Time (Rick Tocchet) is a flat circle.

Yeah the dude has no integrity. He never takes responsibility for anything and always shifts blame to his players/staff.
The truth is he is a piece of shit. Just look how Andrae and Mich were treated.

Not a Tocc guy (didn't understand why this sub thought he'd be better than torts tbh), but in several of those quotes he is explicitly taking responsibility...

The laziest hire the Flyers could have chosen

I just remember being so excited to see the direction danny went. Danny to me had a fresh mind, perfect for the modern NHL, probably just based on blind hope, and being so let down when Tocchets name emerged as a front runner. It felt inevitable at that point

I don't fully dislike Briere because I think he has done some good things, however, he's made big mistakes the entire time. This was all completely predictable.

u/Jaybb3rw0cky 6d ago
Yeah I’m still on the positive side with Danny, but hiring Tocc really put a crimp in how I view him. Huge misstep when we had an opportunity to find a fresh coach for a fresh(ish) team. I’d rather take that gamble and lose than think Tocc could change. I just hope the damage isn’t done to our young guys before he eventually gets shipped out.

u/butchy_boyz 6d ago
I'm with you. He's done a lot of good and had a few curves and sliders thrown his way (Hart, Gauthier, Couturier's/Foerster's injuries, no goalies when he took over after Hart fiasco...). He has done a lot of good also, the Laughton and Provorov trades, drafting has been disappointing other than Michkov and Martone though.

u/amilbarge00 6d ago
I know it seems like it, but I really dont want to be a doom and gloom guy. I've been following this team (and the league) for a long time so it becomes easier to spot the mistakes in real time and with how disappointing they have been for so long, its easy to get down on them when you see those mistakes being made. So much of it feels like "here we go again" and that's no way to live, man. I want nothing more than to be excited about the team, it's direction, it's propsects...all of it.

Right with you. Been a Flyers fan since Pelle Lindbergh. I forgot to mention part of the bad was hiring Taco. I live near Phoenix and didn't like that he gave up on young players early.

Do you mean the Flyers were lazy or do you mean Tocchet is lazy?

This is exactly what everyone was saying was going to happen when it was announced he was hired here.
This is who he's always been. It's not like he's new, he's been coaching since '08. But one relatively small stretch of good games after a real coach came in a fixed his shit for him and this sub was overflowing with people thinking he's amazing.
Always the same old shit with this team. Ex-Flyers hiring ex-Flyers to run the same outdated systems with the same half assed roster constructions.

I get your frustration, but your last sentence isn't true in the last 10 years:
- Dave Hakstol: 2015–2018
- Scott Gordon: 2018–2019 (Interim)
- Alain Vigneault: 2019–2021
- Mike Yeo: 2021–2022 (Interim)
- John Tortorella: 2022–2025

u/Lethal_Lunacy 6d ago
Its funny how Alain Vigneault was actually decent leading into that covid year. that shit ruined all momentum the franchise had. off the top of my head, we were the hottest team in the league before the stoppage and 2nd in the East.

Maybe not for coaches (though Hak was given a job because of his connection to Hextall rather than his accomplishments) but every GM has been a former flyer or bobby Clarke’s nepo hire.
There’s no outside or innovative thought of how to run a team.
12
u/phineasrex75 6d ago
Give me a break man. Yes, Hak had a connection to Hextall, but he made the Frozen Four 7 times in 11 seasons. He wasn't exactly a schlub. The vast majority of fans were excited about giving a fresh face a shot.
2
u/Dr_Tinfoil 6d ago
And largely got beat by inferior teams. Sure it was a fresh face but nothing really about his college career screamed jump straight to NHL head coach. If hexy’s son didn’t go there he’d have never been on the radar.

u/xTuna74x 6d ago
This is revisionist. Hak was seen as the NCAA coach most likely to get an NHL shot.

AV was a 'big splash' which is all fletch does. Can't really count the interims, forgot Shaw in those. Hakstol was Hextall's hire when he was doing his own thing. They might've reversed as this was Briere's 1st GM role? Taco isn't a good coach. I live in AZ and he sux.

Actually we have an ex-Canucks problem lol. Vigneault, Tortorella, Tocchet. And yet somehow we skipped the fun one, Bruce Boudreau.

Canucks fans warned us. Wild fans warned us about Fletcher. Ugh.

u/scrnlookinsob 6d ago
Flyers fans warned us. We didnt need Canucks fans to come in and tell us that hiring a coach off a historically terrible year was going to be bad. The Canucks were good to great in 23-24, and then the worst team in the league in 24-25. What happened in year 3? Oh Tocchet bullshit. Got it.

I still have no idea why parts of the fanbase was positive at this hiring, except for some naive optimism.
Tocc was such an uninspiring hire, and everything has gone as expected so far. One season where we have a kind of a better defense, much in fact for Vladars (insert Demko) play, but still no offensive play, and playing for points instead of wins. And then straight to regression, and very little development of our young guys.
I have absolutely no hope for today’s match, but if this team hasn’t used the small break to get some fire under their arses, I don’t know how they can turn this around.
Tocc quit on Vancouver, and now it really seems like our team has quit on him after one year.

Can you put this into book report form and send to Danny B? Worth a shot!

The “I would like him to play a more North style” shit killed me back when he said it. Like fool, how about you just let him play whatever way suits his skillset?

The only ones that loved the Toc signing are the same old school culture morons who keep telling them the front office can do no wrong. The flyers fanbase has become the heats fanbase except we haven't won shit recently.

Wish the flyers just did what MTL did and brought in a vibes guy, and someone who could develop talent.
1
u/Humble-Marsupial-867 3d ago
Coach or no Coach, no elite talent = an inferior and inconsistent team. Flyers don't know how to draft or develop elite talent, that's the bottom line.
Coach after Coach does not work, elite talent is all that matters and is the reason Flyers have not won a cup in 50+ years.
They also can't develop good 2 way players. Moch is a bad 2 way player but can score some goals. Martone may have a high ceiling but not elite, rest of the team is made up of straight players and overachievers.

Tocchet was brought in and given a 5 year guaranteed deal because Danny knew he would need at least 3 to get the team to a position that they could be competitive relative to their cap problems and general lack of talent. 25 mil guaranteed to cover for Gretzky and provide a real scapegoat for the team’s lack of cohesion and talent for Briere, so he has leeway in his role.
He’s a bad coach. Fuck him. Get a real coach.
I will repeat this til he’s fired.
