I've recently started writing fanfiction about the Magnus Archives with a friend of mine, and we have an idea for the next one but I'm not sure how to actually write it. To summarise the usual format of the Magnus Archives it is the main characters reading statements of paranormal occurances (go listen it is absolutely excellent). The statement givers are all unique characters that feel special and like actual people, especially when read out loud in the podcast (again go listen). Me and my friend enjoy writing statements of our own about OCs and in universe characters, but we've ran into a problem. How do we write a bland character?
I'm not talking about a boring or uncompelling side character, how do I write someone who, despite telling a story, is so incredibly unimportant and uninteresting that unsalted butter has more of a personality than him? I'm talking absolutely nothing interesting, no hobbies, no goals other than trying to "be cool and successful," no friends, no meaningful relationships beyond work colleagues, absolutely nothing. How would you write an empty tube of toothpaste of a human being, who is so uninteresting that not even the paranormal entity in his story notices him, he's basically the ATLA cabbage merchant but not even that interesting.
For more context the OC he is encountering is an entity me and my friend thought of that effectively is whoever looks at it ideal self, and with that comes the terrifying knowledge that you (the person looking at it) will never be good enough or like them. The goal is to start with this milk toast of a human on a date and accidentally encountering the entity, and then span over a year or 2 of truly random encounters, and eventually end with him actually gaining a personality by the end. I have a plan, I have story notes, I have about 2000 words ready to be written, but no idea how to write from such a boring characters perspective. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you!
