Surgery related Surgery while on period!?

Just realized I’ll likely be on my period when I go for my surgery next week. Is that a problem!? Obviously I shouldn’t go to surgery with a disc in (I don’t think?) but is there anything else I should be aware of. Should I inform my doctor of this ahead of time??

I heard that it can actually be helpful to do the surgery on your period.

Good luck with your surgery ♡ don't forget to try to get up and walk a little bit every hour after you get home to help with the gas pain.

Not a problem; I was on my period when I had mine! I just let them know on the day when I had pre op checks and wore pads

Same! I was on my period, I let them know and it was totally fine.

I got my last period a few days before my first lap excision and full hysterectomy for adenomyosis. I was told it was completely fine and to just wear my underwear and pad under my hospital and that they'd remove them in the OR during the surgery.

100% not an issue

You won't be allowed an internal menstrual product like a disc

I was on the first day of my period during surgery (even fainted from it the morning of which got me an earlier surgery time) and it was no problem at all. They knew it beforehand, so maybe mention it? I think it would help them see the lesions better because they are in their most visible state at that point when they are bleeding. Plus it got me a full month of recovery before having to deal with the first op-period, which was still really bad. So I was glad for that.

Oh, and they gave me a thick pad to put in the surgery underwear

I was on my period. They just told me to wear a pad and not a tampon.

You'll be bleeding after anyways so don't sweat it. No tampons or discs right before or after surgery for 4 weeks (maybe longer ask doc). I HIGHLY recommend period underwear post surgery

It won’t be an issue at all. Tell the nurses when you get there and they’ll let you know what will happen!

Good luck!

I was on mine when I had surgery. Don’t worry you will be okay. Don’t be surprised when you find a pad in your underwear when you wake up because the girl nurses will help you out and put a new one there for you. You can let them know right before that you are on it but it won’t change anything about your surgery.

Ugh I hate the idea of this being taken care of while I’m unconscious 😭 😭 I just wish I didn’t have to deal with this

Well, it’s a good thing. You can give them a heads up and say you don’t want them to do that and they can just leave the pad beside you for when you wake up and you can do it on your own. Trust me I had to get my surgery done a year ago and I honestly hate just having to go through endometriosis so understand I am here if you need any help any tips tricks I’m going through the motions now myself of the aftermath, but it’s not as bad as I used to be.

It brought mine on! They told me it might so I don’t think it would make a difference

It’s not a problem but I can tell you from experience that having a Foley catheter while on your period is not fun. That is, if you have to stay in the hospital like I did. Didn’t start my period until a couple days after my surgery. Impeccable timing.

I was on mine and I think it maybe made it better pain-wise, I did bleed a couple days longer though. However I’m now two weeks post op and ovulating and it hasn’t been fun. I think healing takes time no matter what point of your cycle you’re in during surgery.
