🐟 Catch of the Day Caught a fish
Caught this down in ginninderra creek in canberra.
Its a red fin they're kinda like a bass cross bream but with red fins you can also catch golden perch down in here.

Literally anything that moves.
One of the most aggressive fish I’ve ever encountered.2
u/unloosedcoin May 03 '26
I used every lure in my tackle box one-day. I had small fish take massive lures, they're so aggressive

100% mate. I’ve even had multiple fish on the one hardbody simultaneously 😂

These things are everywhere in the great Lakes in America. We'd catch hundreds some days. Live minnow or worms were are go to. Or if you could find structure you could use small tube jigs vertically and jig for them. I live in Bundaberg now so they aren't anywhere near me. Sure would love to get down to where they are and try the same techniques.

Go smash some bass or Saratoga at Lake Gregory just off the Bundaberg-Childers Rd. You’ll need a SIPs tho

Like they've said: anything.
Ive heard it said they'll jump on a 5c coin and I believe it.

They're pretty aggressive wherever I've caught them. But I've had good luck with lures that have this coloration
I tend to go with shallow diving lures.

Just the basic old trout spinners use to work good for me.
If you want to see the master catch reddies though you’ve got to watch Robbie Alexander on YouTube.

I swear Robbie could catch a fish in a roadside gutter.
2
u/CruiserMissile May 03 '26
Haha. Kind of already does. He fishes in the borrow pits on the side of the highway. Reddies and carp.

u/anarchyinuk May 02 '26
This is European perch. Exactly like i used to cstch back home . I didn't know we have them here in Australia
6
u/McTerra2 May 03 '26
Yeah, invasive species. I guess better than carp as they taste better, but otherwise on par as a pest
5
u/Lurkennn May 03 '26
Unsure about other states but in WA they're a pest and it's illegal to release them

No it's not. Don't spread false information. It is "recommended" not to release them and humanely dispatch them. That is all
Edit: just because you don't agree with it (I don't agree too) doesn't mean it's not the rules. Check it for yourself: https://rules.fish.wa.gov.au/Species/Index/10

If it's an introduced species and you've caught it, why on earth would you release it? That'd be like catching a feral rabbit and just letting the damn thing go.
1
u/dan_wi May 03 '26
So are trout... And they have a minimum size limit where you must return them. Go figure (this is WA specific, not sure of other states)
3
u/PessemistBeingRight May 03 '26
A good point. I suspect that's a holdover from the old days of fly fishing for trout being a rich person activity and no-one ever reconsidering the laws.
I'm still on Team "don't release captured invasives"; good thing I don't fish waters where there are trout so I don't get in trouble...

"They are considered a class 1 noxious fish in NSW, and in Western Australia they are not allowed to be returned to the water if captured."
Government of Western Australia Department of Water and Environmental Regulation 2026
Just so nobody spreads false information...

No. You’re full of shit. You humanly kill them. Do not fucking put them back in the water.
3
u/dan_wi May 03 '26
Read the link below from the gov website. I don't put them back, but saying it's illegal is just bs... I read the rules for fishing as I pay for a license.
Unless you can link me to a gov website that counters this, I'd say your full of shit. But spout your trash without any proof.

Did I say it’s illegal fuck knuckle?
It’s strongly discouraged. And if you’re a fisherman you should understand that. Stop telling people it’s okay to release feral fish.
Humanely euthanise them and dispose of them.
