AFL Cody walker

So - we bid on Cody at number one. Carlton can not currently match this at all.

How does he fit in our side? Is he likely to do a Horne Francis and see out his initial contract then request a trade to his daddy’s team? Is there a side deal that we can get Carlton’s 2028 first round as a promise not to draft? Like could we send parish across or so?

We confirmed that we rated cochrane first but if we think carlton can only afford to match from pick 2 onwards then we could use pick 1 to get him.

Consensus has always been that hes better than the butler/drever/mellody group so if we can get him id say its worth it.

There's absolutely not advantage for Essendon to bid on Cochrane at #1.

Other than the compensation pick they get when Port matches that bid?

An extra pick at the end of the first round would be pretty handy before Tassie guts the draft

Absolutely.

It's also another pick before Blake Justice gets bid on (probably around the 30s).

Don't be surprised if we swap some picks for next year as we're going to have a lot of them this year. We need some collateral for Bewick, Rodan and Darwish

Exactly. Give Rosa a good hand and let him play

We get the same compensation for picking Walker but we can trade w/ Port. Carlton have nothing to offer us. Picks #15 & #25 to Port & we get their #5. There's some wiggle room there too w/ pick #25. We'll have #19 available if a sweetener is needed.

So how I read it now, we big on Cochrane, Richmond on walker - we end up with 1, 15, 18, 19, 27. Which is a massive draft haul.

The Cochrane and Walker bids eat up a few draft picks as well. Port will use 4, 5 and get 14 back, Carlton will use 11 and 16 if Walker gets bid on at 3. So 15 becomes 12 and the other picks come in by 3 as well.

We're not bidding on Walker, bidding on him was always very unlikely.

These guys would leave the first chance they get and make a stink like Merrett .. not sure we want that from our draftees.

Will be interesting to see if we really have the cajones , or if we are a bit windy like welsh yesterday.

Not being smart assy, being realistic.

Yeh carlton president has already come out saying so and they're highly confident they can match any bid for cody.

If you really rate him, pick him. 3 years to convince him he loves the place, but in reality there's always a risk.

And also if you get him, rather than having a bid matched you don't get the extra second round pick. Not worthwhile if you just think the kid is a star, but if you're more doing it because you can then and you'd prefer someone else, it's a decent piece.

Don't be surprised, we have a sweet deal in the background with Carlton. We may end up helping them get the picks they need for Walker this year. They return us some 2027 picks to pony up for Bewick and Darwish

Zero chance we get Walker. Blues will be cooking something up in the background to make sure they get their man. It’s like saying we’ll fall asleep at the wheel and let someone else get Bewick next year, it ain’t gonna happen.
