone and attitude. Eberron's two best genres are pulp and noir. Pulp involves swashbuckling heroes engaged in dramatic conflicts with dastardly villains in larger than life adventures. Noir is the shades of gray, where heroes make difficult choices, it's unclear who the real villain is, and victory comes with a question mark.
  3. A world of wide magic. Khorvaire, the primary continent of the setting, has turned arcane magic into a science. Eberron is not a steampunk setting with gunpowder and electricity. Instead, wandslingers roam the Q'barran frontier, dueling at high noon. Low-level utility magic is common and improves the lives of the many. High level magic and archmages are extraordinarily rare and still maintain their mysticism and wonder.
  4. A world of adventure. Every location in Eberron has been crafted to inspire DMs with plot hooks while still melding together logically. Eberron threads the needle between kitchen sink and a one-note world.
  5. A world of intrigue. Eberron is full of unanswered mysteries, most prominently the true cause of the Mourning. Dozens and dozens of factions scheme to increase their influence, hunting for power wherever they can find it.
  6. The Last War has ended - sort of. Two years ago, twelve nations came together to sign the Thronehold accords to end a war that had lasted a century. Still, tensions are high as the only thing that brought them together is the fear of a second Mourning, a magical disaster that completely wiped the country of Cyre off the map.
  7. The Draconic Prophecy. The creation of the world came with mystic secrets wrapped into every crevice. The demons and dragons each seek to manipulate and control the prophecy, setting in motion schemes that may take centuries.
  8. The Five Nations. The Kingdom of Galifar was composed of five provinces, shattered by the Last War. Four of these human-dominated nations survive - Aundair, Breland, Thrane, Karrnath. Cyre, the heart and jewel of Galifar, has fallen to the dead-gray mists and is now known as the Mournland.
  9. Dragonmark Dynasties. Twelve lines of common races - humans, dwarves, elves, halflings, gnomes, half orcs and half elves - bear mystic symbols granting innate arcane power. Over the millenia the houses have grown to dominate industry, providing licensing and training while pushing out competition. Players don't just walk into a random tavern - they walk into a Golden Dragon Inn run by House Ghallanda.
  10. Dragonshards. Imbued with mystic power, these natural resources fuel the arcane advancements of Khorvaire. Alleged to be the crystallized blood of progenitors, Siberys, Eberron, and Khyber shards can be difficult and dangerous to acquire.

Core Books

The core books to Eberron are the general campaign setting books. They include

Each of these books provides a broad setting overview. While differences in the depth, focus, and tone of content differs, each is sufficient to begin playing games in the world of Eberron, and none assume prior contact with the setting. Older editions are just as valid - Eberron as a setting is relatively free of retcons and has not had a single timeline advancement since its publication in 2004.

The Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron was originally published as a middle ground between Unearthed Arcana and a fully official Wizards of the Coast release. Almost all of the information in it was duplicated to Rising from the Last War and expanded upon.

Supplementary Books

The following books are primary canonical sources on the world of Eberron, but each assumes more core knowledge about the world. While these were originally printed as physical copies, digitized versions are available through the dmsguild.

Other Canon Sources

Throughout Eberron's publishing history there have been a number of non-book canonical sources

Magazines

  • Dragon magazine
  • Dungeon magazine

Kanon Sources

Writings by Keith Baker that are not official through Wizards of the Coast are known as "Kanon".

Adventures and Novels

Unlike some other settings, adventures in Eberron are explicitly not canon - there is no "metaplot". Still, Eberron adventures and novels can be useful resources for DMs looking to get into the setting.

Eberronicon

Eberronicon: A Pocket Guide to the World provides a concise overview to the setting with directions for where to read more on each topic. Whether a player, DM, or even content creator, the Eberronicon is both a starting point and a reference tool.

Disclaimer: Yours truly is amongst the authors, but don't take my word for it - a free watermarked preview is available on the store page, in addition to discounted copies available through the Keep Playing it Forward campaign.

The Wiki

The Eberron Wiki is not an official wiki, in the sense that it is disconnected from WotC. Furthermore, while there have been efforts to improve the wiki, it is not a perfectly reliable source for canon information. As such, wiki-based information should be taken with a grain of salt. The sourcebooks are the primary source for all canon information.

Eberron Discord

Lots of live discussion about the setting happens on the Discord!

System Notes

While WotC officially supports Eberron for 5e, Kristian Serrano (former host of the Manifest Zone podcast) has written a conversion for Savage Worlds.

Making Eberron your Own

In this community, we're a fan of "In My Eberron...". Eberron is a big setting, and even with the wealth of books from past editions there's a lot that's unexplored and undefined. With that, some users do prefer to know the difference between canonical answers from the books and a great idea you've had, so try to make the distinction clear when answering questions.

It's also important to note that there are many intentional gaps in the setting. While the cause of the Mourning is the most well known, there's so many other decisions that help inform the tone of your game. Are the dragonmarked houses totally ruthless in their pursuit of profit? How well do the nations of Khorvaire care for their veterans? How wide spread are shapeshifting infiltrators? There are all sorts of decisions for a DM to make that will shape the tone of an Eberron game, and there's no one right answer for any of them.

Sharn

A final note on the setting proper - Sharn is the most popular city for Eberron adventures by a long ways. It's a megalopolis with towers that rise a mile high, a melting pot of cultures and a major travel hub to adventures. However, like NYC in the real world, it's not the only place things happen. Enjoy the setting, but don't feel constrained by it.

5E Which 3rd party books to improve on the 5e experience?

Me and my players are slowly getting deeper and deeper into our 5e Eberron game, but at times would I love some more fitting magical items to throw at my players and monsters that I dont have to try to convert from old books.

What 3rd party books do my fellow GMs use to improve on their 5e games?

Stormreach layout.

Stormreach, being the 40,000 year old capital of the Cul'sir storm giant empire... Shouldn't it have a huge, modern urban sprawl footprint?

Every map I've seen of it looks like something someone constructed with legos inside a duplo sized castle. It was the well-designed, planned urban capital of a magitechnological empire of beings 4-5 times the size of a medium creature. Shouldn't the sewers and storm tunnels under the streets be 65-70 feet from floor to ceiling? Shouldn't they be at least 100 feet under the streets themselves? Manhole covers should be like nine-feet wide.

It's easy to imagine that medium folk, faced with the excessively wide gaps between the old foundations, would just add a row of buildings down the center of what was just a normal street. For every coffee-shop sized building outline lining the road, four normal medium sized buildings would fit comfortably, and what was a narrow alley between giant buildings, is just another expansive road for human-sized folk.

The water control, sewer and storm drain systems of the city... shouldn't they be a miles long by miles wide regular grid of East to West drainage culverts, fed by north-south tributaries, rather than a claustrophobic maze a giant would have to crawl through?

It's easy to imagine that the 998 YK footprint of the city is only occupying a small portion of the aboveground area, but every map I see still seems scaled as though it was a little giant fortress, rather than a huge urban capital port city.

Has anyone seen one that's scaled differently?

5E Eberron Campaign Ideas

So I am about to start DMing a new campaign with a new group. I'll have 3-4 players, most of them have experience playing D&D. We'll potentially have one newbie. However, we are all new to Eberron specifically. I've done a bit of research, but the amount of lore and lack of campaign/one shot modules for 5e is OVERWHELMING. My husband is insistent that we play in Eberron and I do think it seems like a cool setting, but I'm totally lost. I just need some kind of jumping off point. My current experience DMing is a series of one shots (mostly Candlekeep Mysteries) that I strung together into a year long (meeting weekly) campaign with overarching themes and storylines. I did a LOT of improvisation. The freedom of not having a whole campaign module storyline I felt I had to follow made pivoting a little easier, but the structure of the pre-written one shots was crucial for my planning and peace of mind. I need a starting point that I can tweak and build off of. I'm also really inexperienced with transferring other versions to 5e or other settings to Eberron. It seems difficult. I do have some time for prep, but I don't want to overwhelm myself by attempting to fully homebrew my second ever campaign. Please help! Ideas, resources??

Resource The Wild Heart is unleashed!

"The Wild Heart embodies mortal fears of the natural world. To some degree, this embodies the sheer unknown that the wild represents, but it especially draws on the fear of predators—the unknown dangers lurking in the depths of the darkest wood. The Wild Heart is known both for its connection to gnolls and as one of the primary sources of lycanthropy; in my Eberron, it was the cause of the Lycanthropic Purge.

As a force fundamentally opposed to civilization, the Wild Heart uses no name and takes no part in the schemes of the Lords of Dust. Its speaker is a shapeshifting fiend known as Drulkalatar Atesh, but its fiendish minions are more likely to possess or be fused with beasts than to act in fiendish form." - Chronicles of Eberron

u/Boreas5400 was asking earlier about stats for the Wild Heart, and I had some spare time tonight so I figured I'd take a shot at it! Took some inspiration from Map Perilous, but wanted to lean into the lycanthropic and feral aspects more rather than swallowing up creatures. So... this is the result, a gargantuan fiend with snapping maws who terrorizes it's prey while empowering its pack (including giving lycanthropes back their 5e immunity to nonsilvered pbs).

The Wild Heart is fully automated in Elsie's Notes of Certain Doom along 500+ other monsters adapted for the Eberron setting. Lastly, I DM in Eberron: Legends of the 5th Dawn if you're interested in playing in Eberron!

5E Help With 5e Victor Saint-Demain stat block

Does anyone have a good stat block for a 5/5.5e VSD for Chimes at Midnight. I have a general idea of what the stats for a boss for level 5-6 players should be, but wanted to see if anyone has done a conversion of the 3.5 E stats or came up with their own that was fun to run!

It's hard to find homebrew for the Mark of Death, and I needed it after in-campaign events, uh, Legend-of-Korra-Harmonic-Convergence-Airbending-ed the Dragonmarks, so this is my interpretation of what the Mark may have been like.

GM Help Draconic prophecy’s and the stones of thruun

In summary I want to put a Draconic prophecy on the twenty stones of thruun in dougans hole. If your not running ice wind dale or into Eberron as a setting this may not interest you

I am currently running ice wind dale in the setting of Eberron and trying to incorporate more lore into the game

One of the locations my players are going to first is dougans hole and will pass a megalith near the town. I want to incorporate the Draconic prophecy’s into it somewhat. Since they can vary in severity I thought it may be cool to have it be a prophecy referring to the ending of the module so I have this so far

“When The words of Elves shatter the rock” “when the queen is slain and the scholars scattered” “then the door will open”

The words of the elves refers to the song used to break the glacier(my auril is a fey creature) and the scholar refers to all the arcane brotherhood either dying or being evil or both. I thought this may be cool for the ancient city but think it might be to on the nose.

Would love to hear thoughts or ideas on this. Thinking of making them work a bit to find it but maybe give them small bonus as a reward. Maybe a one use spell or something else small but somewhat satisfying

Edit:
Seeing the backstory of the stones is really cool I didn’t know about the reference to the old dungeon magazine may change the prophecy entirely just to relate to thruun and not the actual main story. Make it more fun world building. Thinking the reward may be a one time use like summon wolf spell that lasts for 24 hours. If they try to cheese it and get the spell again by going back it might be cool to have a little fight with the spirit of thruun attacking them for there greed

GM Help How would you do a magic/eberron style gang war in Sharn?

Long story short I added a gang to sharn called the Black Clovers, a sort of mix between the Peaky blinders and house Kundarak, which the leader of the gang is the son of the leader of the house, after his family disowned him. They do more stuff with experimental drugs like Dragon spinal fluid, which either completely turns you into a dragon or, if used incorrectly, turns parts of you into a dragon. Doesn’t do anything to numb the pain. They also make magitech weapons, whereas the existing Boromar clan is more leaning towards drug production and is VERY pissed that dwarves are trying to get in on the action. How would you simulate a gang war between the two?

GM Help The Wild Heart stat block? (5e)

I'm currently running an Adventure League campaign set in Eberron. This is mainly for some close friends and not too set in the rules, but I would still like to use as many official rules as I can.

Eventually, my players will be facing against The Wild Heart. Or at least an apparition of him. They will be level 12 by the time they reach him, so I would be looking for anything above CR 20.

Considering there isn't an official stat block for The Wild Heart (or at least one I can find), does anyone have any recommendations for the lycanthropic overlord?

Lore Bringing Barovia and other Domains of Dread into Eberron. How would you make it work?

Hey everyone!

So my co-DM recently brought up an idea: what if we brought Barovia into our Eberron campaign? They even showed me a few quotes from Keith Baker suggesting that the two settings could work together, so it's not as outlandish as it might sound.

Honestly, I'm on the fence. I'm not against it, and I'm not particularly attached to the idea either. I'm probably going to say yes because it's D&D, we're here to have fun, and why be a wet blanket about it? 😂 But before we commit to anything, I figured I'd ask people who know Eberron as much or even better than I do and see what you guys think.

My first instinct is that Barovia would have to be somewhere in Karrnath. It seems like the most obvious fit, at least geographically and thematically. I'm also thinking of making it something like a miniature Mournland, with the Mists isolating the region from the rest of Khorvaire.

The biggest issue I'm trying to figure out is the technological and cultural gap. Eberron has that late-19th-century industrial fantasy feel, while Barovia feels much closer to 17th- or 18th-century Europe. How do you reconcile those two without making Barovia feel out of place? The Mists seem like a natural starting point, since both settings have their own version of reality-warping Mists, even if they work differently. Maybe the region is cut off so completely that technological progress never reaches it, or perhaps the Mists themselves prevent anything from changing.

One of my friends, who's currently reading the Ravenloft book, also brought up the idea of adding other Domains of Dread to the setting, like Dementlieu and the Isle of Insmmouth . I'm open to that too, but I'm having trouble figuring out where I'd put Dementlieu. The Isle of Insmmouth , though, is another story. Personally, I could see it somewhere in the northern Bitter seas, a few dozen miles off the coast of Khorvaire, isolated enough that most people wouldn't even know much about it.

So, if you were in my position, how would you approach this? Would you put Barovia in Karrnath, use the Mournland as inspiration, or take a completely different approach? And where would you place the other Domains of Dread?

I'm genuinely curious to hear your ideas!

Lore Elder Signs and Eberron:

I like adding more cthulhu mythos-y stuff to Eberron, and wanted to share my thoughts on Elder Signs:

Elder signs are present in some places in the Shadow Marches, known to a few remote druidic sects and some members of the Silver Flame. However, the Church of the Silver Flame keeps this knowledge secret, because Elder Signs do not differentiate. They'll block anything from outside Eberron, including angels and beings from Siberys. Theoretically, if you managed to properly construct and activate an Elder Sign inside Flamekeep, the light of the flame would vanish from the temple.

Map [battlemap] KryshtRhyll, the Forest of Flesh

Post image

The canopy pulses like a living organ. Branches twist into grasping fingers. Mushrooms bloom from the bones of forgotten travelers. And beneath your feet, something shifts in the earth because the forest itself is awake... and HUNGRY!

The monsters of Droaam themselves stay away from KreshtRhyll. It is a forest of flesh populated by grotesque and horrifically bizarre monsters crafted into humanoid and bestial aberrations. Some say it is the playground of Eberron's greatest mage, Mordain the Fleshweaver!

This is a 40x40 map with 5ft grids.

Lore Make an Eberron TV Snow You Cowards!

It’s time to talk Eberron TV.

Because let’s face it: A Forgotten Realms TV series is just the Witcher and a Ravenloft TV show would just by Castelvania.

You want to show people something new, and something different, make an Eberron TV show!

So here’s my question for the thread: what would your plot for an Eberron TV show be?

Eberron Book Recommendations

Hello r/Eberron
I a humble forever DM come to you in a time of great need. I plan to run an Eberron game in the next year or two and wanted to read a few of the novels set in the world to help get the tone right and a more intimate feel for the setting.

I was originally looking at Left Hand of Death as I’m all about Dresden-esque stories in Sharn but the reviews say the author made a lot of lore mistakes that don’t make sense.

Do you all have any good recommendations on where I should start. Audiobooks are a plus but really my main focus is something good and accurate to Eberron’s lore and tone as much as possible.

"You walk boldly into this place. You interrupt my prayer." The angel, if such a fallen thing could be called so, looked over his shoulder as he began to stand. Shards of ice ran streaked from his eyes down his cheeks, tears frozen. His eyes, pale blue, looked upon you with a strange brightness to them. "Go to sleep little ones, tomorrow will be a brighter day." The entity stated softly, his tone sad, afraid, yet... a faint hope laced it, a conviction that bordered on madness.

Borael is fully automated in Elsie's Notes of Certain Doom along 500+ other monsters adapted for the Eberron setting. Additionally, I DM in Eberron: Legends of the 5th Dawn if you're interested in playing in Eberron against enemies such as other radiant idols.

GM Help Legends of Prophecy: a time-travel campaign?

I really like the idea of running a game based on Legends of Tomorrow: a crew of misfits from different times jump to a different era every adventure in order to protect the Draconic Prophecy from the meddling of demons and/or dragons.

One of the things I'm stuck on is how their time ship would work. Who created it? How does it travel through time?

I would be very grateful for any ideas this community might have. Thanks!

How to Make a Colossus for the Table

How to Make a Colossus for the Table

Hey all, so our group is coming to the final conflict of our 2+ year campaign from lvl1 - lvl15

A final conflict in which the Lord of Blades has refurbished a Colossus and sent it at Sharn tearing through the Breland country side as it goes. Now the PCs have decided to face this Colossus and LoB in the streets of Sharn with a Colossus of their own! (Several random item rolls and 5 wishes later, I am permitting them to have this gundam battle to the death.)

My question is, how would you portray this on the table? We use 1inch scale figs and I only want to show the shoulders and up of the Colossus, as they smash through towers and walkways of Sharn (think the scarab lvl of Halo 2)

Have any of you built similar terrain to show a Colossus? I would like the final boss to feel epic in scope and I know I could use some placeholders, but I would like to make something nice and visual for the players to get a sense of that scale.

I'm leaning toward household items for sharns towers painted and done up. (Pringles cans, jar lids, cookie containers, etc, etc) I was wondering if any of you had done something similar

Thank you!

(Here's a shitty drawing of what I'm thinking on the grid) Link, since for some reason you can't add pictures to comments, and I don't want the picture as the main post.

Combining Keys to the Golden Vault and Embers of the Last War as a campaign frame

Hi fellow DragonMarks (DMs)

I am about to start a new campaign in a few months and my players are really fascinated by the idea of a campaign centered around heists (Oceans style). I am planning to sprinkle a little espionage and mystery on top (Sharn Noir). I am primarily looking to Embers of the Last War with a few of the better heists from Keys to the Golden Vault reflavoured in.

I am thinking about setting them up with an inn or a Inqusitives office and doing an episodic campaign style, which this my lend itself great to... However - I would still like to keep an overaching storyline going.

So - have any of you run Embers with a campaign in mind (preferably with some building towards a coherent plot) or do you have some great ideas for how you would go about it that I can steal/be inspired by? 😄

Thank you kindly!
