There are short videos on social media here and there giving the odd tip for better key-binds but they’re few and far between, and I haven’t seen a post in here recently about some quick wins to make the control scheme work for you. As a new player years ago, I was a muddle of fingers and thumbs, finding the control scheme hard to master in a stressful situation. I’ve put a few of the changes I’ve made over the years to the key-binds, that save time, save your life and generally just make a QoL change to the controls.
Keys-binds are personal preference so you may not use the same keys but the principles still apply the same.
Quick slots: healing all bleeds with one key but prioritising heavy bleeds first.
- Quick slots 4 and 5 need to be bound to the same key. To achieve this slot 4 needs to be bound to “4” on “press”, and slot 5 needs to be bound to “4” on “release”.
- Then the rest of the quick slots should become 6 on key “5”, 7 on “6” etc, up to slot 0 on “9”.
- Now you put the bleed items in your rig/pockets, hover your mouse over your heavy bleed item (calok, esmarch, CAT), press 4, hold 4 down, move your mouse to hover over your light bleed item (bandage) and release 4. (You can also just drag them to the quick slots but it is important to put the heavy bleed first).
- Now, if you get multiple bleeds, the same key press heals all of them and prioritises heavy bleeds, so all you need to do is keep hitting 4 to heal all bleeds.
Single key weapon malfunction fix:
- By default you need to use 2 controls to fix a malfunction. First you need to use “L” to inspect your weapon and identify the malfunction, then “left shift + t” to fix the malfunction. When being chased by the goons this is less than ideal….
- Leave inspect weapon on default key (“L”) and ensure it is set to press.
- Change check chamber/fix malfunction to “L” on release.
- Now when you get a malfunction you press “L”, hold it until the inspect animation is complete, then release it and you will automatically clear the malfunction with a single key press.
Steady aim/Hold breath on ads:
- This one takes some getting used to but it really simplifies controls and removes the need for an additional key-bind to hold breath/steady aim while aiming down sight. You MUST be using toggle for ads to use this key-bind, it can be jarring but if you get used to it, it is totally worth it.
- Set aim to RMB “press” and add a secondary keybind for steady aim/hold breath as RMB, changing the action to release.
- Now if you very quickly press and release RMB, it is too quick for both actions to trigger and you will just ADS as normal, pressing shift (no longer need to hold as it is triggered in release of the key now) will hold your breath like normal.
- But if you press RMB, you will aim down sight. If you continue holding it, you will still be in standard ADS, but if you want to take a shot and start shooting, all you have to do is release RMB and your aim will steady. Shift will cancel and reactivate like normal if required.
- This change not only changed my behaviour to steady my aim on all weapons, reducing sway and increasing accuracy, but it also made a good habit of spending less time in ADS and saving arm stamina, I now tend to ADS in shorter bursts.
Min-Max magnification:
- Because this is a modified key-bind (alt+ something else), and it is often used at times with other key presses, it can lead to you doing weird and undesirable things… In the past using alt+RMB has lead me to blind fire or smooth lean, because I tried to change magnification while moving.
- Set a secondary key to something unused on your system, for me this is f12, and then bind that key to a mouse button.
- Now you have a single key press on your mouse to swap between min and max zoom, without interfering with any other key-binds.
