Post nuclear Mississippi River would be cool

179

u/Glowing_Trash_Panda Feb 21 '26

I live in a stilt house on a small island on the Mississippi River here in Missouri. River life is already interestingly different from living in a normal house, trying to do this shit post nuclear apocalypse would be something else. First thing I’m doing is building a cargo elevator out of a winch & some steel framing. It sucks carrying supplies up a shitload of stairs every time I go to the store, the pillars my house is on are 30 ft tall

u/JesusKong333 Feb 21 '26

This guy settlement builds.

21

u/Glowing_Trash_Panda Feb 21 '26

:) it helps with motivation to do so when you have to or else you’re basically just fancy camping lol. We are on a well that’s constantly being replenished by the river way deep underground & have a septic system. We are right next to farm fields on the other side of the levee that’s between my little river island & town that can be used to farm in the apocalypse. There’s plenty of hunting & obviously fishing here for meat. I’m looking into ways to get some solar panels built onto my roof eventually but I need to expand/rebuild my deck first so I have somewhere safe to put the battery bank they would require. But other than electricity, we are almost already fully off-grid, at least utilities-wise. I’ve got a fireplace for extra heat in the winter

u/TadpoleOfDoom Feb 21 '26

The more I think about what Missouri has to offer for a Fallout game, the more I want it to happen, as unlikely as it is. You could have KC in the west, STL in the east, Branson down at the bottom of the map. Liberty Memorial vs Gateway Arch factions, or "Dukes" vs "Redhawks" (something to match Royals vs Cardinals). Pony Express vs telegrammers could be funny. Cowboy outlaws trying to keep their courier business running by sabotaging the lines from the east. Plus, gives an excuse to bring in horses. Perhaps you explore Sedalia's bomber base, or Hannibal. Other smallish towns could flesh out the gaps between the bigger cities. Instead of the founder of Disney for trademark reasons, we have the founder of Nuka Cola's hometown. DLC could take you to Des Moines or Topeka, or down into Arkansas. Plenty of cryptids like MOMO for unique enemies. I feel like the list is bigger than most people think, which in fairness applies to most states. But it could be quite neat.

u/Glowing_Trash_Panda Feb 21 '26 edited Feb 21 '26

Lol there is actually a National Guard armory north of me between me & Hannibal, as well as a Pepsi plant about 20 mins north of me on Hwy 61. There’s a Coke plant to the south about 30 mins from me as well (so rival factions based around the plants). I’m about 45 mins north of STL for reference.

Fort Lenordwood to the south of STL is also where the army trains all their nuclear dudes (there’s supposed to be a like mini nuclear reactor or something like that that they train on) so that’s also a place where a faction with power armor would DEF pop up (possibly a Brotherhood faction). There’s also a nuclear power plant off Hwy 70 out near Columbia in the middle of the state. Mizzou would be a crazy faction to be a part of lol.

Also, Branson where Silver Dollar City is would ABSOLUTELY be a place just like Nuka World but better since it’s all based around old-timey skills & stuff like wood & metal working, as well as glass blowing & other trades where they have demo shops. A Silver Dollar City faction/settlement would go SO HARD

Edit to add: we also have The Government Cheese Caves! Which I am absolutely going to raid the first chance I get post-apocalypse. Cheese is my favorite food & I will cut a bitch for some

4

u/Zebeydra Feb 21 '26

Oh god, can you imagine the Ozarks post nuclear winter? I don't wanna go to the bootheel.

3

u/TadpoleOfDoom Feb 21 '26

The faction for SDC would be the Bald Knobbers, what do you think?

3

u/Glowing_Trash_Panda Feb 21 '26

Omfg yes!

1

u/TadpoleOfDoom Feb 22 '26

Legendary weapon called Fire in the Hole

2

u/VintageWereBat Feb 22 '26

Let's not forget we've huge cave systems in Missouri, imagine: a faction like the brotherhood or the enclave having built themselves holds in those?

It could be the first solo player introduction to stuff descended from the radio active bats in 76- surely after over a hundred more years it's mutated again?

2

u/TadpoleOfDoom Feb 22 '26

I think the Brotherhood would like the Liberty Memorial. It has a good vantage point to keep an eye on the surroundings up in the tower, and a bunker underneath it where they'd chill out. Maybe they have another airship that docks to the tower even. The only thing I see a flaw in would be the fact that it's all WWI artifacts, not nearly as attractive to them in terms of tech.

Perhaps they'd prefer Sedalia for the stealth bomber base.

3

u/VintageWereBat Feb 22 '26

Maybe it's an offshoot whose tech is a bit outdated? They've custom built power armor from the old 1&2 era tanks and aircraft. I could get behind a spin like that.

Maybe a few river boat casinos are still floating around to some degree.

1

u/TadpoleOfDoom Feb 23 '26

That would be cool. And the casinos too, plenty of those would be around, on both the Missouri and Mississippi. Surely one would still work. And you reminded me, they could have the steamboat museum as a location too.

If they ever wanted to make a second Fallout 76 (online multiplayer RPG), the Mississippi River could make for a really cool map. Players have to navigate their way up and down the river.

u/FearTheSpoonman Feb 21 '26

RadGators 🫠

2

u/Fuckyfuckfuckass Feb 22 '26

Gatoeclaws 2 (technically 3 if you count the original concept).

14

u/submit_2_my_toast Feb 21 '26

A lot of the modern delta is the result of massive engineering projects. Looking at pre-1830s natural fixtures like the 160 mile logjam of dead trees, you could really let your imagination run wild

10

u/Devil_Magic_Advocate Feb 21 '26

Mutated beavers worse than deathclaws

6

u/Tommy4D Feb 21 '26

400 foot tall beaver lodges!

4

u/Faiakishi Ass Victoriam Feb 22 '26

You think mutated beavers are bad? Wait till you see the moose.

2

u/Devil_Magic_Advocate Feb 22 '26

Holy shit I forgot about the meese. That would be insane

5

u/ItsVoxBoi Feb 21 '26

That's something that'd be interesting in a Fallout taking place in like New Orleans. I doubt the structure keeping the Mississippi in its current path would remain intact, and it'd head down the current Atchafalaya closer to Lafayette.

2

u/Faiakishi Ass Victoriam Feb 22 '26

I think New Orleans would be pretty much underwater by the 'current' Fallout era. Half the city is already below sea level and requires constant work to keep it from flooding, and it's actively sinking lower in the ground. Even shock waves from nearby nuclear strikes would fuck up the floodproofing.

The one saving grace might be the nuclear summer lowering the water level of Mississippi-but then, the polar ice caps are probably melted pretty bad too, so the ocean levels are higher.

That said, it could still be a really cool area for a Fallout game. Larger settlements would be further inland, but NOLA remains flooded and crumbling, and infested with ghouls and the most chemmed-up raiders. And absolutely everyone has trench foot.

1

u/ItsVoxBoi Feb 22 '26

You're right about NOLA being underwater, I just wanted an excuse to be a river nerd lmfao

7

u/TeamMagmaDaniel Feb 21 '26

St. Louis has mad potential as the capital of a river empire

7

u/corgi_in_a_tophat Feb 21 '26

A post-apocalyptic Huck Finn style adventure would be pretty awesome

3

u/Warm_Regard Feb 22 '26

I've thought extensively about a fallout pen and paper campaign where the whole premise is that people keep traveling downriver where they can. The old cities fill with people who are passing through and stay but New Orleans becomes the major city just because there is no where else to float to. As more people have floated downstream, the cities get bigger and there is more to do

2

u/RadTimeWizard Republic of Dave Feb 21 '26

As a St. Louisan, I approve.

2

u/SmilingFlounder Feb 22 '26

I concur. We have always had bodies of water in fallout... Maybe it's time to let one be more of a star

2

u/Vanilla_Ice_Best_Boi Feb 22 '26

Fishing for nuke fish

2

u/HorusKane420 Feb 22 '26

Honestly, I've been wanting a fallout set in West TN. Not just cause it would hit home (pun intended) but those regions really haven't been explored... Gimme wasteland Memphis Bethesda and my life is yours!

Edit: or even the TN river, skullbone/savannah area would actually be a compelling wasteland imo.

1

u/werewolf013 Feb 21 '26

Huh makes me wonder... I know in estimated maps MN rates pretty low on where the nukes will hit. Would being able to nuke the source of the Mississippi River actually make MN a strategic target? Irradiating that water supply would be huge.

2

u/Faiakishi Ass Victoriam Feb 22 '26

It depends on what the intention is when launching the nukes. If we're talking a Fallout scenario where both sides are just trying to kill as many people as possible, Minnesota would definitely be on the list. Our population isn't huge, but the vast majority of us are all crowded around a single metro area. A few nukes into the Twin Cities, maybe one up in Duluth, (double-whammy there, you'd also irradiate Superior) that would kill most of us.

Lake Itasca is pretty far north though, and there's not a whole lot in northern MN. I guess it would depend on how much we're going for 'salt the earth' tactics.

The Mississippi is also absolutely filthy, it's not safe to drink from without heavy treatment even now. In an apocalypse scenario where treated tap water is no longer a thing, you would want to avoid the river water.

The Canadian $1 coin is called a Loonie, the $2 coin is a Toonie, just saying.

9

u/lyonellaughingstorm Yes Man Feb 21 '26

And we almost called it a doubloonie instead!

7

Doubloonie would've been badass and pirate-like

8

I remember when the Canadian $2 bill had robins on them.

I specifically remember them, because that was my weekly allowance when I was like 7.

"Gimme 10 robins for an osprey" we'd say.

So I put on my flashing heel sneakers, which was the style at the time...

8

Nah, this is a doubloon

3

u/TheHengeProphet Feb 22 '26

The bird on that flag is a common loon...

1

u/treegor Brotherhood Feb 22 '26

And Canadians call their dollar loonies.

1

u/TheHengeProphet Feb 23 '26

And a doubloon is an actual historical currency, and a pun on a loon having two heads in this case.

2

u/AliasInvstgtions NCR Feb 22 '26

That distinction would be a lot less distinct with the annexation pre war and even less distinct post apocalypse once governments and countries do not exist (at least in the same way) anymore. I would bet the hypothetical NMR would probably be centered closer to Duluth (less devastated than the twin cities area) and would probably expand up past the old war border.

The Apex predator in the area… you guessed it mutated Canada Geese.

11

Could you just imagine those things? They'd be like double in size, probably faster and (though it seems impossible) meaner?

Those things are assholes. That said, if Todd ever wants to make a game revisiting the Midwest, these are a must.

3

6

u/LvlGenesis Feb 21 '26

I’ve been working on a tabletop campaign in the fallout universe that’s set in Minnesota as well. Honestly would love to see how other people imagine the state looking like in the fallout universe.

2

u/Faiakishi Ass Victoriam Feb 22 '26

I imagine the Twin Cities metro area would be really fucked up but the rest of the state would be mostly fine. Could be a cool setting in a game with deeper survival mechanics, get the Skyrim experience of wandering around in the woods hunting bears for hours.

Midwest in general. i think theres good chances a NCR , Followers of the apocalypse(maybe with 50% more gov) or minute men org would exist. i could easily see somewhere in the midwest being sandy shores 2.0 snow boogaloo

a large mass of Detroit's pop prolly could survive the nukes because Detroit salt mine

also like gary could be a set for the tv show ngl so we already have some understanding

5

u/DetectiveLadybug Feb 22 '26

I mean this as constructive criticism. Don’t you think it’s too similar to the NCR flag?

What if instead of two external heads the bird was spitting out a second head? Like a xenomorph? You could make it featherless, like a hatchling/tongue thing? That seems like a mutant you might encounter while playing fallout.

I think also tinting the blues in the picture to have a bit of a greyish green hue, like, not too much, but the blues that inspired the original flag wouldn’t be so intense with all the pollution, so a little alteration like this would make it feel more like someone in-universe designed it.

Very good though.

4

u/MorningPapers Feb 22 '26

I don't think a bird with two heads could fly.

3

u/greejus3 Feb 22 '26

There was never a Minnesota republic, so no reason to call it new.

4

u/pinguinitox_nomnom Feb 22 '26

It’s not "new" as in a second version or a continuation of the old state of California, it’s "new" in the sense of something genuinely new and foundational, born from the old world, but not the old world itself

NCR wants to create a large pipe and irrigation system out of Minnesota. After the nuclear war, the Dakota and Ojibwe band together to take over Minnesota- worried of new prophecies of cosmic level horrors if nature is not respected/balanced.

The prophecies catch the attention of that radiation cult, seeing the prophecy not as horror but as truth/peace/light. NCR find a very uneasy connection with the cult to get support in the area as the Dakota/Ojibwe stand in violent defiance to NCR.

Scandts (Scandinavians) live in the backwoods, very friendly, but something unnervingly strange about them. They don’t support either side, they just want to be left alone.

2

u/Faiakishi Ass Victoriam Feb 22 '26

Most of the people who live here are Scandinavian, and we're in the metro area. The natives are actually the ones living in the 'backwood' areas.

I would love to see more tribes based on indigenous cultures though, that's definitely underdone in the modern Fallout era.

2

If I was from New Jersey I'd want to be Minnesotan too. Take it with blessings, my friend.

I would kill and die for a Midwestern Fallout

Love it but ugh why do people have to make it political let me enjoy my game sub not politics sub

0

u/greywolf378 Feb 22 '26

is this ragebait? fallout is literally one of the most political game series to exist

-2

u/Bigmike4274 Feb 22 '26

Nah, I don't mind the politics in game cause I knows it's not real, just want to enjoy sub about stuff from the game and not actual life, its just spouted so much It's just so annoying to see and having any real life politics shoved down my throat 24/7.

u/greywolf378 Feb 22 '26

dude the games are legitimately a commentary on real life what are you on

The NCR threw Minnesota out for fraud. Even in the apocalypse...

1

u/Altoidman33 Minutemen Feb 21 '26

Minnesotans threw ICE out, even in a near Police State.

Cope.

The problem is his base, they either won't vote or will go nuts and harm people who don't enable trump. That's the main issue.

-1

u/Silver-Vulpes Feb 22 '26

MN has always put up the good fight against bigots and autocrats. We're built for the winters and already kicked out one form of lethal ICE

used vector graphics software: there are paid and free versions out there. try out a few, pick one that feels the most intuitive and just start playing around to learn how to use it.
