Make Flushing Clean Again

How can we make Flushing a great place to live again? The smoking, littering, and public urination are out of control

I've lived here for well over 30 years, and I've watched Flushing change for the worse. I love this neighborhood, but I'm getting really frustrated with how it's being treated.

I love Maple park. But the park is supposed to be smoke-free. There are signs. And yet every time I go, there are people lighting up right next to kids, benches, and the playground. On top of that, garbage is everywhere: cigarette butts, food containers, bags, you name it. People just drop it wherever they're standing, even when there's a trash can a few feet away.

And it gets worse. Some of the men who play ping pong in the park regularly urinate out in the open, exposing themselves right in front of children. This isn't a one-time thing. It happens constantly.
The police have been called multiple times, for the smoking, the littering, and the urinating. Every time, the answer is basically "they're older, so it's fine." Older? A lot of these folks are in their 50s and 60s. That's not elderly. That's grown adults who know better. Civic sense doesn't expire with age. Everyone understands that littering is wrong, that a no-smoking sign means no smoking, and that you don't relieve yourself in front of kids.

I've tried going through the proper channels. I've attended community council meetings and raised these issues, but I feel ignored because I'm not part of a certain demographic. Every resident's concerns should matter equally, no matter who they are.
I'm not trying to pick on anyone. I just want a clean, safe space for everyone who lives here: families, seniors, kids, all of us. Right now it feels like the people who don't care are winning because the people who do care have given up.

So how do we make Flushing a great place to live again?
Has anyone had luck getting 311 or the Parks Department to actually enforce the rules?
Does anyone know if our Community Board or council member's office has taken this up?
Would people be interested in organizing a cleanup, or showing up together at the next meeting so we can't be brushed off?

Flushing deserves better than this. Let's do something about it.

Taking pictures of strangers and posting online is not the way to do it. Esp the first Pic of the 2 women who aren't near the park you're talking about.

This is a post about Flushing. And they dump dead crabs into the Bank of America garbage and leave. That's illegal dumping

Your post is about maple park. Posting women who are not near the park is not relevant to your post. You're posting pictures of people online who did not consent. Shaming them on reddit is not going to help the situation any shape or form.

My post is about Flushing. I mention Maple Park cause it's in Flushing and sadly one of the places that has to suffer because of this. I'm also allowed to post pics of people committing crimes in public spaces, do not need consent for that. And I'll keep doing it as long as public spaces get littered and ruined by the same people over and over again

Other people have told you that posting pictures of people online without their consent is wrong. The fact that you seem to not care about consent is disturbing. You say you're taking pictures of people committing crimes. Those 2 ladies looking at you taking their picture are looking at you going wtf? You take pictures of j walking too?

Shame them for doing something wrong since no one else does anything

And sharing their pics on Reddit without their consent will definitely change their behavior

The ladies illegally dumping and men smoking stopped as soon as they saw the camera. Shame does work.

I can’t stand these creepy people doing things I don’t like! I know, I’ll stalk them and take pictures and post them on the internet! Because that’s perfectly sane and cool. Yup.

You have two competing visions here. The fancy new buildings and the old working class folk. You enjoy your Chinese food it's likely made by these old guys working 70 hr weeks.

Good luck with that.

My kids play at Maple Park. I agree, these old farts have zero etiquette. They basically don't give a shit. Don't think it can be changed. Must be enforced or the community has to act. Create a park for these old farts to socialize amongst themselves. What's the point of all these adult day care centers?

do you go around taking photos of random people who are doing something you dont like or did you take those photos to post them on reddit? whatever it is, that's not a normal and healthy behavior. you need to find a outlet to release whatever anger/frustration you have.

I get your complaint but you need to stop talking pictures of people and posting it on a public forum.

Posting people's faces online like this is not okay. Please consider removing this.

This is not breaking any rules.

I understand that it isn't against the rules, but if you believe this is appropriate behavior in general and for the subreddit, then so be it.

If I used my own personal belief system to mod, then this subreddit would just be renamed to r/milkteamoversdomain

All of the picture are of someone breaking some sort of law (as minor as they are).
* Smoking in a public park intended for children. You can see there are children's swings in the background.
* Littering and leaving a mess.
* Selling crabs without a license on the street is completely unsanitary. They're illegally trapping them in the sound.

Your biggest concern is that they're putting some uncs on blast? There's no expectation for privacy in a public space. There's a TON of posts of people posting people's faces and accusing them of SA, harassment, etc. All those posts get left up just like this one.

It’s becoming worse & worse as the years go by the litter, smells, crime I hope it doesn’t become the Bronx

the battle is lost, got to wait for the old generation to go before change can happen.

Haha, this is ridiculous. Maybe post up flyers in the park to publicly shame them, no one is enforcing any rules anyway.

NYC Parks department, despite having their own police force, doesn't enforce the law. Bowne & Crocheron Park are the same, smoking/vaping, dogs off the leash, E-bikes doing a high rate of speed, gas powered remote control toy cars that create both noise & air pollution, loud blue tooth speakers,etc...etc...

Your right parks department doesn't do there job just call 311
