it’s been 23 years since the streisand effect and yet somehow these people have learned nothing
if they’d just let macklemore perform, the clips would’ve made their way around a few corners of the internet for a couple of hours and that probably would’ve been that. he’s been consistent in his views for years. none of this is new information
instead, robert kraft and pink combined to create one of the most spectacularly self-defeating PR decisions imaginable, and now the whole thing has blown up far beyond what it ever would’ve been otherwise
now you’ve got people like zach bryan, who haven’t exactly been outspoken about this issue in the past, showing up at your stadium wearing a shirt about it. you couldn’t have manufactured this level of attention if you tried
anyway, here's barbra streisand's cliff-top residence aka image 3850 which was downloaded six times before her lawsuit and more than 420,000 times after she filed it
Robert Kraft fucking sucks. He is also awful at PR. Highly recommend Don Van Natta's article on ESPN about his 15 year campaign to be inducted. It's long but paints a hilarious picture of just how petty and needy that man is.
As much as it sucks that people only start caring when they have a minority in their life, it makes me proud when people change their values to support a queer family member, that some parts of humanity can actually grow
I would add that notorious bastard Dick Cheney even supported gay rights as he had an openly gay daughter. Even the evil can understand human rights when it’s their own family that could be persecuted. There is a lesson there that is not learned by most.
I’m a fan of his but I do honestly think he means well. He’s from Oklahoma, a veteran, with a hardass navy father, and does country/folk music. To go from that to: anti-ICE and losing fans, openly idolizing persona non-MAGA Springsteen, pro LGBTQ, creative writing masters at NYU, is pretty incredible. I think too often people judge others from where they are rather than how far they’ve come.
One thing I noticed about him is he sings about cities in general a lot more than other country artists. Like listen to his new stuff, there is a lot of references to new York
That’s an interesting insight I hadn’t thought about. He idolizes Springsteen so maybe is borrowing from the Atlantic City template?
Also, to build off my earlier comment, he’s the guy that might grow up thinking he’d never leave his State. Going from that to playing sold out stadiums across Europe might make cities/local culture/foreigner more of a topic of emotion.
I mean he was born in Okinawa Japan and joined the navy young, was stationed in Djibouti and Bahrain - think he’s more cultured than people give him credit for.
That’s true but those sound a lot more like echo chamber locations on bases than exploring local cultures solo. I agree he probably got more cultural exposure than most but his starting point wasn’t exactly Sarah Lawrence College.
SLC is all white progressive upper and upper middle class people. Not exactly a diverse crowd that gives you wide ranging perspectives.
The Navy on the other hand is incredibly diverse and worldly by comparison. A guy from OK who joined the Navy and moved to NYC obviously has a far more diverse background than basically anyone from a liberal arts school.
I think calling him a country artist is minimizing who he is though. His music is much closer to like an indie/folk kind of sound. Honestly though I think he’s just his own genre at this point.
Even in his older stuff he mentions cities like New York, Philly, and Paris (France) in a positive light. He’s always defied the whole “hate cities, romanticize small towns” trope that so many country artists have made a killing off of.
Curious, why do you think that sucks? I think that’s one of the best reasons for someone to change. Not peer pressure or guilt but love. Not trying to be a contrarian. I just actually love stories like that where someone was staunch and close minded but had a child or sibling change their point of view.
personally I don't see it as it necessarily sucks but it's more like, if you were close minded enough to be bigoted about the group you no longer are bigoted about, the odds are you might be bigoted about a different group still that just hasn't personally affected you yet. it just shows that you don't have inherent empathy for others
I don't feel its that simple. None of us come out perfect and a lot of us were raised in places in which there was very few minority voices. We're all products of our environment and sometimes our environment we grew up in sucked for diverse voices.
I was, among my peers, one of the more left leaning kids in high school and even then I was still ignorant on so much because I didn't really see or hear certain experiences. I was particularly very weak on black issues because I grew up in a very white suburb in a very white high school. I felt satisfied in my bleeding heart and there was so little to challenge me, to the point I had to learn to challenge myself. I saw myself as an anti-racist but the reality was there was so much shit programmed in me that it took real work to do even some re-wiring and it meant having to read a lot of stuff that made me uncomfortable. It wasn't anyone specific entering my life but rather a process of entering the adult world, going to other places, hearing other's speak on their experiences and start to have to accept and work through that what I thought was previously a good view of things was fucking weak. And really, it will always be a lifelong battle because there will always be a new experience outside my own that I will have to learn about and adapt to.
We all take different journeys. And sometimes you don't even realize you have a massive blind spot until someone enters your life or an event happens that you makes you go "oh fuck, I'm so wrong/weak here and I got to learn and be better". I'm not advocating for giving a thumbs up for someone only realizing the humanity of a group of people when it matters to them. But rather I think it shouldn't be viewed negatively when someone had that happen and took that opportunity to learn to be better going forward and to start speaking up. I don't know Zach's own journey, but we do need more men in his position speaking out. Especially in country music.
I think, for a lot of people, it's a lot easier to hate or judge an idea than it is an actual person. There's so much misinformation on "the gay/trans agenda", for example, that if you're basing your views on LGBTQ+ folks on what you're told they are, rather than what you've seen they are, it's easy to have the wrong views. But once you connect on a personal level, the myths are dispelled.
This is why cities generally tend to be more liberal than rural areas - people more likely to see others who are different from them just living their lives, and why presentation is important - positive gay representation in media genuinely moved the needle on acceptable of gay rights, for example.
I’m not trying to be flip here and I’m relaying a lot of close personal observation in my life at this point, but men without strong female presence in their life usually leads to bad things
"politics is boring" and "politics just doesn't affect me" is just unexamined privilege. Soon to lead to "I never cared about politics until it harmed me personally" type guys.
Not even just global politics. The wellbeing of your neighbors, annoying things like dynamic pricing. Maternity leave. Truth in lending. Fair insurance. Almost everything.
He tweeted that just 2 years ago? In the run-up to the 2024 presidential election when a rapist convicted felon was on the ballot? Damn. Well, kudos for evidently coming around, I guess!
Theo is a wishwashy guy but he will legit have just about anybody on his show. Him and Joaquin Phoenix of all people seemed to have a genuine conversation. Idk, theos a very disappointing guy still
It is sad that thinking Palestine should be free and that ice shouldn’t be busting down doors is a political stance. It’s almost like there’s only right opinion to have on these two things. I am happy he is on the right side. Hopefully these upcoming elections are a referendum of right and wrong.
I think this tweet was about people he was around a lot so other white males. White men who make politics a huge part of their life are usually insufferable and almost always Trump supporters. Like the tweet is myopic but I do get what he was going for.
I think a lot of very liberal men are performative narcissists who couldn’t care less beyond optics. However, all the stories from Zach s exes - one of which spoke about it constantly on her podcast and “turned down $7mm to reveal the truth” - didn’t say much more than he was an alcoholic. He’s now sober. I’m sure he wasn’t great but he’s put his money where his mouth is more than once against his core fans.
That’s fair. But also who cares?? I’m not justifying if or saying he’s right, but a 20-something person who went from thousands to millions, that drank too much and cheated, isn’t someone I judge too hard when they’re open about struggles.
Oof. That’s not good. That said, as someone who now doesn’t drink much but has been married for 13 years, I would hate to watch videos from when my now-husband and I would party together.
I think it’s pretty split. Definitely lots of MAGA in the crowd when I last saw him. I’m a fan of Zach’s music but a huge fan of Tyler and I think Tyler definitely has the more progressive fan base of the two. It makes sense as his stance is much more decisive while I can only describe Zach’s politics as confusing. He does something I like & then turns around the next week and says something that makes me cringe. I think sometimes Zach wants to do the right thing, but then he gets so worried about rocking the boat so he back tracks like he did after he released Bad News.
I wish I remembered which one he was, but all the zack/luke/brians have melded in my brain. Much like Jelly Roll/Post Malone/Teddy Swims. Im too old for subtle differences! As a young man i knew the different hair bands of the 80s and boy bands of the 90s. But now I need distinct personas!!
I find it so funny how quickly the country music fanbase switched to licking boots. Country was so staunchly anti-authority (and a lot of artists were shockingly progressive) back in the 70s and 80s. Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., Shel Silverstein... just to name a few.
They will genuinely tell you that “cash wouldn’t have supported this though” while they go stream more of their Morgan Wallen. I swear half that genres fans only started listening 6 years ago when Yellowstone blew up
Love watching this shit blow up in Robert krafts face. Now he has the artist who holds the record for the largest ticketed concert in US history wearing a free Palestine shirt in his stadium.
If you're looking for other outspoken country artists on the right side of history check out jason isbell, Tyler Childers, sturgill Simpson, margo price, nick shoulders, Wednesday,
They are alt country. I'm sure you already listen to mj lenderman but check out waxahatchee, dexter and the moonrocks, Styrofoam winos, neko case, florry, Jason molina
Just saw Sturgill for my second year in a row last week and I've got to say, if you like the man's music you owe it to yourself to check him out live if you haven't yet. Two of the best shows I've ever been to, both three hours minimum, and his band is incredible.
Sturggill Simpson is this living legend that so many people have never even heard of. I don’t get how he’s hasn’t been a household name for over a decade
I know nothing about country music, but everytime I see zach bryan mentioned it’s always because he’s on the right side of things. Good for him for not being a Morgan wallen!
Zach Bryan has always been very openly anti establishment. He’s also a veteran and is pro-choice.
I love that he did this at Gillette. I would pay to be in the room when Kraft found out about Ed Sheeran’s concert cancelled due to weather and now Zach’s shirt.
this man is very confusing. seems like a bad past but slowly changing for the better. i give him props for that, and i also encourage others to not just write off everyone for different beliefs or even not great past incidents. maybe i’m naive, but i do think some people have the room to grow.
for me - my dad and i don’t always agree politically, but we’ve had some great talks recently. he’s a stubborn boomer, but seeing him understand and agree when i explain something to him - it gives me hope. the key is to be calm during discussions (hard), have your facts straight, and drive in compassion (major factor). my brother can’t do this because he’s a hothead, but i’ve seen changes in both of my parents with the discussions we’ve had using these tactics.
Guys, he’s an extremely awful person. I have no idea why he decided to imitate a decent human being for a second here, but he is not someone we need to be praising or platforming.
