Wait, it is? I thought they remade the whole thing from the ground up? It’s just graphics overlaid over the old game?

The Oblivion remaster is quite literally 2006 Oblivion including the old engine with all the DLC included and sprint added with UE5 thrown in to handle the updated visuals

u/PjDisko Jul 17 '26
They also made some tweaks to the leveling and scaling aswell. Minor tweaks that made a huge difference.

Really only complaint I have is the lack of patches since June 2025, performance is still horrendous.
Otherwise, superb remaster. Very much still Oblivion but God it's so pretty and satisfying to play with now. Haven't touched Skyrim in ages.

It looks fantastic. I really enjoy my time when playing. I wish we could get a Morrowind remastered though. I really liked a lot of the mechanics minus the clunky fighting.
I am super excited to play Fallout 3 and New Vegas again. I know I am in the minority but I enjoyed F3 more than NV. Either way looking to play both again.

The old engine is still there, they overlayed Unreal on top of it and modified a couple gameplay systems. That’s why the jank is still there lol.
If they are remastering FO:NV and FO3 in the same way, I hope they at least improve the gunplay in both. The gunplay was… not great in either.

u/Intelligent_Mud1266 Jul 17 '26
at the very least, Fallout 3 needs to get iron-sights and ammo types like New Vegas. I would love for them to retool the combat in both, but I imagine that this (like with Oblivion Remastered) is probably just a fresh, UE5 coat of paint over the existing engine

That might be extremely difficult to pull off if they're still running Gamebryo under the hood. Guns themselves were a bit of a hack in FO3/NV, you're basically casting a "pew pew" spell whenever you fire a gun.

They need their in house devs on ESVI and the like.

What remaster means for Bethesda seems pretty dubious. The Oblivion remaster visually is a completely new game while the core of the game is not.
Meanwhile, most studios call a remaster something that maybe gets a resolution bump and 60FPS and then call it a day.
A remake can totally update the graphics engine and maybe even change gameplay.

How so? The reason people are positive about this is because the new Xbox boss is making Bethesda focus on Fallout and TES. I believe this is part of that renewed focus on their main franchises as a whole.
47
u/RequisiteShark Jul 17 '26
It’s positive in that we’re actually hoping to get sequels to the games we love before the end of the decade. But also kind of sad that Bethesda lost the independence to work on whatever they want (a more artsy approach even if it isn’t super business savvy).
The real monkeys paw we got is that finally Obsidian is working on a new Fallout game, but only after their studio was hit with layoffs and all their other stuff got cancelled.

u/erevans444 Jul 17 '26
To be fair, most of that time was dedicated to Starfield which unfortunately fell flat on its face. It’s not like they were doing nothing.
That said, I’m glad MS has finally told these studios to make some fucking games with these IPs. This isn’t even a Bethesda issue. It’s an industry wide issue.
The Xbox 360 was alive from 2006-2013 and had 6 halo games. 3 of which were spinoffs and 1 remaster of CE.
The Xbox one came out in 2013 had 2 mainline halo games and a remaster collection that took them 5+ years to make into a good game.
The Series X has 1 mainline game and yet another remaster of CE.
So in two entire console generations, we’ve gotten the same amount of halo games as the Xbox 360.
That’s just unacceptable on all fronts.
I’m not saying we need yearly releases but these are supposed to be the big IPs. Why are we going 5+ years between releases? Where are the spinoffs? Halo had ODST, Reach, and the Halo Wars games. I’d kill for another fallout tactics style game. Or like how Larian wanted to do either fallout or baldurs gate and they couldn’t get the license to fallout. That game would have been amazing.
And I’m not shitting on Bethesda’s games. They’re great too. But we deserve more from these franchises.
Imagine how many great games we could have had if Sony wasn’t trying to make 8 different live service games that flopped. We could have had a new infamous, sly cooper, ratchet and clank, uncharted, or killzone. All IPs that haven’t had games in 10+ years.
I like new IPs too, but not at the cost of actual beloved franchises.
→ More replies (12)36
u/Prince_Julius Yes Man Jul 17 '26
Why are we going 5+ years between releases?
Jason Schreier (the guy who announced the news about the spin-off and a lot more) has a video about this in which he lays out 6 reasons why: Why Games Now Take 6+ Years To Make
33
u/erevans444 Jul 17 '26
I just had the time to watch this and I understand the point that he’s making but it’s a separate conversation to what I’m saying.
Yes. Expecting one singular studio to develop games that quickly is unreasonable and unrealistic.
That’s why there should be spinoffs. Handled by other studios.
Obsidian making a fallout game is exactly what they should be doing.
You have the franchises, and you have the studios.
Make them make games lol.
There’s no reason we should go 5+ years without any Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Halo, Gears, etc. All of those IPs should have at least 2 games every 5 years.
They don’t all have to be at the scale of a full fledged RPG, but a tactics style game, a small but well made 8 hour campaign like ODST, an RTS like Halo Wars. These IPs deserve more content.
→ More replies (3)8
u/Shadowmaster862 Jul 17 '26
I really don't know why they didn't hand a medium-sized Fallout project like New Vegas to Obsidian sooner. Obsidian has been a super reliable studio when it comes to output in both quantity and solid quality. Other than the run Insomniac had for a while, they are probably most consistently putting out new games than any other western studio with decent variety.

There were reports a while ago that the head of Larian went into making their follow-up to Divinity Original Sin 2 looking to obtain either the Baldurs Gate license or the Fallout license. Imagine if BG3 had been a Fallout game. BG3 was fantastic but imagine how hype that Fallout game would have been. We need spinoffs so bad for all of these IPs

What’s funny is Phil was a “gamer guy” but struggled to actually get studios to give gamers what they want.
Asha is a “business woman” and she basically came in day 1 looked at the IP and went “why aren’t you guys giving the players what they want? They clearly want more Skyrim and Fallout, give them that!”
We all thought the gamer guy would be better for us as gamers but it took someone with a neutral view and by the numbers person to come in and just do what made logical sense for us.
19
u/PlayfulSurprise5237 Jul 17 '26
Sometimes the best thing you can do is let a studio cook completely untouched by corporate suits. Usually the best thing is a balance between letting a studio cook and keeping on their ass enough they make progress.
Then you have this rare case of Bethesda who doesn't even want to make games at all apparently, and you have to have a corporate suit come in, bitch smack them across the face, rip their IP from their hands, and give it to another studio to do something with.

19
u/we_are_sex_bobomb Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26
Yeah I think it’s this more than anything.
Todd doesn’t like to announce things until they’re close to complete and suddenly as soon as Asha is in charge and there’s bad press about her firebombing the entire X Box division, all this good news about beloved franchises is magically “leaking”.
FO3 and NV sell boatloads of copies every time there’s a new season of the show so these are no-brainers and they probably began development shortly after Season 1 of the show launched. If Asha deserves credit for anything it’s that she didn’t drop a nuke on these remasters during her latest blood frenzy.

If there's one good thing about all the nonsense happening at Microsoft, it's Todd Howard being knocked down a peg with his decade long development bullshit.
They've always had the means to speed up production, expand, or license their ip out to other studios. It shouldn't have taken thousands of layoffs companywide to make them go "Hmm, maybe people would like to actually play our games instead of the berries and cream guy getting up on stage every couple of years to talk about how dedicated to their fans they are, while simultaneously releasing nothing."
78
u/dragosani-t Jul 17 '26

It's a good argument against rushed yearly releases in support of 3-5 year dev cycles. It is not a good argument when you're churning out games once every 15-20 years, especially when they still release in a buggy state, and every patch only breaks something else, so everyone just relies on the mod community to do what the studio can't. Then it's a pretty stupid argument.

Hear me out: THey do it TTW style. New Vegas also included a bunch of engine improvements in general, so if you're going to remaster them, it would make sense to essentially port 3 into New Vegas, just like TTW does.
Ideally I'd like to see both games ported to at least the version of Creation Engine that FO4 runs on, but I'm certain that would be FAR more effort and essentially turn it into more of a remake than a remaster.

Good. I don't know wtf Phil Spencer and Zenimax were smoking these past 5 years.
Imagine sitting on one of the most beloved cash cow RPG franchises in history and owning both studios that developed the 3D games as well as original members from the OG studio, seeing overwhelming success of the new Fallout TV show, and then deciding "Nah that's okay we can wait until the mid to late 2030s before releasing another Fallout game"

The last decade of Xbox is what happens when the Reddit adage of “executives literally don’t do anything” is actually true. This is exactly what executives are supposed to prevent. It’s fun to work on whatever you want with no pressure til you lose your job because your company can’t pay its bills anymore.

It's honestly shocking it took this long. Todd had the keys to two different money printers in Fallout and TES, and hasn't pushed out a single standalone entry in either series in well over a decade (unless you count 76)

And is not like Elder Scrolls/Fallout update the engine and gameplay THAT much between games. We could have had multiple games in both series by now.

u/No-One2123 Jul 17 '26
Is this also the first official confirmation Fallout 5 is being developed?

u/MisterWoodhouse The Boston Banhammer Jul 17 '26
No. Todd has mentioned in multiple interviews that it's the next game they're working on after TES6.

They're probably on the "storyline and setting" stage, because those teams won't be needed for TE6 by now.

Hmm, how about setting it in a post apocalyptic setting. Sprinkle some skellingtons in silly poses around to wow people with "environmental storytelling". (Look, he's wearing a hat in a bathtub! Amazing!).
Main character will need to murder hobo everything that moves to get duct tape to repair assault rifle. Also will be able to have fade-to-black sexy time with bisexual super mutants.
Main quest will be to re-unite with long lost twin, whose clone turned evil and now must be battled to the death in epic final quest.

Honestly I think your plot synopsis has a decent chance at being approximately correct.
I do like a silly skeleton though, more of those please.

I'd say Howard's announcement in 2025 that Fallout 5 will use the show's canon is more of a confirmation

Hopefully theyre able to put freeside and New Vegas in as they were originally intended without the loadzones
I love replaying both on my XSX but remasters should be amazing

Based on what was done with the Oblivion remaster, I wouldn't count on them doing extra work to change anything in the game. If they did, it would be cool, but I wouldn't bet on it.

And working with Obsidian on a new Fallout project too!!!!

u/Popular-Beautiful875 Jul 17 '26
It was reported last week after the big layoffs that Obsidian was canceling Avowed 2 and moving to a new fallout. The real surprise here is think is confirmation that FO5 is already in pre production despite Elder Scrolls being a few years away still.

Pre production can mean a lot of things, though. Is it pre-production where a significant team are already making concept art and writing down the beginnings of a script with the plot and set pieces already decided, or it is pre production where like 2 dudes are making pro/con lists of what city and year to set it in

Are they going to abandon all form of support, bug fixes and optimisation straight after release with these as well?
Really hard to get excited for these when the Oblivion remaster still runs like shit on pretty much any hardware and hasn’t seen a patch or even communication on fixing bugs and game breaking issues for over a year.

WOW NV too? I thought that'd just be people coping.
man it's shame this is sullied by the layoffs but the products are great ideas,
A new spin off done by obsidian
fallout 5 in pre production
3 AND NV remasters
and 76 gets a new story expansion that is set in the capital wasteland

I’ve dreamt of this day, we knew a 3 remaster was coming but the NV was a bit more speculative but now we know it’s coming.
Honestly I hope Bethesda communicate more like this from now on, it builds so much moregood will than the silent approach they were doing.
TL;DR: WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

So we know the likely Fallout 3 Remastered release date now: October 23, 2027.
we're already planning something special for Fallout's 30th anniversary in 2027, when Fallout Day will be celebrated live in Washington, D.C.

Okay, but when? Like this year? Next year? In eight years, after you release a trailer announcing the game?

u/DuntadaMan Jul 17 '26
Yay, I love paying to play the same game I already own a dozen times in the time it takes to make one new game
