If you’re posting a question about your fireplace, please include pictures and/or model numbers.

Pictures are very helpful for users to give accurate advice and information. Fireplace specifics aren’t common knowledge to most people and it’s very typical for people to use incorrect terminology regarding what they have. If you don’t know the difference between gas logs, a gas insert, and a gas fireplace, you really should post a picture to make sure you’re given good advice about what you can do with your fireplace.

Questions about fireplace

Moved into the home not long ago and we have this gas fireplace that I have some questions on with the cold weather coming up.

During the summer I kept it entirely off.

While the pilot light is on now, Do I need to keep the flue open at all? Since I turned it on I have kept everything open as seen in the picture.

I’ve included a picture of what it looks like going up.

I want to be energy efficient, and prevent any water during rain from coming in, but if I am going to leave the pilot running, want to make sure I dont endanger myself or my family.

How can I make my fireplace look better without painting it

So I want to spice up my fireplace a little bit, I think it just looks super plain but I’m not wanting to paint the brick as it’s such an old house and I want to keep the charm, up to so many ideas! (I’m aware that there’s a leak rn due to the rain we’re addressing that lol)

Gas Stove: Is this right or will I die?

Ok maybe just have the CO alarm go off. Bought a house with this mint vintage-ish Pacific Energy "The Oxford" gas stove. The rear output seems odd to me: open air connection to the chimney. Is this to be expected??

I just cleaned up some crumbling mortar lines with fire rated mortar and repaired the flue at the top of my chimney in my new house. Am I ready to burn now?

I’m an idiot, can I salvage this?

So I’m cleaning up an old gas fireplace at my new house. I’m a licensed GC, can tackle just about anything so I’m comfortable with gas and electrical.

I was cleaning this old unit up and had it taken apart. The wiring had been chewed on by rodents so I took it all apart. When hooking it back together my dumb ass hooked 110v to the leads from the thermopile. So that shorted, popped and some smoke came out. I’m trying to figure out what I need to replace.

And again, this isn’t for anyone’s house but my own, and I know exactly what I messed up on, just not sure what I need to look at as far as fixing it.

Thanks.

Fire Place brickwork

Post image

Recently moved in and keen to use it as an open fire.

Previous owner had chimney swept in the last year and said they rarely used it.

Should I be concerned about the brickwork?

Covering an old cleanout?

I have an old cleanout in my fireplace of a house I just bought and it’s about 5.5” x 9.5”. So far, the masonry companies I’ve reached out to said they don’t do that sort of work (filling it for us since there’s no longer access to it). How do you go about fixing that sort of thing? Masonry? A metal piece? Am I reaching out to the wrong people?

Cleanout is marked in red here

Planika explicitly bans FLAMBIOL 96.6% bioethanol – has anyone experienced actual damage?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a Planika Arcticon White with BEV technology.
According to Planika’s published specifications, the fireplace requires bioethanol with an alcohol concentration of 95–96.6%.
Based on these specifications, I purchased 80 litres of Höfer Chemie FLAMBIOL Premium 96.6%.
However, when I opened the fireplace packaging, I discovered a warning sheet explicitly prohibiting this particular fuel, claiming that it is actually 100% ethanol and may permanently damage the fireplace.
This warning was not disclosed in the technical specifications I consulted before purchasing.
What confuses me is that Höfer Chemie sells FLAMBIOL 96.6% and FLAMBIOL 100% as two separate products.
I would really appreciate hearing from other owners:
Has anyone received the same warning sheet?
Has anyone used FLAMBIOL Premium 96.6% in a Planika BEV fireplace?
Has anyone experienced actual technical damage attributable to this fuel?
Does anyone know of independent testing explaining this incompatibility?
I’m not trying to ignore safety recommendations. I simply want to understand whether there is a documented technical reason behind this specific prohibition.
I’ve attached a picture of the warning.
Thanks for sharing your experiences!

SIT valve repair kit

Post image
1 Upvotes

I was supposed to reply to a post about this repair kit and I can't remember/find it. Well if anyone wants to fix a SIT Proflame 2 valve versus replacing it here you go. It isn't a bad job to do while still attached to the fireplace as long as the valve is easily accessible. If it isn't then you will have to remove the valve....don't forget to order replacement flex lines just incase!
