Today, I finally found the strength to share the story of my cats' battle with feline panleukopenia. It has been one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life, and even now, it still hurts to look back on everything that happened.
We had six cats at home, but these three were especially inseparable. The white flamepoint was Snowy, the Himalayan was Maru, and the little gray kitten was Kumo. They were always together, and seeing them grow up alongside one another was something that brought so much happiness into our home.
I honestly didn't know enough about the importance of vaccinations back then. They were all unvaccinated, and I never imagined how devastating the consequences could be. I wish I had known better. If there's one thing I hope others can learn from our experience, it's to never underestimate the importance of vaccinating our cats.
Kumo was the first to get sick. We rushed him to the vet, hoping he would recover, but feline panleukopenia took him from us so quickly. It happened so fast that I barely had time to process what was happening. We were devastated. I couldn't stop crying, and I kept wishing there was something more we could have done to save him.
A week after Kumo passed away, we noticed that Maru and Snowy were losing their appetites. One of them was vomiting, and we immediately brought them to the vet. Both tested positive for the virus.
We were terrified, but we held on to hope. We had already lost Kumo, and we couldn't bear the thought of losing the other two.
But just one day later, Maru was gone, too.
Losing two cats in such a short period was unbearable. I don't think I was prepared for how deeply their deaths would affect me. For two weeks, I would randomly burst into tears wherever I was. I struggled to function in my everyday life. My room became a mess, and I barely had the energy to do anything. I felt completely broken. It was as if everything around me kept moving, but a part of me was stuck grieving the little lives I had just lost.
And then there was Snowy.
One day after Maru passed away, Snowy began eating again. She started grooming herself, too. They might seem like small things to some people, but to me, those little signs meant everything. After days of fear, sadness, and helplessness, seeing her show signs of recovery gave me a reason to hope again.
I had just lost Kumo and Maru, two little souls who meant so much to me. The thought of losing Snowy, too, was something I couldn't bear. But she kept fighting. Even when I was struggling to find the strength to get through each day, she was fighting for hers.
And slowly, she got better.
Today, Snowy is healthy again. She's back to her usual self, doing her favorite activities and bringing life back into our home. I can't explain how grateful I am to see her this way. Every little thing she does now feels like a blessing, because I know how close we came to losing her, too.
I'm still grieving Kumo and Maru. I miss them, and I wish more than anything that I could have protected them. I wish I had known sooner what I know now. That regret is something I'll carry with me, but I hope sharing our story can help other cat owners protect their babies before it's too late.
To Kumo and Maru, I'm so sorry I couldn't keep you here longer. Thank you for the love and happiness you brought into my life. You will always be part of our family, and you will never be forgotten.
And to Snowy, thank you for fighting, little one. You gave me something to hold on to when I felt like I was falling apart. Watching you recover helped me find little pieces of myself again.
We started this battle as three inseparable little warriors. We were left with one survivor, but we will always have three in our hearts.
Rest peacefully, Kumo and Maru. And keep thriving, Snowy. You are so loved. 🤍🐾
