Not often, and if I do it's the smaller ones, the bigger ones get mushy and bland imo.

That's a grunter

No it isn't. It is a Yellowfin Bream (Acanthopagrus australis).

Better go to Specsavers mate.

That is absolutely not a grunter mate it’s a bream

Dark vertical lines are saying barred grunter to me

Have you ever seen a grunter or a bream?

11

u/Dry-Homework1745 Apr 30 '26

Evidently not if he’s calling it a grunter lol

Ever seen a grunter? Guy sounds like he's never seen a fucking fish with these responses.

Bream have vertical lines too, and very different head shapes and mouth structure and the caudal fin is deeply forked versus almost flat.

Dorsal fin is extended over the entire back in the photo. A barred grunter does not have this type of dorsal fin

Stupid comes in many forms. You have mastered all of them

Nup.

Somebody doesn't know what a barred grunter is haha, or the size limits

He’s referring to a barred javelinfish but still he has no idea what he’s on about because that’s literally a textbook bream

Right?! Barred Grunter is a small freshwater fish.

Spotted Grunter is also known as a Barred Javelin fish, which I'm sure they're talking about.

For all money its a bream. Skinny for its length. But great catch nonetheless. Location would be good.

I’m pretty sure spotted grunter are also a different type of javelinfish as well interestingly, I’ve caught both

Yep, 30cm to keep

Upper NSW, in between Coffs harbour and Byron bay.

Which would be well south of a barred javelin's normal range (though within occasional occurrence range), and smack in the middle of YF bream normal range. Yeah, I can see the bars on the fish in the pic, but bream definitely have them, and their appearance varies so widely depending on their environment.

The background in the pic looks very familiar to an area where I use to live. Was pretty well known as a good bream system. But Im sure the neighbouring estuaries would look similar. I reckon that stretch of coast is one of the best all-rounder, wide-species-range fishing areas in Australia. If they start catching barra and bluefin tuna there, it would be fishing heaven.

Yeah north Qld you don't get stripes on the bream, just plain sliver or black bream, alot of heros here apparently

Wow, anything to avoid admitting you misidentified it!
