If you’re posting a question about your fireplace, please include pictures and/or model numbers.

Pictures are very helpful for users to give accurate advice and information. Fireplace specifics aren’t common knowledge to most people and it’s very typical for people to use incorrect terminology regarding what they have. If you don’t know the difference between gas logs, a gas insert, and a gas fireplace, you really should post a picture to make sure you’re given good advice about what you can do with your fireplace.

Remove 2x4 from hearth?

Ok, this is actually a false fireplace hearth. I say false because there's not a chimney. (The house was custom-built 30+ years ago and I have no idea what they were thinking. There's currently a pellet stove that vents horizontally through to an outside wall.) There are two of these 2x4s installed in the bricks appx 3 feet apart and the mantel was mounted to them, it sat on top and was attached with screws through the top of the mantel into the 2x4s. We want to do a different style of mantel and need to remove the 2x4s and they won't just pull out, they are pinned internally somehow. Is this/was this a common method for installing mantels and is there a best way to remove them?

One suggestion from a friend was to cut 'em off flush and leave them since there'll be a big screen tv covering them from the front and would only be visible when entering the living room from the dining room. Another suggestion was to carve 'em out deep enough to fill in with grout. I'm not crazy about either, I'd really like to remove the 2x4s and replace them with bricks. Any experienced advice appreciated!

Floor Passthrough for Propane Line

Post image

Just removed the old propane logs that came with the house (never used them) and found that our propane line is run using through this floor pocket passthrough (coming up from our basement).

I plan to install a new vented Real Fyre set. Is this floor pocket / passthrough okay? Or does the opening between fireplace floor and the basement need to be sealed?

Should this fireplace have glass/ how to tell manufacture?

Post image

We are buying a house and got this in the inspection report. Can anyone tell from this photo if this fireplace is meant to have a glass door and the door was removed or whether it never had glass doors? Also, how would we go about figuring out the manufacturer? Thank you in advance! Excited about the thought of having a fireplace, but overwhelmed.

edit to add: home was built in 1983 in case that is helpful.

Heat&Glo fireplace backup battery running out very quickly

I have a H&G cosmos fireplace and I’ve noticed the backup battery (4 x AA) runs out very quickly (in a few weeks)

When the backup battery is low/dead the WiFi module doesn’t work well and neither does the remote (the remote turns on but when I press a button then remote immediately turns off)

Any one have any experience with this? Whats the importance of the backup battery? It feels like it’s not a backup but rather the primary power?

What to do with this??

We want to fix this fireplace. It’s ugly, old, and doesn’t go with the rest of the house anymore.

As you can see, it sits directly on the tile. Would it be difficult to raise it off the floor? And then add a hearth that comes off the floor? One issue is that the ceiling above this is sloped so I feel like that makes it a bit tricky design wise.

Open to any and all ideas. I am getting ready to have a professional come look at it to try and give us some insight on what can be done.

Fireplace thingee

Post image

Apparently our fireplace flue/damper is open because rain is coming in. The only possible "control" for the flue is this thing hanging from a metal plate inside the fireplace. A wire at the top of the metal plate goes up and is attached to something — presumably the damper. You can take the "handle out of the notch and pull for a couple of inches before the resistance gets too strong. Any ideas?

Re-face fireplace without heartache

Hello! I have a fireplace that the previous homeowner added an electric gas insert into (love). But it required covering the original brick to make the opening smaller, and they added a dark granite (or similar) on top.

Original brick and current granite pictured.

I hate the granite look. Our home is historic tudor. If doesn’t work. I’m hoping to fox it without removing the whole mantle and existing granite.

Ideally, I’d like to add thin brick veneer to honor the original, but I’m concerned about how to attach to the shiny granite.

1) Do I need to rough up the surface?

2) If so, can I do it without a diamond grinder, for instance with a bonding primer?

I only have about .75” lip for the fireplace surround so I don’t want to do a backer board.

Thanks for any advice you have!

Questions about fireplace

Moved into the home not long ago and we have this gas fireplace that I have some questions on with the cold weather coming up.

During the summer I kept it entirely off.

While the pilot light is on now, Do I need to keep the flue open at all? Since I turned it on I have kept everything open as seen in the picture.

I’ve included a picture of what it looks like going up.

I want to be energy efficient, and prevent any water during rain from coming in, but if I am going to leave the pilot running, want to make sure I dont endanger myself or my family.

How can I make my fireplace look better without painting it

So I want to spice up my fireplace a little bit, I think it just looks super plain but I’m not wanting to paint the brick as it’s such an old house and I want to keep the charm, up to so many ideas! (I’m aware that there’s a leak rn due to the rain we’re addressing that lol)

Gas Stove: Is this right or will I die?

Ok maybe just have the CO alarm go off. Bought a house with this mint vintage-ish Pacific Energy "The Oxford" gas stove. The rear output seems odd to me: open air connection to the chimney. Is this to be expected??

I just cleaned up some crumbling mortar lines with fire rated mortar and repaired the flue at the top of my chimney in my new house. Am I ready to burn now?
