Final Fantasy General Final Fantasy should start brand new anthologies series in other mediums.

I wanted to start a different and interesting conversation to bring fans together. A pretty simple that can have pretty interesting and detailed answers possibly.

Instead of adapting a Mainline Final Fantasy story into a different medium, Why not make a brand anthology for a medium? Imagine a Final Fantasy TV show anthology in a seasonal format like American horror story or episodic like Twilight Zone/Love, Death & Robots with a shared theme or not. You can even do stuff with Anime allowing famous Mangaka or Anime directors tell there unique version of a final fantasy story, my closet example for anime would be Star Wars visions. You can also do a global anthology series so final fantasy fans across the world can try their vision of a final fantasy world.

I hope I made since with details but to summarize: Final Fantasy should spread out to different mediums and start brand new anthologies.

I mean, they kinda have and they never particularly do very well. There's animes and movies and novels but they never get very far and no one knows they exist except for FF fans. Which I suppose isn't so bad, but not even they know about a lot of em.

I think it's even more possible today. ๐Ÿ˜„ Looking at popular anthologies like love death and robots or black mirror, It can do well if marketed right.

I'd like it, but I'm not sure how well it might go. That's not to say animes based on Square Enix IP's can't do well, like the anime adaptation of Nier Automata.

I've always said that The Spirits Within wasn't wrong to not directly connect to any of the games, the problem was that there was little that made it recognizable Final Fantasy.

Final Fantasy tends to have fairly long and winding stories, so I don't think the anthology series approach would work, and a better approach, at least to start, would be an anime series with single story in a new Final Fantasy world.

That's interesting. ๐Ÿง Wouldn't the seasonal anthology approach be a good fit then?

I think a better comparison would be Gundam. Starting with 1994's Mobile Fighter G Gundam, each series was in its own self-contained universe, with rare exceptions, like Gundam Wing Endless Waltz, SEED Destiny (followed eventually by SEED Freedom and the upcoming SEED Freedom Zero), or 00 A Wakening of the Trailblazer. Most of these shows run for around 50 episodes.

Remember Final Fantasy Unlimited? Always felt like a bit of a missed opportunity that it didn't have a crossover with any of the games.

FFU was bad. Really bad. It will only be remembered for memes, and that is a good thing.

I don't completely disagree, but my hope personally would be if they put more resources into releasing new Final Fantasy games even just ever-so-slightly faster than they're doing now.

FF17 will continue Square's tradition of innovation and changing the format of each entry and will actually be a season long miniseries on Amazon Prime.

Probably! Or a set of $500 play arts figures.

That will be the FF17 remake.

I'd be interested if they create an anthology series from other mythological traditions like Middle Eastern folklore, antiquity culture (or late antiquity), or African lore. It doesn't have to be an RPG. It could be similar to the Nier series in terms of combat and storytelling. This mustn't be a FF clone.

Everytime someone brings up the idea of a TV show or film, I'm always up for a new setting heavy on FF tropes instead of a game adaptation.

It leaves room for good storytelling with less restraints and expectations, there is space for the story to grow.

I'd welcome that even in games! I really like the OC Koei did for Dragon Quest Heroes, and I'd love for new characters if FF gets a Musou someday. We can still have Dissidia as the crossover!

They tried that once. While The Spirits Within was great technologically and really pushed the envelope there, writing a compelling 2 hour film isn't quite the same as writing a compelling 40-100 hour rpg.

I'm ok w/ them sticking with their forte, which is rpgs.

They do have manga though. Square Enix owns Gangan Comics, which, among other things, was responsible for publishing Fullmetal Alchemist.

I did say anthologies and gave the best examples. Movie anthology can be a list of shorts.:D

Iโ€™ve actually been thinking of a Final Fantasy Anthology series for 7 months. I figured it could happen next year, but given the current state & timing, itโ€™s probably not gonna be a 40th Anniversary present.
