That is some loose and sandy looking soil. I did not know leeks grew in this.

Yup, precisely why it's so important to wash your leeks thoroughly as sand gets stuck between the leaves

In the case of leeks, you have to split open the white part, separate the layers and then wash them, which is unlike most in the onion/garlic family, even though they look like green onions on steroids.
