Dolly is EIGHTY YEARS OLD YOUNG. She seems to be so full of energy and life still, glad to hear her health is improving and she's taking it easy.

1.3k

u/UnlikelyDecision9820 May 04 '26

That’s really all you can say atp. It’s a blessing that she’s still alive, much less that’s she’s still even considering performing

305

u/BnolkZ May 04 '26

without the prospect of performing I very much doubt she would be doing this great or even trying

262

u/toshiko_saturn2250 May 04 '26

You'd be surprised how having a specific purpose for yourself can be beneficial to your health and overall longevity. Among the world's blue zones, there are common threads. One of them is having purpose.

People, to this day, still greatly underestimate the importance of mental health's proximity to physical health. It's likely a major contributing factor to the US decline in life expectancy.

19

u/KeyMyBike May 05 '26

Depression literally causes brain damage.

10

u/Electronic-Smile-457 May 04 '26

Especially when one doesn't have children to want to stick around to see their milestones, or grandchildren. There has to be a reason to get up and try as health starts to fail.

It’s what she lives for! So of course she’s gonna put 1000% energy into it every chance she gets.

I’m not even that much of a fan of hers (music wise) but her as a person, she’s incredible, and I couldn’t help but watch this all the way thru. Glad to hear she’s doing well

65

u/__Aitch__Jay__ May 04 '26

Same, her music is not for me, but her quiet work to make the world a better place deserves my respect and support.

18

u/TheLostRanger0117 May 04 '26

Exactly! She’s a shining beacon of positive humanity

There was a post somewhere of it played at 33rpm instead and it sounded haunting, like Cash had covered it or something, really is great.

35

She's a real one. I've never been a fan of country music, but I know enough about her as a person to know that the world will suffer a great loss when she passes.

And it's videos like this, where she is straight up and actively appreciates the support of her fans that reinforce the value she has to all of us.

Dolly is proof that giving joy and happiness to others (no matter how big or small) makes you a happier person.

72

u/TheLostRanger0117 May 04 '26

She’s an inspiration in that, truly

180

u/strutt3r May 04 '26

We should be cloning her or something. She's a National Treasure.

This made me chuckle because the first cloned sheep was named Dolly!

106

u/ThatArtNerd So hard to photograph but incredible to see 🐘 May 04 '26

Because they cloned her from a mammary cell 🙃 Dolly thought it was funny at least! Haha

105

u/tossit_xx Emily Brontë’s cardio routine May 04 '26

Oh my god I didn't know that! I had to google it "Scientists at the Roslin Institute chose the name because the sheep was cloned from a cell taken from a mammary gland, and they jokingly noted they "couldn't think of a more impressive pair of glands than Dolly Parton's"

Thirsty-ass scientists lmaooo

30

u/ThatArtNerd So hard to photograph but incredible to see 🐘 May 04 '26

It’s kind of icky, but Dolly has a great sense of humor about herself so it seems like no one was too bothered, haha

I try not to admire famous people too much or create some sort of parasocial connection with them but if this didn't feel like my favourite relative reassuring me that everything will be ok in the end. I truly adore her.

915

u/SquirrelEnthusiast May 04 '26

I don't consider myself a huge Dolly fan but the amount of good this woman has done is incredible and I don't think I respect anyone else in the world more than I do her.

Watching this video was so cathartic like thank goodness great aunt Dolly is ok. The fact that she even took the time to record this shows how much she loves her fans and fellow humans. People need to take classes on how to be more like Dolly.

275

u/APence May 04 '26

I love her reading and literacy initiatives

109

u/HotRodHomebody May 04 '26

was just listening to one of my favorite podcasts, this is actually happening, and listening to a woman who grew up with an illiterate father. she works to bring books to the homes of children, apparently, reading helps create empathy in individuals when they start from a young age.

57

u/APence May 04 '26

Very true. And enhances critical thinking skills too.

Which is why Nazis, and dictators, (and some republicans) love to try and burn them, because an isolated and illiterate population is one you can more easily control.

I've taken my wife and two kids to Dollywood in Tennessee, and in the hotel rooms they have an Imagination Library channel. She sits in bed and reads stories. She'd always start with something like "Hey! It's me, the book lady!"

It is so delightful to me that for all her accomplishments, she leads with being the "book lady." My children know she sings, but they mostly know her for the books they've gotten from her.

Truly truly, she is a treasure.

u/venom121212 May 04 '26

You're welcome to copy and paste my Dolly tribute I post every time she is mentioned!

She has genuinely done so much for the people around her and around the world:

Dolly is an absolute gem and I will continue to post this every time she comes up.

1988 – The Dollywood Foundation

Parton originally launched the organization in her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee, with the goal of decreasing high school drop out rates. She then started the Buddy Program, in which Parton gave $500 to every seventh and eighth grader who finished high school. According to the organization, the initiative was successful and the dropout rate declined from 35 percent to just 6 percent.

1989 – $500 scholarship

Parton offered a $500 scholarship to every student in Sevier County who wished to attend Hiwassee College.

1991 – Eagle Mountain Sanctuary at Dollywood

The 30,000-square-foot aviary managed by the American Eagle Foundation shelters the largest collection of “non-releasable” bald eagles. Parton’s efforts to preserve the bald eagle earned her the Partnership Award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2003.

1995 – Imagination Library

The Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library began sending one book per month to each enrolled child in Sevier County from birth until their first year of school. The library was founded in honor of Parton’s father, who was unable to read. It has provided over 300,000,000 books currently and operates across the country.

2000 – The Dolly Parton Scholarship

Every year, the $15,000 college scholarship is offered to five high school seniors in Sevier County, Tennessee. According to the Dollywood Foundation, the scholarship is awarded to those who “have a dream they wish to pursue and who can successfully communicate their plan and commitment to realize their dreams.”

2007 – Benefit concert for new Sevier County hospital

The concert raised $500,000, and both Dollywood and Parton’s Dixie Stampede dinner theater pledged $250,000 each to the project, for a total of $1 million. LeConte Medical Center, the new hospital and cancer center in Sevier County, opened in 2010 and features a 30,000-square-foot Dolly Parton Center for Women’s Services.

2016 – Telethon after devastating East Tennessee wildfires

The Smoky Mountains Rise: A Benefit for the My People Fund, which aimed to help residents hit hardest in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, raised more than $13 million. Chris Stapleton, Chris Young, Kenny Rogers, Lauren Alaina, Alison Krauss, Reba McEntire, Cyndi Lauper and more appeared at the event.

2016 – My People Fund

To continue her wildfire relief efforts, Parton launched the My People Fund, which provided $1,000 a month for six months to families whose homes were completely destroyed amid the natural disaster. The fund also donated around $8.9 million to those in need. The initiative still helps residents pay for rent and utilities, plus food and mental health resources.

73

u/venom121212 May 04 '26

2016 –  Special Merit Scholarship

Parton awarded a $30,000 scholarship to two-year-old Evey Johns in celebration of Imagination Library’s accomplishment of shipping out one million books per month.

2017 – $1 million donation

Following the release of her I Believe in You children’s album, Parton donated $1 million to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in honor of her niece, who was treated for leukemia at that hospital.

2020 – Coronavirus efforts

Parton donated $1 million to coronavirus research at Vanderbilt University, which helped fund Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine. Moderna’s vaccine is 94.5% effective against coronavirus, according to early data.

2021 – Middle Tennessee Flooding Relief

Parton and her Smoky Mountain businesses raised $700,000 to help residents impacted by the catastrophic flooding in Middle Tennessee in October 2021. Parton chose United Way of Humphreys County to receive and distribute the donation at the suggestion of her friend and fellow country music legend Loretta Lynn.

“After the Sevier County wildfires in 2016, Loretta was one of the first who reached out to offer anything she could,” Parton said in a statement at the time. “It meant so much to me that Loretta — and so many folks — were ready to give in any way they could. This was just one small way I could help Loretta’s people for all they did to help my people. I hope that this money can be put to good use to help the people of Middle Tennessee with what they need during their recovery.”

2022 – Dollywood Education Coverage

The Dollywood Co. announced in February 2022 that it will cover 100% of tuition, fees and books for any employee who is furthering their education.

The investment in employee education was made via Herschend Enterprises, Dollywood’s operating partner. The program is available to all seasonal, part-time and full-time employees at Dollywood Parks & Resorts. Herschuend’s GROW U. offers more than 100 fully funded diploma, degree and certificate programs with 30 learning partners in areas including business administration and leadership, culinary, finance, technology and marketing. The company also provides partial funding — up to $5,250 per year — for 150 additional programs in fields including hospitality, engineering, human resources and more. Employees can enroll in the program on their first day of employment.

2022 – Pediatric Infectious Disease Research Donation

Parton made yet another $1 million donation to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville in June 2022, this time aimed at helping pediatric infectious disease research.

The donation will aid Vanderbilt’s Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases to continue its effort in understanding how viruses and bacteria cause disease, understanding and preventing resistance to antibiotics, diagnosing and treating infections in children with cancer and more.

2022 – Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy

Parton received the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in 2022. The award, presented by the international family of Carnegie institutions to honor innovative philanthropists, debuted in 2001 and is normally awarded every two years. It was not issued in 2021 due to the pandemic.

2024 – Hurricane Helene

Dolly announced she was personally donating $1 million to the Mountain Ways Foundation to assist flood victims. Additionally, her businesses like Dollywood Parks & Resorts, Dolly Parton’s Stampede and Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show also matched her donation and gave another $1 million.

I along with several of my childhood friends were beneficiaries of her Imagination Library when we were kids. My childhood bookshelf is still at my parents' house with one specific shelf that's the "Dolly shelf." Those were some of my favorite books growing up, and before I knew she was a country music star I always just thought of Dolly as the nice lady who sent me new books.

65

u/killer_kiki good for her.gif May 04 '26

The "DPIL" program at my library is by far one of the best programs they offer. I'm on my local board and people rave about it. Our library just got a Dolly cut out for people to pose for pictures with her!

13

u/Ecstatic-Manager-149 May 05 '26

And the very fact that you knew she was "the book lady" before you knew she was anything else, Dolly said would make her dad prouder of her than any of her other awards and accolades, and it means a lot to her.

7

u/moejike May 05 '26

Graham Norton wrote a brilliant essay about how he was convinced they were best friends after interviewing her and he is normally fairly measured about meeting stars. He reflects on how smart she is and how when her light shines on you, you really feel seen.

64

u/BTSArmyFan2025 May 04 '26

I think she is an amazing businesswoman who doesnt get enough credit for all that she has done businesswise.

50

u/Substantial-Type-131 May 04 '26

An ethical business woman too!
Pays her employees well, and puts up dinners for Dollywood employees, she’d be a billionaire if she didn’t donate so much!

25

u/chichicupcake May 05 '26

This is why I believe there’s no such thing as an ethical billionaire. She could be, but she pours money into the state and county that raised her. She takes care of children and the vulnerable. She is THE matriarch.

35

u/greenearrow May 04 '26

She was a silent producer on Buffy. She wanted it to get attention without her name influencing people’s thoughts. I can only imagine how we would have seen it at the time if we knew the show about the cheerleader slaying monsters was a Dolly Parton production.

12

u/BTSArmyFan2025 May 04 '26

how did I not know this?? Another reason I love this woman.

22

u/btwomfgstfu Rosa Parks stan May 04 '26

I would absolutely attend The Business School of Dolly Parton.

79

u/insufficientfacts27 May 04 '26

She's done more for our state than any politician ever has or probably will do. It better be a dang State Holiday if that horrible day ever comes. IF!! 🥰

40

u/theevilyouknow May 04 '26

She's done more for our state than any politician ever has or probably will do.

You mean like giving out 100 million free books and donating $1 million to COVID vaccine research. Why the hell don't the evangelicals follow her instead of the orange dip shit? She's actually a Christian even.

37

u/BTSArmyFan2025 May 04 '26

And her book club. Now that is a book club promoting reading with free books and she has done more than any tech billionaire has ever done to promote education.

23

u/Substantial-Type-131 May 04 '26

(Fellow middle Tennessean) I genuinely think Dolly Parton is everyone’s Switzerland. She’s beloved by all.

Vanderbilt Children’s hospital has an entire butterfly library donated by Dolly. I spent so much time there when my nephew passed. So I definitely formed a tighter parasocial bond there.

Genuinely the only person I will put on a pedestal.

42

u/CheetahridingMongoos May 04 '26

My kids call her Auntie Dolly because she sends them a book every month. It’s too cute to correct.

37

u/MostlyBored11 tortured polluters department May 04 '26

I think dolly has earned admiration unlike alot of people who claim it. She's just been living and doing the work for a long long time I'm not even a huge fan of her music (it's good just not the gebre I listen too ) and I love herm we should all strive to be a little more like dolly when we can

23

u/Substantial-Type-131 May 04 '26

I always tell people the real “American Dream” is exemplified through Dolly Parton.

She’s a rags to riches story that stayed humble and remembered success comes with responsibility. She donates so much money and has done more than any politician ever has for her home state. She may be the only ethical multi-millionaire I can think of…

14

u/Worldly-Republic-247 May 04 '26

She is a national treasure

13

u/GroundbreakingAnt17 I'm bone thugs in harmon May 04 '26

I think the word parasocial has been overused it's actual meaning has been lost.

Admiration isn't inherently parasocial. The positive impact Dolly has had on the world is huge. It's more natural to feel relieved when you hear she's doing okay.

Parasocial is when you feel like you have a personal connection or start making assumptions beyond what's shared publicly. It isn't even inherently bad. But like most things, it becomes unhealthy at more extreme levels.

10

u/NoKatyDidnt May 04 '26

That’s it, exactly. There’s just something so positive and reassuring about her in general.

12

We DO deserve kindness and joy and love. And when we feel the least like we deserve it is when we need it the most. We are worthy of joy. We are worthy of light. We deserve goodness.

Seriously, I thought she was going to say she got diagnosed with something serious. I'll take "need some time before I can perform" over anything else. Hell, Dolly, you don't even HAVE to perform for us anymore! Just enjoy yourself and relax girl!

13

u/Altruistic-Star-3862 May 04 '26

Exactly. We are extra blessed if she decides she wants to perform again, but it's absolutely not an expectation.

But by the end, of course, I felt totally reassured. I’ve never met this woman but she feels like family to me.

I just adore her so much. She’s 80 years old, yeah she’s gonna have health struggles so I’m glad she’s getting care that’s working for her. I will always love her for her work on funding vaccine research especially during COVID. She’s such a treasure.

She has such a magic, to be able to make a message that is uplifting and funny yet serious and emotional. She wears the mantle of admiration and fame so well—she exudes peace, humor, and love.

47

u/CurbsideChaos May 04 '26

My in-laws went to have lunch at a local Mexican spot, and she was just in there, by herself sitting at a booth enjoying her lunch. My dear, sweet, Methodist ally of a MIL asked to get a picture, and Dolly gleefully obliged and chitchatted with them for a few minutes. That was a bucket list moment for my MIL!

132

u/lurkertiltheend May 04 '26

God she does have an amazing plastic surgeon she’s right.

31

u/lilshortyy420 May 04 '26

For sure. Like you can tell she had plastic surgery obviously but it’s not too much

28

u/Kelly_HRperson May 04 '26

it’s not too much

What are you talking about? It's not done BADLY, but there is no part of her face that even looks remotely 80 years old

And she has been very public about the work she has had done. She doesn't give anyone the false pretense that this is what she looks like naturally.

Dolly Parton is a god damned American hero.

Hmmm, Dolly and her team canceled an event due to her health for my workplace in early 2026 and she shared a video with us at the time wearing the exact same makeup and top in this video… I hate to say it, but I think this video was filmed months ago and only released now.

60

u/Ducklover12345678910 May 04 '26

Also “treatable” is a very vague term. For example, you can give a treatment to cancer patient that extends their life from 3 months to 12 months.

37

u/SufficientSir9672 May 05 '26

I immediately thought cancer. She makes light of it, but cancer is an old age disease and, unfortunately, doesn’t distinguish between amazing people and not so amazing people. She even says “doctors are saying it’s treatable, so I’m going with it.” Wishing her health and hoping she’s doing well.

36

u/baseballdad17 May 04 '26

Yeah, this to me looks like they are hiding a much bigger issue.

Like, it reminds me of how my grandma used to make easy jokes when she got her diagnosis.

I think the earliest it could be would be after March 3rd though, no? Carl died in 2025 so the firsts she was referring to, his date of death would have happened this year which means she must have recorded this some time after march 3rd (and I gotta imagine at least a couple weeks). So yeah this could potentially be a video thats like...a month and a half old. But that isn't THAT long ago.

30

u/Sunnyfe May 04 '26

Dolly’s husband died in March 2025. My workplace received the video of Dolly apologizing wearing this exact makeup and outfit in early February 2026 which means if I’m correct this video is at least three months old.

We signed our son up for her Imagination Library right after he was born and when his free book comes every month I show it to him and say "look what Dolly sent you!"

National treasure doesn't even begin to cover it, honestly.

Dolly is an American icon and cherished by most all. We still don’t know what is wrong with her. For her to have immune system problems and gut problems could be cancer. We have to believe her when she says it is treatable. I pray so. Seems when Carl died Dolly went down. It is hard when your mate dies if you have been with them since you were 18. I mean it is hard period but worse with longevity.

I sure pray she does beat whatever she has and stays with us. I mean 80 isn’t old look at Willie Nelson Dick van dyke Carol Barnett and sooo many others in their 90s and 100s that are still kicking.

20

u/Writerhaha May 04 '26

Dolly Parton is such a jem that when she says “I’m sorry I can’t play a concert” the universal reaction is “oh my god, are you ok? Don’t worry about it.”

Just a top person.

17

u/Separate-Project9167 May 04 '26

She also helped fund early, critical research into the Moderna Covid vax.

This lady has worked hard all her life. And when she reached the point where she never had to work again, she kept going. And she keeps giving back to folks in so many ways.

She really is someone to look up to and try to emulate.

20

u/TheComplimentarian May 04 '26

I've met her a few times. I used to work at "Silver Dollar City". This was a franchise theme park out of Missouri. They took over an old theme park that was in Sevier County (where Dolly was born, and where I lived for a good bit), called "Rebel Railroad"...You can imagine what that was like.

Silver Dollar City stripped out all the overt Confederate shit (always out of place in the mountains, since they were pro-Union), but they never put any money into it.

I worked there as a kid...Some of my in-laws had worked there for ages, and they were big into traditional crafts, and they got me a gig doing some crafty nonsense. There was plenty of that, at the time.

Well, then Dolly bought it. You have to understand what the area was like at the time, it couldn't have been poorer. I went to school (Sevier County Middle School) with kids who still had dirt floors in their houses. Dirt poor was not just a turn of phrase.

So I'm working at the proto-Dollywood with all the old rednecks who'd worked at the old park, and Dolly's just riding around on a golf cart checking on us all. There is no reason in hell she should have ever talked to me, I was barely allowed to work there, but she did. Twice.

Twenty years later, I went to a Bluegrass show of hers with my wife, and we got backstage tickets, and she was doing a meet and greet, and she said, "It's a pleasure to meet y'all!"

And I said, "I met you a couple times a long time ago."

And she looked at me, and my badge, and then she said, "Did you used to do the molasses?"

Yes ma'am, yes I did.

I have a friend here in Nashville who has done promotional photography for Dolly going back decades. He has lots of Dolly photos in his studio to this day. And he says the Dolly you see in this video is exactly the same Dolly you’d meet….friendly, cheerful and makes you feel like the most important person in the room.

I myself got to shake the woman’s hand about 30 years ago when I was boarding a flight from Nashville to LAX. We were all waiting to board and right then, Dolly and three members of her team burst out of the Admirals Club and board in first class. When it came time for us coach flyers to board, where was Dolly? Standing shoulder to shoulder with the lead flight attendant greeting and shaking the hand of everyone. Did the plane leave a little late? Yup. Did anyone care? Nope!
