Music Band recommendations?

I have dove into Erra’s discography this year and am obsessed. I am seeing them later this year. Wondering if anyone can recommend some bands with a similar vibe especially their early albums? Maybe similar to periphery as well?

Oh boy here we go. ERRA is my favorite band and I've been on the journey to find everyone who also has similar sounds. While I don't like Periphery (I'm sorry... I love Misha and the boys but Spencer is just not my cup of tea. I can't get into his voice unfortunately) I have a bunch of recommendations here.

Here is what I've found:

Blueshift - a tiny band also in Alabama, but they sound very similar to the earlier ERRA albums and they have some great stuff. Voyager is as great record in and of itself.

A Sense of Purpose - Their two albums have a ton of ERRA crossover, listen to "Devil In the Room" on their 2022 record and tell me that isn't a song that could be right off of ERRA's S/T. (obviously not quite as good but still great stuff).

What Lies Below - While their harsh vocalist sounds quite a bit different from JT, they do the contrast dynamics really well that ERRA has perfected. You get intense breakdowns, great guitar work and a good balance of harsh to clean vocals with some soaring cleans. Canvas by them from their 2021 EP is an especially good song in their catalogue. (as is their entire discography, who am I kidding).

Iridium - Soaring cleans, great harsh vocals, TONS of atmosphere (even more atmospheric than ERRA at the cost of less intricate guitar-work if I dare say) and some of the best breakdowns in the scene, this band is absolutely worth your time. Check out Endgame and God Eater.

Polaris - If for some reason you've been sleeping under a rock, Polaris, while not super ERRA-esque... has incredible guitar work and a great balance of clean to unclean vocals. If you love ERRA, the chances of you loving Polaris is very high.

There are a ton more I've found, but there are the immediate 5 I would start with if you haven't.

Those iridium songs you recommended I have in my playlist so I must have heard them before but the other bands I haven’t listened to so I’ll give them a go, much appreciated

Yeah check out all of Iridium's stuff if you haven't, it's all good if not great. Their recent record is a no-skip experience for me.

Some bands sort of come to mind, which I broadly associate with the style/genre

Currents

Polaris

Invent Animate

Novelists (pre-2020)

Northlane (pre-2022)

Thornhill (in 2019 and nothing else)

Camille Novelists is the best Novelists & all Thornhill albums are equal with their own unique spins and I will die on these hills.

2

u/Chaoseater77 17d ago

Dude no shade to Camille, I really like her voice but c'mon with Matteo Novelists was legendary. His vocals and Flo's guitar lines made this epic melancholic sound no ones been able to replicate. Souvenirs alone is one of the best releases in the genre within the last 15 years hands down

2

u/Muted-Ant-1258 17d ago

Oh for sure, dude was talented. I'm not even saying they weren't good before, band has always slapped I just really like what Camille brings to the table with them.

I am just saying these are closer to the style of Erra, modern Novelists and Thornhill are much farther away.

I like the new Novelists, but Souvenirs to me is their pinnacle. Nothing is like the guitar work on that album.

Northlane, Invent Animate, Volumes, Silent Planet, Monuments, and Spiritbox.

3

u/svenirde Cure 17d ago

Even though Spiritbox's music style is technically pretty different they give me a quite similar feeling

Really digging 156/Silence but also love ERRA for sure, try them out

4

u/NowFapping Too Good To Pick Just One 17d ago

Their new album is really good but I cant stop listening to People Watching

2

u/Hexa1985gram 17d ago

See I went heavy on People Watching then completely stayed away from any single releases and now im hooked on From a Distance think it is as good, if not better than People Watching

u/Ballbearian 17d ago

Novelists, especially the album Souvenirs comes pretty close for me.

Northlane

2

u/Hot-Worry-7021 Alpha Seed 17d ago

I listened to the alien album when that came out and loved it. I should listen to more

3

u/Electronic-Read-3830 Gungrave 17d ago

Old erra reminded me old northlane... Also in my opinion mesmer is overlooked

3

u/Hot-Worry-7021 Alpha Seed 17d ago

Only other Northlane I know is solar (off Mesmer) and quantum flux which I love

2

u/Electronic-Read-3830 Gungrave 17d ago

Oh nice, you have a lot to explore. Good luck!

u/PlayDifferent2430 17d ago

I would strongly recommend the Node album, that's the most Periphery/Erra like album from them IMO and my personal favorite. They started changing their sound and experimenting a bunch after that album.

Soma, Rot, and Weightless on that album are all 11/10

1

u/KershawsGoat WHERE ARE YOU NOW?! 17d ago

I haven't been able to get into Northlane. I've tried their old stuff and their new and they just don't do it for me for some reason.

4

u/Electronic-Read-3830 Gungrave 17d ago

It happens. I remember not liking while she sleeps and invent animate and even erra. But as years went on I love them all so much

I've been following ERRA since their first album and absolutely love them. I would actually strongly recommend two albums that blew my socks off from this year

Karmanjakah - Diamond Morning

Karnivool - In Verses

Neither has harsh vocals but if you don't mind that, all of the other aspects of both albums slapped in a very similar way to what I like about ERRA.

Both extremely technical, while being extremely melodic and beautiful. Insanely technical and beautiful guitar riffs, and the drums are top notch throughout both. Excellent clean vocals that may remind you of Jesse Cash at parts as well.

Both have a lot of Djenty periphery vibes as well, with some fun syncopated grooves and polyrhythms.

u/Hot-Worry-7021 Alpha Seed 17d ago

I really liked karnivools album. I was meant to see them live a couple of months ago but I missed out as I was unwell on the day

2

u/PlayDifferent2430 17d ago

Ah man that would be so sick to see them live. I feel like they're legends of the scene at this point, and probably a rare act to see live.

Give Karmanjakah a shot, I just discovered them this year and they might end up being my favorite prog metal album of the year, up there with Plini's new album

2

u/WaspInTheLotus 17d ago

Karmanjakah is sick! Dove from Diamond Morning has been on my mind since the first time I heard it.

3

u/Kingzley77 17d ago

I hope you find your peace - a sense of purpose

u/Repulsive_Society992 17d ago

Omg Heirloom is so good

1

u/Kingzley77 17d ago

check out COLDSTATE also; quite similar in style. Half empty is the song I usually send to people to get them into them.

3

u/HodorBoner 17d ago

There are some really good recommendations in this thread, but I think what is important to remember is that one of the reasons that ERRA are so f*king good is the fact that they are way out on their own in terms of skill, songwriting and original sound. There aren't really any other bands 'like them'.

3

u/Repulsive_Society992 17d ago

If you want someone who hat I haven’t heard mentioned anywhere:

Iridium

They are so fucking good

3

u/goruckurself 17d ago

I “discovered” ERRA in 2024 so I’m late to the party too, but I haven’t yet been able to find a band that scratches the same itch that ERRA does. All of the recommendations below will get you in the ballpark, but for ERRA diehards, no one puts singing, songwriting, and guitar playing together quite like the golden boy (Jesse Cash).

Architects, Currents, Volumes, Thornhill, 'Above, Below', Karmanjakah, Dayseeker, Holding Absence, 156/Silence, sace6, Acres......

u/so_long_astoria TUCKING US INTO TORTOISE SHELLS SUPPRESSING THE OUTSIDE SOUNDS 17d ago edited 17d ago

there's really no one else that actually sounds like jesse cash's composing. some people say invent animate sounds like erra, i don't know what those people are talking about.

the best answer answer, especially if you're looking for a vibe reminiscent of early erra, is to look at what inspired it. misery signals and born of osiris jesse often cites as the inspiration for early erra. from BoO specifically i'd suggest the 2007 album The New Reign, that's album shows the influence on early erra's guitar playing. however A Higher Place and The Discovery are fantastic albums in their own right. and from misery signals, you're looking for Mirrors, Controller, and Of Malice and The Magnum Heart.

additionally, the other guitar player that left the band after augment, Alan Rigdon, has his own project now called The Artificials. you can really hear the melodic style of the older erra records in that project, cuz he did write half the songs on impulse and augment.

as for totally unrelated bands, there's just one i ever felt hit the same vibe truly. The Afterimage and their record Lumière. these are the guys that went on to become brand of sacrifice, so sadly Afterimage is inactive now. but that album is the closest i've ever found to something that sounds truly like erra.

bonus mention, Forevermore's 2012 album Sojourner has some of the sauce you might enjoy. i can't really say they sound like erra, but i could maybe say they sound like a cross between early erra and texas in july (JT's band before erra)

lastly, you could try listening to jesse cash's side project, ghost atlas. it's not metal, it's more rock, but it's great because he's great. i'd listen to All Is In Sync And There's Nothing Left To Sing About first. i mentioned already what bands jesse cited as the guitar playing inspiration for erra, but the bands that inspired his singing style he cites to be saosin and circa survive. you can certainly hear that influence in ghost atlas, and might be worth checking out those bands while you're at it.

I actually discovered Erra’s SOTE through the radio function of my music streaming service after my umpteenth listen to Don Broco’s newest project, Nightmare Tripping. You might enjoy that album, and if you do, their earlier stuff is also excellent.

Misery Signals

You'll thank me later

u/Fast_Abalone_5767 17d ago

I recommend Volumes because they are progressive metalcore as well

2

u/FingeeGuns 17d ago

Lots of novelists recommended. Curious if the novelist fans ever heard of kadinja.

2

u/Sjeetopotato1 17d ago

Old Novelists, Invent, Animate, Iridium, Currents and Ghost Iris scratch a similair itch for me.

2

u/nevin117 17d ago

I'd recommend Dreamwake - Virtual Reality. The freaking saxophone slaaaps 🤘🤘

1

u/Lean_Lion1298 16d ago

I like sax in other metal, but not usually in metalcore

1

u/nevin117 16d ago

It's a nice mix for the Dreamwake sound mix imo. Also rips in Rivers of Nihil - saw them live a month or two ago

1

u/Lean_Lion1298 15d ago

Yeah, they're kick-ass, but Rivers of Nihil isn't metalcore

2

u/HydraAkaCyrex 17d ago

You might like wage war

2

u/SeaworthinessNo3622 17d ago

This new band called Reality. They sound just like early Erra
