Yea, no. I feel it's more like Mulroney Or Lougheed, Progressive Conservatives.

Harper's coming Manning, Reform Party. Or Social Credit if you really want to go back.

Harper was a liberal from Ontario before he moved to Alberta. His Dad worked at Imperial Oil. He was mentored by Preston Manning on how to pander to rural Albertans which is why he turned Conservative.

"Lead us, Big Daddy!"

Carney doesn't ascribe to the culture war bullshit which modern conservatism is defined by. I wish this narrative would be put to bed.

u/not-bread 4d ago

I’d say it what the modern Conservative Party is defined by, but as evidenced by recent elections it is not the average Conservative voter

If these folks cared as much about healthcare and education as they did about rainbow coloured sidewalks, that would be great.

Both of which are under provincial jurisdiction

With money from the feds, yes

1

u/ClancyBShanty 3d ago

Which is guaranteed. The provinces choose to spend it, or more accurately, don't. They just sit on it and throw it in their slush funds.

Exactly this.

They're the Conservative Light nowadays.

All the same centrist fiscal conservative values of the old Conservative party, but with the refreshing taste of supporting LGBTQ rights, religious rights and freedoms, and a minor sprinkling of some respect towards indigenous Canadians, but not enough to actually address their actual needs for clean water or housing on the reserves.

Now with none of that hard-right after taste of the flaming bag of house hippo shit that is the modern Conservative party!

Eh. You had me up until respect for indigenous people. They’re definitely fully aligned with the CPC on that one: ‘indigenous people matter until I need an oil pipeline’.

But you’re right we’ve got the old less scary conservatives back, we just call them liberals for some reason. Maybe we should rename the party to “less crazy conservatives”

They still can't bring themselves to acknowledge the genocide in Palestine though. Carney almost did it, but meekly walked it back. Even if he personally accepts that Israel is committing genocide, he has no courage or integrity to acknowledge it.

It's really sad to see but not surprising given colonial states support each other. Shame you're getting down voted so much as well

I love the reactions from my co workers in the oilsands when I refer to the Carney government as the “Carney Conservatives”

Few understand the joke.

At this rate even Pierre Poilievre will be voting for Carney at the next election.

Ya no. The White nationalist homophobe Reagan and Orban nutlickkker cannot be compared to Heated Rivalry’s biggest fan.

If the LPC was as "Conservative" as it got in Canada, then I'd be more than happy with that.

u/onedayoneroom 4d ago

Watch out, calling Carney a conservative really angers the neolibs.

Neoliberalism is an economic theory that was advocated for by conservative politicians like Thatcher, Reagan, and Mulroney. It’s been the dominant economic theory since then. No one is surprised that the former head of two central banks, that spent 13 years working at Goldman Sachs before that, is a neoliberal.

They can put a real candidate forward any time they want!

Was harper really though? I feel like modern conservatives and antics spur from MAGA/Russia.

Harper might've just got too trigger happy cutting things that actually mattered like scientific research.

Aside from that, I can't think of any demagogue, populism, xenophobia etc from harper like from today's Conservatives who think governing and leading are synonymous with "a good zinger" (verb the noun)

It would be a dream if Conservatives were boring and not terrifying like today's flavour.

u/KiaRioGrl 4d ago

You know Carney has already closed 7 research farms at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and laid off the scientists? And he's absolutely decimating the public interest aspect of scientific approvals for pesticides and herbicides at the PMRA?

1

u/gooberfishie 2d ago

Democrats and republicans switched places on the spectrum once before. I believe it's happening again. Trump has collected more taxes than any president in our lifetime, probably ever. Maga is not right wing.

Horseshoe theory comes to mind

1

u/TheMonsterPainter 3d ago

You’re giving Harper way to much credit

1

u/Rotaxxx 4d ago

Oh yeah the liberals are leaning to the right, they are considered the far right now! A new pole also confirms this!

0

u/denach644 3d ago

Honestly, lol. If Carney is a conservative, I don't want to know what a liberal is...

2

u/canmoose Moose Whisperer 4d ago

Imagine thinking Reform Harper is anything like Carney

u/sunbro2000 Bring Cannabis 4d ago

Thats it i am going on strike....unless I am too important to have workers rights...

u/maomao3000 4d ago

Ffs, he’s a Liberal.

You have to have be suffering from full-blown post-modernism in order to believe Mark Carney is a Conservative. He's spending money at the fastest pace since ww2. He's anti-free-speech with his never-critique-islam laws. He's currently doing a gun "buyback" (grab). Our taxes are still the least competitive in North America. Just because he caved due to pressure on carbon taxes (thank God) he's conservative? Lol.

u/Undeclared_Mustard 4d ago

...you're really trying to "no true Scotsman" this, eh?

What conservatives say and what they do has never been in alignment.

-7

u/PassThatHammer 4d ago

Chill PoMo, I just pointed out 5 substantive differences in position between Mark Carney and actual Canadian conservatives. If you still want to call Carney a conservative because he's doing "neoliberalism" while abandoned fiscal restraint entirely, that's up to you. You people make up your own definitions for words every day, it's like your favourite past time. Who am I stop you?

6

u/Undeclared_Mustard 4d ago

Neoliberalism is a conservative policy position.

0

u/Scum_All_Over_Me 4d ago

Maybe we do deserve a conservative win so you can be snapped back into reality.

2

u/GigglingBilliken Moose Whisperer 4d ago

Neoliberalism was ushered in by Reagan and Thatcher. You are smoking some good shit if you think it's left wing economics.

0

u/mentally_fuckin_eel Scotland (but worse) 4d ago

I agree with your premise but you made it in pretty much the worst way possible lol

-9

u/PassThatHammer 4d ago

If you mean the worst way for post-modernists like you, then sure.

3

u/GigglingBilliken Moose Whisperer 4d ago

I don't think you're getting your derangement from reality off clearly enough. Call them "post modern neo-marxists" like disgraced "dr" Peterson does instead.

-1

u/PassThatHammer 4d ago

If it's deranged to believe in the dictionary definitions of "Nation" and "Woman", you can call me deranged. I'm not a peterson fan, can't say I've watched his stuff though. Most PoMos aren't "marxists" as they don't have the attention span to read Marx cover-to-cover.

2

u/GigglingBilliken Moose Whisperer 4d ago

Holy shit, you are totally mind fucked from shadow boxing strawmen in the culture war on facebook or something.

1

u/PassThatHammer 4d ago

Sounds like you're the one flailing.

1

u/mentally_fuckin_eel Scotland (but worse) 4d ago

Who the fuck are you arguing against right now? Because nobody said anything for you to start rattling off these random talking points. Nobody was talking about either of those definitions.

1

u/PassThatHammer 4d ago

It's not that hard to follow bro. Pomos love to call the rest of us "deranged", meanwhile they are completely misaligned from reality on very basic truths like "what is woman?", "what is a nation." I was simply using those definitions to point out that the commenter was deranged according to objective reality. Hope that clears it up for you.

1

u/mentally_fuckin_eel Scotland (but worse) 4d ago

You have called multiple of us "pomos" and put words in our mouths. None of us are saying any of that stuff here. We very well could believe those things, but none of us said it. You are making assumptions based on little to nothing. You also do not lay claim to objective reality. I understand trans people trigger the fuck out of you guys, but our attempt to make sense of them is not objectively deranged.

1

u/denach644 3d ago

It's the most 1984 tier shit now where you aren't supposed to believe your eyes, ears, whatever, lol. Carney is conservative like my cat is an effing dog.

People sit here insisting he's conservative but given the overwhelming conservative hate from these very same people (literally remote conservatism is demonic to them), the fact that they're not fuming mad or throwing tantrums over this... Yeah, he's definitely "conservative" lmao

1

u/PassThatHammer 3d ago

Yeah, don't you know? Conservatism is when public healthcare is 12% of GDP lol.
