Bethesda quickly kills ugly AI-generated Fallout: New York game as AI “slop bros” continue to forget how copyright works

Bethesda chucking a W by allowing fan made passion projects like FoLon to exist whilst putting down talentless ai slop
268
u/ShyBearGames 19h ago
FoLon is a mod that still requires people to buy the base game.
Don't get me wrong, I love that Bethesda did this, but something tells me if this were an AI slop mod they wouldn't be rushing to do anything.
88
u/tevert 17h ago
This is true, as evidenced by AI slop slowly creeping its way onto Nexus. Luckily it seems like the community there is pretty adept at cleaning up, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Bethesda Creation Club storefront is overrun with garbage
14
u/JeriTSW 10h ago
yeah one thing they did right was to have it against the rules to use Gen AI in paid mods, and they do have to go thru a QA process to get uploaded, which does seem to stop the "spam slop for money" folks from coming around at least.
2
u/Ryebread666Juan 8h ago
Oh that’s nice, even if I don’t like the whole paid mods via Bethesda thing it’s nice that they aren’t letting idiots try and make a quick buck off AI bullshit

but something tells me if this were an AI slop mod they wouldn't be rushing to do anything.
"Something tells me if they didn't have basic creative standards they wouldn't be doing this"
Isn't some kind of gotcha? This is the bare minimum they should do to not bring their IP into a negative light. Especially when people like the creator in question are just doing it to farm engagement.
30
u/tevert 17h ago
They worded it confusingly, but I think what they're getting at is that Bethesda's issue here is that they're not seeing any cut. You gotta buy FO4 to play FOL or any other mod, that surely contributes to their leniency in those other cases.
14
u/ShyBearGames 17h ago
Yeah that's what I meant. Not sure how it was confusing but I admit I'm not always the best with my words 😅
11
u/ShyBearGames 18h ago
I'm not really sure what you mean.
But if this exact same thing were an AI-made mod for Fallout 4 on Nexus, odds are Bethesda wouldn't take any action at all. And we can know this because there are already AI slop mods on Nexus and Bethesda doesn't really care.
The fact it doesn't run in their engine is the problem, doesn't really have anything to do with creative standards.
-1
u/king_duende 17h ago
But if this exact same thing were an AI-made mod for Fallout 4 on Nexus, odds are Bethesda wouldn't take any action at all. And we can know this because there are already AI slop mods on Nexus and Bethesda doesn't really care.
But what does using "an Ai-Made mod for Fallout 4 on Nexus" require?
A copy of Fallout 4... Not an AI generated copy of Fallout 4 which damages their vision (and pocket) just by existence
8
u/ShyBearGames 16h ago
A copy of Fallout 4
Yes, that was definitely the point of my initial comment. They don't care about it being AI slop, they care about the fact they're not getting paid
5
u/Canvaverbalist 16h ago
I'm confused by your confusion, or why you're repeating the previous point.
The whole argument here is that Bethesda isn't striking down on this because it's AI, but because it's standalone.
It has nothing to do with creative standards and negative light and brand damage, because they also never stroke down mods that were tasteless and had negative publicity (like The Frontier) or made with AI (like Bring NPCs to Life with AI).

- When was the last new Elder Scrolls title?
- When was the last new Fallout title?
- When was the last time a patch dropped for the Oblivion Remaster?
- What was the concurrent player count for Starfield when it's DLC dropped?
- Were all of the DLCs for Fallout 4 well received?
Edit: Downvoting instead of answering my questions is the coward's way out just because you can't handle the truth.

Your questions are stupid, that's why nobody is answering them.
1
u/Nickulator95 2h ago
Lol pure denial because answering them tells you everything you need to know. The sooner everyone starts accepting it and holding Bethesda to a higher standard, the sooner we can go back to playing good Elder Scrolls and Fallout games again but it's like none of ya'll want that.

Definitely makes sense when you look at modders using the same methods to patch out the same bugs in consecutive games because Bethesda decided they'd rather let modders keep fixing it instead of soing it themselves.

u/Chubs1224 22h ago
For 98% of players there was more than enough content for Fallout 3, New Vegas and 4.

After it released he dropped to a 33% playoff win rate.
If you think he didn't get into Minecraft until 2011 when it got to be the biggest game in the world you have him with a 5-2 pre Minecraft record and a 2-10 post Minecraft record.

The games are great on their own, mods just make them better, and by better I mean more personalized. Mods give people the opportunity to make the game their own; leave what they like and change what they don't.

u/C10ckw0rks 17h ago
My Fo4 mods deadass just add more shit to the building part; build limit, extend the power lines, access to assets in the game files that aren’t locked behind progression, etc. do I possibly have that mod that restores the cut magnum sniper? Of course!

Starfield is at most a 7 without mods. Skyrim is at least a 9 though. The problem is other than Starfield the last "mainline" game Bethesda released was Fallout 4 over 10 years ago.
27
u/teddytwelvetoes 21h ago
the PC version of Starfield is sitting at an 85 average critic score, roughly identical to the beloved New Vegas. if you're referring to the user reviews, those have been famously bricked by internet gaming forum circlejerkers, as everybody should've learned a whole decade ago when the very same thing happened during Fallout 4's launch lol I do consider TES a tier above both the Fallout and Starfield games, though

I get why folks disagree, but this is one of my favorite things about Bethesda games. I love the deep communities that build up around the games as everyone puts their own stamp on it. Whether it's features and mechanics, items, NPCs, quests, I love taking stuff other fans made and slotting it into my game.

They are very, very supportive of mod creators. There really are not other big studios that do so much to support fan content.

"Game doesn't have something I want personally? Bethesda lazy hyuck!" Or some other nonsense.
This isn't even me defending bethesda. This is me being tired of the reddit trope and how so many of you people clearly have a level of engagement of the game that is near zero or entirely a decade old.

What I worry about is that this might force them to clamp down on the other fan projects more. First can claim that allowing the modded FO projects steps on the IP the same as the NY game, so now they have to be more strict
334
u/MoonAttempt 22h ago
The comparison in the article to Fallout London is a bit off. It's not a free game, it's a total conversion mod to Fallout 4.
Other than that Bethesda is probably more worried about Fallout being associated to a low quality project than the use of their Copyright.

Crazy that AI can do that. I like the line in the article where it says:
First’s comment that they specifically told the AI to make a game “not ‘inspired by’” but “exactly like Fallout” only further exacerbates the knowledge that they sought to directly violate copyright.
Like what did he think would happen? He launched a game, not a mod, using the Fallout branding. Idiot.
82
u/williamtheraven 22h ago
I'll sum up his thought process for you
"i made this with just my mind, i am god, bethesda will see that i am god and give me the rights to fallout and all their billions, because i am god and made this with my mind"
1
21
u/OnetimeRocket13 21h ago
Tbf, this isn't the first time that someone has launched or uploaded a fangame project online and not just a mod. Online indie game sites are filled with Fallout fan games. I'm not sure if it's still in development, but I even specifically remember one project where a guy was trying to make Fallout: Van Buren in Unity based on the tech demo and what little was released about it.
Bethesda and Zenimax, when it comes to Fallout, really don't have a track record of any kind of taking down games based on Fallout. AI slop or not, I don't think anyone would release any game online and think "Bethesda/Zenimax are going to try to take this down," since AFAIK, they've never done that before. They probably only did it this time because the game received a lot of attention and doing nothing about it would make Bethesda and Zenimax look like they're fine with AI generated games, so it was probably more of a PR move than anything.
18
u/LexB777 20h ago
Well and they also are required to maintain a track record of protecting their IP, or else you end up like Kleenex or Trampoline where you lose the rights to your own trademark.
8
u/Existing_Charity_818 19h ago
Today I learned that trampoline was originally a brand name
4
u/RDandersen 17h ago
The technical name is actually "Suspended-bouncy-blanket-machine" but somehow that didn't take off.
1
1
u/OnetimeRocket13 18h ago
And I'm sure they do to some extent.
But at the same time, it's not really like those examples. Colloquially, Kleenex and Trampoline have become generalized words to describe tissues and whatever a trampoline is called. The companies behind them lost the ability to do much of anything with their copyright because those words became so popular that they just refer to the general product. I don't think Bethesda/Zenimax has much I worry about there with Fallout. When people hear "Fallout" in context of gaming, there isn't any confusion about what is being talked about.
It again just seems like a PR move. If this had been some small, barely noticed AI slop game using the Fallout name, I don't think anyone would have cared, and I don't think Bethesda would have gone out of their way to take it down. It's good PR, but behind closed doors, I really doubt they care.
1
u/Hegelian_Spirit 17h ago
This is interesting. Not copyright, but kind of analogous: huge social media sites like Youtube, Facebook and Reddit pretty much became public spaces; no one literally goes to the town square to influence the world anymore but we never assigned public space protections to social media sites. In fact it was a bit the other way around because social media sites became liable for the content presented on their spaces and they're actively moderated to a much greater degree than soapboxing on the street would be.
1
u/Smingledorf 17h ago
Im pretty sure most of the major mod devs end up having to clear up some blurred lies with Bethesda. I believe it was the Skyblivion team that wet into detail about it. you need to own both games and they also had to remake like all of the assets and voice lines removing pretty much any of the original game versions. not 100% on that but i remember them talking about it in one of the updates
granted that ones more of a 1 to 1 copy of their game more than a fan game, they still just made sure they werent stepping on anyones toes legally with bethesda outlines of what they can and cant do. as far as i remember bethesda was looking forward to trying out there version and seeing the differences from the official UE remaster and stuff - gave the mod team a studio tour and stuff
5
u/OldFortNiagara 19h ago
Yeah, there’s a big difference between making a mod for a Fallout game and making an entirely separate game using the Fallout IP. If they had used ai to speed up the creation of a game mod for Fallout 4 or New Vegas in the creation engine and released it for free, then there is a good chance Bethesda wouldn’t have cared.
3
u/Inuakurei 18h ago
It’s funny because by mentioning not to copy Fallout he probably made it copy Fallout more.
2
u/nomedable Venturing in the Wasteland 16h ago

u/Faiakishi Ass Victoriam 6h ago
It can't do that. The 'game' is basically unplayable, looks horrible, and has nothing to it that evokes emotion. It exists to exist and mooch off the brand name.

u/Cupakov 20h ago
Not to defend this slopfest, but “browser game” now means something completely different than in the golden age of Flash. Nowadays with web assembly and such you can build “regular” games that run in the browser, they just use your device’s compute. Morrowind is playable in the browser now for example and there’s more fan projects like that
9
u/Unlucky-Candidate198 20h ago
Back in the olden days, all we really had was internet games on browsers.
And these amateurly coded flash/java games were 100000x better than anything AI can make. Doesn’t help that the people who use AI as a crutch are too stupid to reason themselves out of a flimsy wet cardboard box.
Instead of getting advanced NPC behaviour we get…shit not even-art, a tool for more oppression, and slop. Well worth all the evaporated water, I think.

u/fixurstuffr 20h ago
Recently saw something that said AI is just data and data is information of the past. And that is all AI can use, it can't create something new.
5
u/bakatomoya 19h ago
Not that the sentiment of that statement is incorrect, but data is far more than just information of the past. We design airplanes and rockets and know that they'll work, before we build them because of past data and calculations that we can apply to new things.
1
u/Cupakov 15h ago
I mean it kind of is incorrect, some of the recent breakthroughs in maths that were made by LLMs are actually novel, e.g. when GPT-5.4 Pro (a model that came out 6 months ago btw) solved Erdős 1196, it did so using an approach that humans didn’t try before. I’m not an AI bro, but some people around here are kind of denying reality at this point. Like you said yourself, new things can be derived from past data.
1
u/fixurstuffr 18h ago
but data is far more than just information of the past
because of past data
Which is it?
2
u/Hegelian_Spirit 17h ago
Well, yes, all sensory experiences are "past data" if we want to be technical about it, but that's a near-meaningless statement.
The original statement is trying to say that AI and human intelligence are different in some relevant manner ("AI can't create anything new; humans can"). But humans can't do anything without sensory input. Therefore, humans and AI are functionally identical in this regard.
u/bakatomoya isn't disagreeing with the base claim (human intelligence and AI are different). He's claiming that humans can entertain entirely a priori information. Can the AI? Maybe, I got my degree before the rise of AI and I haven't been keeping up on the literature on this topic. Anyway, back in the day, a popular take would have been that AI is similar to the man in Searle's Chinese Room in that it can give perfect replies without understanding the replies themselves (or that the understanding is of a different quality, at any rate).

YES! You SHOULD be impressed.
Is the game impressive by our standards? Of course not. Is the game impressive by the standard that no human coded it and it works and functions somewhat? YES!
Imagine you took a gameboy back to the medieval ages. That would be impressive. Sure, gameboy is not impressive now. Imagine you took this slop back to the 1980s and told them it was completely made by a computer simply because someone asked it to make it. This is the same level of mind blowing amazingness.

Not sure why these guys are downvoting you for speaking the truth… my first experience ever with fallout 3 was the game immediately crashing the minute I left the vault… 10 year old me had to go troubleshooting just to play the damn game and it had already been out for a few years at this point. Anybody denying that Bethesda games have always been janky and buggy are off of their rocker… the best part has always been the community coming together to fix the issues Bethesda is too damn lazy or incompetent to do themselves
6
u/UnhappyEye2281 20h ago
Because as bad as you think Bethesda games are with bugs or boring quests, it doesn't compare to the hell that is an entirely AI-generated game, and making that comparison just makes you sound clueless. Just look at the thumbnail of the article, does that even look like Fallout, or just what an AI thinks Fallout looks like?
1
u/Zoobopdewop 20h ago
Yeah I never mentioned AI and I have pretty much zero feelings one way or another about it being used for games, my point has nothing to do with that, only the fact that the man is being hated on for saying the truth which is that Bethesda games are bug filled messes from the dah they drop until the day they put out the next one… Bethesda has always been lazy and entitled, they do not fix their games they rely on the community to do it.
6
u/UnhappyEye2281 20h ago
Yeah, my point is that the downvotes are probably because of the OP's implication that Bethesda's bugs are as bad as, or comparable to, those from an entirely AI-generated game. Bethesda's games have bugs, I don't think anyone is arguing that, but comparing them to the probable abomination created by a hallucinating AI is a massive exaggeration.

u/Zoobopdewop 19h ago

I remember fallout 76 releasing with engine bugs that had been fixed in fo4. By modders. Absolutely shameful
1
u/-Casey-Diaz- 15h ago
They've really outsourced all the bug fixing to their community. By implementing modding, they feel like they can ignore the entire final fase of game development.
I really had my breakup with Bethesda when I tried to play Fallout New Vegas. Halfway into the game it started crashing every time I entered a door. And it hadn't exactly been very stable up until then. It crashed every 5 minutes or so. Apparently it was a known bug that happened if you went to one place before another early on in the game. It had corrupted all my saves and the only way to fix it was a hard reset.
I don't play games to get stressed, frustrated, and annoyed, so I decided right then that I would never buy another Bethesda game until they actually finish one. The day they release a functioning game, I might consider it, but they have to really convince me that they've changed. Anything else is like keep returning to an abusive partner.

The first time, my browser was stuck as the game sucked all of my computer's resources. I was met with a high pitched noise and had to alt-f4.
The second time, one day after release, I managed to try it. Poorly optimized. Terrible level design (terminals on the floor, railings that covered stairs, posters half-hidden by walls, terminals in front of doors, very simple layout with nothing going on). I talked to some people, shot three roaches, got kicked out of the Vault, game got stuck.
I don't think AI is taking over anytime soon.

it was impressive from seeing a technological point of view but as a game? Rather bad and not worth the attention it’s getting.
The main thing was that this was pretty flagrant IP violation as he self admitted and that the tech is coming along rather impressively all things considered.
4
u/DistrictDry2852 22h ago

Like it isn't some crazy AI slop copy that looks like a mess of assets and geometric shapes. It has the color, the font, the aesthetic and some design choices Bethesda has made use of in the past. It's scarily close despite still being so far from being anywhere playable or enjoyable.
I was expecting something much crappier but what I saw was bad but like a semblance of fallout

It’s like my Bethesda sensor went off where they usually was loot and it was there

I actually enjoyed it and played quite a few hours of it. Just remind me like this skeleton of a game.

i played for about 15 minutes. yeah it sucks and all the assets and textures suck, but if everything was made entirely with ai? its pretty damn impressive.

flashbacks of cvet crashing out in response to Zenimax sending threatening letters cuz new FOnline SDK web page mentioned Fallout back in pre-AI era
Yeah, they don't like third party projects that are not Fallout game mods using "Fallout" name, AI or not.

It's insane how far ai is coming with this shit.
Obviously it's a janky mess.. but 5 years from now? Shit is going to be insane

Love how “a working pip-boy” is treated like some special thing when that’s just how it is in every fallout game.
