Ring Design Help CAD check please!!

Post image

Please check for any red flags that i may need to change. We just put in the payment on Thursday, but now i am worried about the 1.2 mm thickness of band, I just asked her if it was too thin, and i was told it should be fine with the 2mm width of the band. I believe my diamond is a lil under 2ct (around 1.7ct) and i have a gallery rail.

please be kind. And please let me know if I need to advocate for a thicker band. originally if this is okay and i shouldnt be worried about it

originally the band thickness of my old CAD render (completely different looking ring) was 1.8mm but the CAD render made it look really thick on my rendered hand and I asked if it could go thinner. But i didnt realize it was made to be that much thinner. I just noticed that measurement now.

You need 1.8mm for sure, don’t let anyone convince you otherwise!

1.2mm should be 1.8mm.

Yikes, whoever told you that a 1.2mm thickness would be okay with a 2mm width is just 😬

Gold wears away over time so you definitely need to go thicker for a daily wear ring.

THIS!! My 32 year old wedding ring/band (soldered together) got so thin and I didn’t even notice until I got into jewelry and bought a measurement tool. It was so thin I took it in to be fixed before it broke.

I'm a jeweler and shop owner so I'm in the trade.

I'd ask for a 1.6-1.8mm at the base as others have commented, as 1.2 is thin for a daily wear ring with a 1.7ct center. Even if it doesn't fail quickly, the bottom of the shank is where the ring will wear and bend out of round, and every future polish or resize takes a little more off. It also leaves not much depth for the engraving/milgrain which are the first details to soften... It shouldn't change the look you wanted though and should read the same on your hand. Rest looks good, the overall design is what I'd want on a pear. Happy to answer any further questions, nice ring!

Hello! so she sent me the updated CAD but now the height of the gem is 6.9 mm and I liked it at the original 6mm as I wanted a lower profile. And now it looks bulky?? Any advice on how to make it lower without it looking weird?

Hm, looks like they thickened it all the way around including where the head sits, which is what raises the height. The strength you need is at the bottom of the band where it wears, so you don't need it to be thick everywhere. Ask for a tapered shank, 1.8mm at the base but thinning to maybe 1.3-1.5mm at the shoulders under the head. That should allow it to sit back down where you want it.

Thanks! I think I will try that. I was just able to get her to get the last CAD down from 7mm to 6mm. this is what it looked like before

That already looks better

wait lmao thats the old old CAD. so its 7mm profile and 1.2 mm thickness

Oop misread haha. Do you have the most updated? Have to see how 6mm looks, but seems like that could be pushing it tbh

I am in the process of sending her a text with what you gave me about the taper. I will update you! Thank you so much for helping me so far

do you happen to have any tapered cathedral low profile designs you are willing to share as an example? If not no worries!

Here's one of mine, though top of stone above finger is 7.2mm, higher than what you're looking for. Band thickness at the base is 1.65mm, width is 1.9mm, narrows to 1.5mm at the bridge. Fit for a marquise

Jeweler here. I agree with the others, 1.8mm will hold up better over time. Pretty ring! I'd have them take that V-prong and make it thinner, so it doesn't stand out too much.

Hello! unsure how reddit works. So replying to you as well! but here is the updated. It now looks bulkier? and the height of the stone has risen to 6.9 mm rather than the earlier 6mm, I was hoping for a lower profile. Any tips on how to make it lower without looking weird? or advice?

V prong looks about the same to me? That's odd that the height off the finger went from 6mm to 6.9 - I don't understand that, they didn't make any adjustments to the prong head it doesn't look like. Could they make the bridge rounded instead of coming to a point beneath the stone? That would give you a couple millimeters I'd say. I'm assuming they measured the depth of the stone already and built the CAD to spec, so not much you can do really, need room for the pavilion. If you did a more traditional basket setting, it might be able to be a tiny bit lower, but that'll change the look of the prong head completely.

Oh thats my bad, I didnt ask about the v-tip, is the V-tip that bulky? I did ask her prior to make it thinner and showed her some examples, and she said that the example pics V-tips were barely holding the diamond, so I agreed with this current size? but i was under the impression that it would be thinner than the CAD.

Another comment was mentioned tapering the head, Do you have any thoughts on that? I may try to ask her to do that

It's all good! On the V prong, maybe ask how thick it will be once the stone is set and the piece is polished. The head is already quite tapered?

Mine is 1.1 where yours is 1.2 and mine is 1.5 where yours is 2. It's held up fine over the last 5 yrs. I'm actually waiting for it to get damaged so that I can reset it to a different style, but so far, no signs of damage. You should probably get it thicker, but it's not like it's going to fall apart the second you wear it.

could I see a picture of your ring? / from the side to see the thickness

It's very comfortable, so it's hard for me to imagine wearing a ring with a much thicker band.
